And it contains one seif (סעיף אחד): as long as the tefillin are on his head or on his arm, it is forbidden to sleep in them, even a brief sleep (שינת עראי) ; unless he has placed a סודר over them and no woman is with him — then he may sleep a brief sleep. How does he do it? he places his head between his knees and sleeps sitting (מניח ראשו בין ברכיו והוא יושב וישן). If the tefillin are wrapped in his hand (כרוכין בידו), he may sleep even a deep sleep (שינת קבע) ; but if he holds them in his hand unwrapped, it is forbidden to sleep even a brief sleep. Rama: this applies when he holds them without their נרתק (case), but in their נרתק, it is permitted in every way (בכל ענין שרי).
