Daat HaRav — The Alter Rebbe's Shitah on Siman

The Alter Rebbe's way on the laws of tzitzit and its enwrapping: what the עיטוף is and its measure (כדי הילוך ד׳ אמות), the two berakhot (« להתעטף בציצית » / « על מצות ציצית »), the kavana « למען תזכרו את כל מצותי », the rules of הפסק between garments, and the בדיקת הציצית each day — in the sensibility of Chabad.

Why a Level 4 dedicated to the Alter Rebbe? The Shulchan Arukh of the Alter Rebbe is not a commentary on the Mechaber (מחבר) — it is an independent and complete Shulchan Arukh, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity: it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + the inner dimension in a single work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigour.

For Chabad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his ruling is the deciding authority. The Rebbe explicitly instructed to study the Shulchan Arukh of the Alter Rebbe This page gathers the Rav's way on Siman ח׳ — the הלכות ציצית ועטיפתו (the laws of tzitzit and its enwrapping) — where the Mechaber treats this siman in 17 seifim (י״ז סעיפים), while the Alter Rebbe unfolds it in 30 seifim (ל׳ סעיפים): he develops what the עיטוף and its measure are (כדי הילוך ד׳ אמות), the two berakhot (« להתעטף בציצית » / « על מצות ציצית »), the kavana « למען תזכרו », the rules of הפסק between garments, and the בדיקת הציצית before the berakha.

The full text of the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Arukh

The text of the Alter Rebbe himself (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.8), followed by our English translation. The Mechaber treats this siman in 17 seifim (י״ז סעיפים); the Alter Rebbe in 30 (ל׳ סעיפים).

The opening of the siman. Whoever recites the « קְרִיאַת שְׁמַע » without tzitzit testifies false testimony against himself. And since every person must be careful and prompt to bring forward the mitzva in every way possible, immediately after נטילת ידים — when his hands are clean and he can bless — he shall enwrap himself (יִתְעַטֵּף) in the tzitzit. The Rav's chidush: he opens the laws of tzitzit with the reason (טעם) of the mitzva (the « false testimony » of Menachot) and the principle of זריזות — to advance the mitzva already at the morning נטילה.

When he begins to enwrap himself, before he is fully enwrapped, he blesses standing (מְעֻמָּד) « לְהִתְעַטֵּף בַּצִּיצִית » (see siman כ״ה, where you will find the reason). The ב of « בַּצִּיצִית » should be vocalised with a פתח. The Rav's chidush: the berakha is said standing and עובר לעשייתן (before completing the עיטוף); he even specifies the exact vocalisation of the ב — בַּצִּיצִית (with פתח), referring to siman כ״ה.

All the blessings of the mitzvot must be said standing, except the בִּרְכַת הַשְּׁחִיטָה and the הַפְרָשַׁת חַלָּה, which are not « so much » mitzvot — since one does them only to make the food usable. As for the performance of the mitzvot themselves, some need not be done standing, and some must, as will be explained each in its place בס״ד. The Rav's chidush: he establishes here the general rule of standing (מעומד) for ברכות המצוות and distinguishes it from the performance of the mitzva (the act itself), which divides according to the case.

The enwrapping (הָעֲטִיפָה) in the tzitzit — our Sages said it must be done standing precisely, and they found a support (סמך ורמז) in the Torah: it is said here regarding tzitzit « וְהָיָה לָכֶם », and it is said regarding the עֹמֶר « וּסְפַרְתֶּם לָכֶם » — just as the « לָכֶם » said of the עֹמֶר must be done standing (as will be explained in siman תפ״ט), here too standing. The Rav's chidush: he grounds the requirement of standing for the עיטוף on a גזירה שווה « לָכֶם–לָכֶם » with the עֹמֶר — not only the berakha, but the עיטוף itself is done standing.

There are those who say (יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים): since our Sages instituted blessing « לְהִתְעַטֵּף בַּצִּיצִית », it follows that the mitzva is to enwrap oneself specifically (להתעטף דווקא). And any enwrapping that is not like the enwrapping of the Ishmaelites (כַּעֲטִיפַת הַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִים) is not called עֲטִיפָה but לְבִישָׁה (ordinary wearing). One must therefore enwrap oneself in one's talit like the Ishmaelites — that is, to cover the head with the face down to the hollows of the cheeks, below the mouth. And according to them, our small talitot, which have no head-enwrapping, would be entirely exempt from tzitzit. The Rav's chidush: he presents the first opinion — the עיטוף is essential (מעכב), in the manner of the עטיפת ישמעאלים, otherwise it is only לבישה.

But there are those who say that every garment of four corners, even without עיטוף, is obligated in tzitzit, for it is said in the Torah « עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם » — and every garment and cloth is included, while the עיטוף has not even a רמז in the Torah. And as for the Sages instituting the blessing « לְהִתְעַטֵּף », this is because their custom was to enwrap their head in their talit… so too we, although we bless « לְהִתְעַטֵּף », need nothing more. And the halakha is according to the second opinion Nevertheless, to fulfil the mitzva of tzitzit מִן הַמֻּבְחָר, it is proper to enwrap oneself like the Ishmaelites at the time of the berakha, and to remain so for the time it takes to walk four amot (כְּדֵי הִלּוּךְ אַרְבַּע אַמּוֹת) — and thereby one discharges even the first opinion, whose essential concern is at the time of wearing. The Rav's chidush: he rules (halakha כסברא השנייה) that the mitzva is the לבישה, but retains the עיטוף כעטיפת ישמעאלים + the ד׳ אמות as מן המובחר to satisfy both opinions.

And so shall one do with our small talitot: although we hold that one discharges the obligation of tzitzit with them even without עיטוף, nevertheless, to discharge according to all opinions (לָצֵאת לְדִבְרֵי הַכֹּל), if he wishes to bless « לְהִתְעַטֵּף בַּצִּיצִית », it is good that he place the talit katan over his head, the width of the talit along his height — for that is the manner of עיטוף — and remain so enwrapped at least the time it takes to walk four amot, then draw it off his head and put it on. And this specifically for a garment made of a single square piece with the neck-opening in the middle… But if the garment is sewn… he shall put it on in the ordinary way, without enwrapping his head with it at all, and shall not bless « לְהִתְעַטֵּף », but shall bless « אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ עַל מִצְוַת צִיצִית ». The Rav's chidush: he distinguishes concretely the single-piece talit katan (where one may do עיטוף and bless « להתעטף ») from the sewn one (where one blesses « על מצות ציצית »), to unite the two opinions in practice.

Those who cover with their talit only the head and around the neck, and do not take care to cover the body — they must be prevented (לִמְחוֹת בְּיָדָם), for the essential עיטוף is on the body, according to all (לְכֻלֵּי עָלְמָא). They differed in seif ה only on whether one must also cover the head with one's talit, but covering the head alone without covering the body is, according to all, not called כְּסוּת at all (see siman י׳). The Rav's chidush: he uncovers the hidden point of agreement behind the machloket — the עיטוף of the body is required לכולי עלמא; the dispute concerns only the status of covering the head.

It is the custom to make an עֲטָרָה (crown) for the talit, of a piece of silk, as a marker that the tzitziyot in front remain always in front and that one does not lower them — for « מַעֲלִין בַּקֹּדֶשׁ וְאֵין מוֹרִידִין » (one raises in holiness and does not lower). And the Arizal (הָאֲרִ"י ז״ל) was not particular about this. It is good to be careful that at the time of the עיטוף one throws all four tzitziyot to the left side, like the enwrapping of the Ishmaelites, for the time it takes to walk four amot. The Rav's chidush: he mentions the custom of the עֲטָרָה and the conduct of the Arizal, and links the throwing of the tzitziyot to the left to the ד׳ אמות of the עיטוף.

He shall bring back two tzitziyot in front of him and two tzitziyot behind him, so as to be surrounded by mitzvot (מְסֻבָּב בְּמִצְוֹת). Some have the custom to place the right side over the left shoulder, so as to be surrounded by mitzvot. The Rav's chidush: the explicit aim — to be מְסֻבָּב בְּמִצְוֹת, surrounded on all sides by the mitzva; he adds the custom of placing the right side over the left shoulder.

If several men enwrap themselves each in his own talit at the same time — each one blesses for himself. And if they wish, one blesses and the others listen and answer amen and discharge their obligation thereby, for שׁוֹמֵעַ כִּמְדַבֵּר (he who listens is as he who recites). But another person who is not now enwrapping himself in tzitzit cannot bless in order to discharge the one enwrapping himself… However, if the one enwrapping himself is a בּוּר (an ignoramus) who does not know how to bless, another may bless for him, for כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל עֲרֵבִים זֶה בָּזֶה (all Israel are responsible for one another)… And such is the law for all the ברכות המצוות. The Rav's chidush: he grounds the שומע כמדבר and the ערבות, and derives from them the custom that the שליח ציבור blesses aloud to discharge one who does not know.

The Torah called them « צִיצִית », and the word « צִיצִית » denotes only separated threads, like separated hairs, as it is written « וַיִּקָּחֵנִי בְּצִיצִת רֹאשִׁי » (He took me by a lock of my head — Yehezkel ח׳:ג). Therefore one must separate the threads from one another before the berakha. And if he has tarried in coming to the synagogue, and separating the tzitziyot would make him miss praying with the tzibour — he need not separate them. The Rav's chidush: he grounds the separating of the threads on the very meaning of the word « ציצית » (חוטין נפרדין), and sets it as a precondition to the berakha — unless it would cause one to lose the תפלה בציבור.

Each and every day, before he blesses, he must inspect the threads of the tzitzit to see whether they are valid (כְּשֵׁרִים), lest some threads have torn; likewise he must inspect that part of the tzitzit resting on the corner of the garment, lest a thread has torn. And although he checked the tzitziyot yesterday, he must check them again the next day, and we do not say « leave them on their חזקה » — because if he does not check them at the time of the berakha, he will never check them… since they tend to tear through the treading of feet… therefore the Sages instituted that he check each and every day. But on that same day, once he has already checked them once, he need check no more… and it is permitted to go out with them so, without a check, even into the public domain on Shabbat. The Rav's chidush: he grounds the daily בדיקה (and its reason: « if he does not check them at the time of the berakha, he will never check them »), while exempting it for the rest of the same day once the בדיקה is done.

One who has put on several tzitzit garments one over the other — although they were all discharged with a single berakha — must nevertheless check the tzitzit of each one separately, lest a thread has torn in the tzitzit of one of them, and he be found wearing a four-cornered garment without tzitzit. The Rav's chidush: even when a single berakha covers several talitot, the בדיקה is still required for each, lest one wear a בגד of four corners without tzitzit.

One who has tarried in coming to the synagogue, and would miss praying with the tzibour while busy checking the tzitzit; and likewise one who came to the synagogue and was called up to the Sefer Torah while he had not yet put on his talit — since the tzibour is waiting for him, therefore because of the burden on the public (טֹרַח הַצִּבּוּר), he is permitted to put on the talit without checking the tzitzit; for since he knows that yesterday the tzitziyot were whole, we maintain them on their חזקה. The Rav's chidush: he sets the exception of טורח הציבור — when waiting would burden the public, one relies on yesterday's חזקה and puts it on without a בדיקה.

If he checked his talit and laid it in a known place, and the next day found it as he had laid it — he need not check, for certainly the tzitziyot were not invalidated in the meantime. The Rav's chidush: he limits the daily בדיקה of seif יג — when the talit was left untouched in a safe place, the חזקה of validity holds and a new בדיקה is not required.

When he enwraps himself in the tzitzit, he shall have the following kavana: that the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded us to enwrap ourselves in the tzitzit so that we remember all His mitzvot to do them, as it is said « וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם אֶת כָּל מִצְוֹת ה' » (you shall see it and remember all the mitzvot of Hashem — Bamidbar ט״ו:לט). The Rav's chidush: he makes the kavana « למען תזכרו » a component of the mitzva at the time of the עיטוף — to see the tzitzit in order to remember all the mitzvot and do them.

And since the reason for wearing the tzitzit is to remember the mitzvot, therefore one who wears a talit katan should be careful to wear it over his garments, so as always to see it and remember the mitzvot. And those who wear it under their garments — let them be careful to wear it in such a way that the tzitziyot are always visible, for through seeing them they will always remember the mitzvot. The Rav's chidush: he draws the practical consequence from the reason « למען תזכרו » — to wear the talit katan over the garments (or at least to leave the tzitziyot visible), so that seeing produces remembrance.

The tzitziyot must be on the outside, as it is said « וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ » (you shall see it) — and not like those who tuck them into the corners (of the garment). And in pressing circumstances (בִּשְׁעַת הַדְּחָק), for instance if he walks among non-Jews and fears they might mock him, he may tuck them into the corners, but at the time of the berakha they shall be uncovered (מְגֻלִּין) at least the time it takes to walk four amot. The Rav's chidush: he grounds the uncovering (גילוי) of the tzitziyot on « וראיתם אותו », concedes the דחק of the non-Jews, but maintains that בשעת הברכה they must be uncovered כְּדֵי הילוך ד׳ אַמּוֹת.

If he wishes to put on the talit katan immediately upon rising, so as not to walk four amot without tzitzit, but his hands are not yet clean and he cannot bless — he may put it on without a berakha; and when he cleans his hands, he shall touch his tzitziyot (יְמַשְׁמֵשׁ) and bless, for the touching (הַמִּשְׁמוּשׁ) is as if he were putting it on now. And if he intends to enwrap himself in another talit immediately when he has cleaned his hands, he need not touch this one or bless on it; he shall bless only on the talit he puts on afterward, and have the kavana to discharge also this one he has already put on. The Rav's chidush: he introduces the principle of מִשְׁמוּשׁ — touching the tzitziyot stands in for a fresh putting-on, to attach the berakha to the talit already worn.

If he has several four-cornered garments, all are obligated in tzitzit, even if he puts them all on at once, for it is said « עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם » — several garments are implied. And if he puts them all on one after another without an interruption of speech (הֶפְסֵק שִׂיחָה) in between, and had the intention from the start, at the time of the berakha, to put them all on at once — he blesses only once for all of them, even if he removed the first before putting on the second. But if he interrupted between them with speech or other matters — he must bless on each one. And this specifically if he interrupted not for the sake of the wearing; but for the sake of the wearing, e.g. saying « give me the garment » — he need not bless. Likewise if he did not have the intention from the start… it is as if he had interrupted, and he must bless… The Rav's chidush: he systematises the rule of the single berakha — determined by the דעת מתחילה and the absence of הפסק שיחה — and distinguishes the הפסק לצורך לבישה (which does not require re-blessing) from the הפסק שלא לצורך.

If he wears a talit katan in his house, even though he blessed « לְהִתְעַטֵּף » on it — nevertheless, if he then goes to the synagogue and enwraps himself in a talit gadol, he must re-bless « לְהִתְעַטֵּף », and is not discharged by the first berakha, for the walk from his house to the synagogue is considered a הֶפְסֵק, even if he interrupted with no speech in between, and even if his house was near the synagogue… But if he did not go out of the threshold of his house in the meantime, even if he blessed on a talit katan in one room and goes to enwrap himself in a talit gadol in another room of the same house — he need not re-bless… The Rav's chidush: he fixes that the walk from the house to the synagogue constitutes a הפסק requiring a new berakha (even without speech, even nearby), but that moving between two rooms of the same בית, without leaving the פתח, is not a הפסק.

One who removes his talit and, at the moment of removing it, intends to return and put it on at once — need not bless on it when he returns and puts it on at once, even if no talit katan remained on him, even if he removes it in one house and returns and puts it on in another — it is not a הֶפְסֵק, since he returns to put on that same talit on which he has already blessed, and he did not turn his mind away at all from wearing it… But if, when he removed it, his intention was not to return and put it on until after several hours… he must re-bless on it, even if a talit katan remained on him… The Rav's chidush: he makes the intention to return and put it on at once (and the absence of היסח הדעת) the decisive criterion — not the place — for whether one must re-bless after removing the talit.

Likewise, even if when he removed it his intention was to return and put it on at once, but afterward he forgot or reconsidered (שָׁכַח אוֹ נִמְלַךְ) and put it on only after several hours — then he must re-bless on it, even if he did not go out of the threshold of his house at all in the meantime and returns to put it on in the very room where he removed it. The Rav's chidush: he completes seif כג — it is not the initial intention alone that counts, but the actuality of the immediate return; a delay of several hours (through forgetting or reconsidering) requires re-blessing, regardless of place.

One who removes his talit סְתָם (without any particular intention) — neither to return and put it on at once, nor not to: if when he removed the talit a talit katan still remained on him, then he did not turn his mind away from the mitzva, and so when he returns and puts on the talit he removed, he need not bless. But if when he removed the talit no garment with tzitzit remained on him, then he turned his mind away entirely from the mitzva, and so when he returns and puts on the removed talit, he must re-bless. The Rav's chidush: in the indeterminate case (סְתָם), the criterion becomes the remaining talit katan — its presence prevents the היסח הדעת and exempts from re-blessing; its absence is a complete היסח הדעת requiring a berakha.

One who was wearing a talit and it fell from him — when he returns and enwraps himself in it, he must re-bless, since it fell without his intention, and therefore his intention to put it on again avails nothing. To what does this apply? When it fell entirely from his body; but if a part of it remained on his body, even though most of it fell — he need not re-bless, since a little of the mitzva remained on him. And this specifically if that part which did not fall remained resting on his body; but if it remained resting on his hand… then nothing of the mitzva remained on him, and so… he must re-bless. The Rav's chidush: he rules that a fall without intent cancels the cover of the intention to return, and specifies the criterion of the remaining part being on the body (and not on the hand, for עיקר העיטוף הוא בגוף).

Any four-cornered garment designated to be worn by day, if he did not remove it at night but it remained on him until the morning — he need not bless on it in the morning, since there is an opinion (יש אומרים) that a daytime garment is obligated in tzitzit even if one wishes to wear it at night; so there was no time of exemption for this garment (the night is no הֶפְסֵק). Nevertheless, since there is an opinion (see siman י״ח) that a daytime garment is exempt from tzitzit if one wishes to wear it at night… it would be a הֶפְסֵק… therefore, to discharge according to all opinions, it is good that he bless on another talit and discharge also the one in which he spent the night. The Rav's chidush: he resolves the machloket over a daytime garment worn at night by recommending blessing on another talit

It is forbidden to cover oneself with a garment obligated in tzitzit without having put tzitzit on it, and if he wears it, he transgresses a positive commandment (מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה), for he has annulled (בִּטֵּל) the mitzva of tzitzit. The Rav's chidush: he frames the prohibition positively — wearing an obligated garment without tzitzit is a nullification of a positive commandment, underscoring the weight of the mitzva (parallel to seif יז of the Mechaber).

One who was praying the תְּפִלַּת שְׁמוֹנֶה עֶשְׂרֵה and whose talit fell from him, and others placed the talit back upon him — when he finishes his prayer, he shall touch (יְמַשְׁמֵשׁ) the tzitziyot and bless. The Rav's chidush: he applies the principle of מִשְׁמוּשׁ (seif כ) to the case of the talit falling during the עמידה — one does not interrupt to bless; at the end of the תפלה, the touching stands in for a fresh putting-on and carries the berakha.

One who sleeps by day — it is good that he not remove the talit katan from himself entirely, but cover himself with it during sleep; and when he puts it on afterward, he need no berakha, since he did not remove it from himself entirely. The Rav's chidush: he closes the siman with the case of daytime sleep — keeping the talit katan on oneself during sleep avoids the היסח הדעת and exempts from re-blessing on waking; recommended conduct (טוב).

The yesod: the עיטוף, the two berakhot and the kavana of remembrance

The Alter Rebbe's reading of this siman holds in three movements. First, he decides the debate עיטוף / לבישה: the halakha is that the mitzva is the לבישה (כסברא השנייה), but מן המובחר one enwraps oneself כעטיפת הישמעאלים for the time of the ד׳ אמות. Then, he fixes the two berakhot according to the form of the talit (« להתעטף בציצית » / « על מצות ציצית »). Finally, he grounds the whole mitzva on the kavana « למען תזכרו » — to see the tzitzit in order to remember all the mitzvot.

The עיטוף, the לבישה and the measure of four amot

The principle (seifim ה-ז). For the first opinion, the mitzva is the עטיפה כעטיפת הישמעאלים (covering the head and face); for the second — which is the halakha — every four-cornered בגד is obligated even without עיטוף. The Rav rules כסברא השנייה, but holds that מן המובחר one enwraps oneself at the time of the berakha and remains so כְּדֵי הִלּוּךְ אַרְבַּע אַמּוֹת.

The Rav's distinction. The essential עיטוף is on the body, according to all (seif ח); the machloket concerns only covering the head. The single-piece talit katan allows עיטוף and the berakha « להתעטף »; the sewn talit is worn ordinarily and one blesses « על מצות ציצית ».

The halakhic consequence. For the talit gadol: עיטוף כעטיפת הישמעאלים at the time of the berakha, the ד׳ אמות, then one arranges it on the shoulders. For the talit katan: according to its form, one of the two berakhot (see the next yesod).

The two berakhot — « להתעטף » and « על מצות ציצית »

The principle (seifim ב, ז). The berakha on the talit gadol is « לְהִתְעַטֵּף בַּצִּיצִית », said standing and עובר לעשייתן (before completing the עיטוף). The Rav even specifies the vocalisation: בַּצִּיצִית, the ב with a פתח.

The Rav's distinction. On the single-piece talit katan, where עיטוף is possible: « לְהִתְעַטֵּף ». On the sewn talit katan, worn in the ordinary way: « אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ… The form of the garment determines the נוסח.

The practical consequence. The נוסח depends on the real possibility of the עיטוף — לצאת לדברי הכל; for the detail of each case, see the Rav and the minhag.

The kavana « למען תזכרו » — to see and to remember

The principle (seifim יז-יט). In enwrapping oneself, one has the kavana that Hashem commanded us to enwrap ourselves Hence: wearing the talit katan over the garments and keeping the tzitziyot מבחוץ (visible).

The inner dimension (Chabad — at the level of principle). The tzitzit as a permanent reminder of the mitzvot meets, in principle, Chabad's teaching on the role of the מקיף (the « encompassing ») and of the seeing (רְאִיָּה) that awakens remembrance and the awareness of the mitzvot throughout the day.

The halakhic consequence. Keeping the tzitziyot visible (seif יט), wearing the talit katan over the garments (seif יח) — so that seeing produces remembrance « ובלכתך בדרך ».

A note for further study. The full development of the dimension of the seeing of the tzitzit and the מקיף — beyond the halakhic principle set out here (the kavana « למען תזכרו ») — is the proper subject of Chabad thought (Tanya, Likutei Torah, and the sichot on parashat Tzitzit). This page presents it at the level of the attested principle, without citing any chapter or precise formulation. For in-depth study of this dimension, study with a Chabad Rav and in the texts themselves.

The force of the Alter Rebbe's psak

A comparison of the Alter Rebbe's way with those of the Mechaber, the Rama (רמ״א) and the Mishna Berura (משנה ברורה) on the key points of siman ח׳. The Shulchan Arukh of the Alter Rebbe (שולחן ערוך הרב) row is highlighted — it sets out the Rav's own sensibility, as it emerges from his text (§1, 30 seifim). The Rav unfolds in 30 seifim what the Mechaber lays out in 17.

Topic Mechaber Rama Mishna Berura The Alter Rebbe's way
— (on 8:3, the custom of the small talitot). MB 8:2-4 — the עטיפת ישמעאלים; the ד׳ אמות; the measure of the עיטוף (Menachot 41a). The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he rules וַהֲלָכָה כַּסְּבָרָא הַשְּׁנִיָּה (the mitzva is the לבישה), but retains עיטוף כעטיפת הישמעאלים + כְּדֵי הילוך ד׳ אַמּוֹת as מן המובחר; the essential עיטוף is בגוף לכולי עלמא.
Hagaha on 8:6 — « וי״א שמברכין עליו על מצות ציצית וכן נוהגין ואין לשנות » (Kol Bo). MB 8:13-16 — when « להתעטף » and when « על מצות ציצית »; עובר לעשייתן. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he ties the נוסח to the form of the talit katan — single-piece (עיטוף) → « להתעטף »; sewn → « על מצות ציצית »; and specifies the vocalisation בַּצִּיצִית (פתח).
MB 8:26 — the kavana; « וראיתם אותו »; the tzitziyot מבחוץ. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he develops the consequence — לבשו על בגדיו, הציצית מבחוץ, מגולין כְּדֵי הילוך ד׳ אַמּוֹת בשעת ברכה; remembrance is born of the seeing.
». Hagaha on 8:12, 8:14 — « אם פשט הראשון קודם שלבש השני צריך לחזור ולברך »; « וי״א דוקא כשנשאר עליו טלית קטן » (Agour). The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he systematises by the דעת מתחילה, the היסח הדעת and the remaining talit katan; הליכה מהבית לבית הכנסת = הפסק; פשיטה ע״מ לחזור מיד ≠ הפסק.
MB 8:22-25 — the daily בדיקה; טורח הציבור; the חזקה of a talit left in place. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he grounds the daily בדיקה (« אם לא יבדקם בשעת הברכה לא יבדקם לעולם »), exempts it for the rest of the day, permits it בשעת טורח הציבור, and dispenses with it when the talit was left in a safe place.
MB 8:38-42 — משמוש = a fresh putting-on; נפלה כולה/מקצתה; הישן בטליתו. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he sets the principle of מִשְׁמוּשׁ (seifim כ, כט), specifies נפילה — מקצת על גופו דווקא (exempt) / על ידו (obligated), and recommends keeping the talit katan during daytime sleep.

Table drawn from the full text of the Mechaber (Orah Haim ח׳, Sefaria source), from verifiable nossei kelim (Beit Yossef, Tur, Magen Avraham, Taz, Mishna Berura, Beur Halakha, Pri Megadim, Arukh haShulchan, Kaf haḤaim, Kol Bo, Terumat haDeshen, Agour) and from Chabad thought at the level of principle. The Alter Rebbe column rests on the actual text of the Shulchan Arukh HaRav reproduced in §1. Uncertain seif katan attributions are left « על דרך הסברה ».

The defining lines of the Rav's way on this siman

Four orientations that characterise the Alter Rebbe's sensibility on the laws of tzitzit and the עיטוף — beyond the mere application of the rules. Each follows the structure: principle of the siman → the Rav's reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the actual text of the Rav (§1).

The עיטוף and its measure

Principle of the siman: the machloket עיטוף / לבישה; the halakha is כסברא השנייה — the mitzva is the לבישה (seifim ה-ו).

The Rav's reading: מן המובחר, על דרך הסברה, to enwrap oneself כעטיפת הישמעאלים בשעת ברכה and remain כְּדֵי הִלּוּךְ אַרְבַּע אַמּוֹת — to discharge both opinions.

Practical consequence: for the talit gadol, the עיטוף over the head at the time of the berakha, the ד׳ אמות, then one arranges it; the essential עיטוף is בגוף (seif ח).

The two berakhot according to the form of the talit

Principle of the siman: « להתעטף בציצית » (talit gadol), and on the talit katan — machloket Mechaber / Rama, where « על מצות ציצית » is the custom (seifim ב, ז).

The Rav's reading: he ties the נוסח to the form — single-piece talit katan (עיטוף) → « להתעטף »; sewn → « על מצות ציצית »; the berakha עובר לעשייתן and מעומד.

Practical consequence: say the berakha corresponding to the actual form of the talit; for one's community minhag, follow one's Rav.

דעת והפסק — one berakha or several

Principle of the siman: the דעת מתחילה and the הפסק (שיחה / הליכה / פשיטה) determine whether one blesses once or several times (seifim כא-כז).

The Rav's reading: דעת מתחילה + without הפסק שיחה → a single berakha; הליכה מהבית לבית הכנסת = הפסק; פשיטה ע״מ לחזור מיד ≠ הפסק; the remaining talit katan prevents the היסח הדעת.

Practical consequence: have the kavana from the outset on all the talitot; for a concrete case of doubt (whether to re-bless), consult a Rav — reference siman

The בדיקת הציצית — avoiding a ברכה לבטלה

Principle of the siman: separate the threads (seif יב) and inspect the tzitziyot each day before the berakha, lest a ברכה לבטלה (seifim יג-טז).

The Rav's reading: a daily בדיקה (« אם לא יבדקם בשעת הברכה לא יבדקם לעולם »), exempted for the rest of the day, lifted בשעת טורח הציבור, dispensed when the talit was left in a safe place.

Practical consequence: look at the threads each morning before blessing; if the tzibour is waiting (טורח הציבור), rely on yesterday's חזקה.

The practical Chabad conduct

Six points of conduct that follow directly from siman ח׳ in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and of Chabad — presented at the level of principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of particular cases and minhaguim.

For the Chabad Chassid — Siman

  • ① The עיטוף and the ד׳ אמות. For the talit gadol, enwrap oneself כעטיפת הישמעאלים (the head covered) at the time of the berakha and remain so כְּדֵי הִלּוּךְ אַרְבַּע אַמּוֹת, then arrange it on the shoulders — מן המובחר, to discharge both opinions. Basis: SA HaRav seifim ו, ז, ט.
  • ② The berakha according to the form of the talit. On the talit gadol: « לְהִתְעַטֵּף בַּצִּיצִית », standing and עובר לעשייתן. On the talit katan: « עַל מִצְוַת צִיצִית » (custom, וכן נוהגין); wear it over the garments in order to see it. Basis: SA HaRav seifim ב, ז, יח.
  • ③ Check the threads before blessing. Separate the threads, then inspect the tzitziyot each day (threads and corner) before the berakha, so as not to fall into a ברכה לבטלה; if the tzibour is waiting (טורח הציבור), rely on yesterday's חזקה. Basis: SA HaRav seifim יב-טו.
  • ④ The kavana « למען תזכרו ». In enwrapping oneself, have the kavana that Hashem commanded us the tzitzit כְּדֵי שֶׁנִּזְכֹּר כָּל מִצְוֹתָיו לַעֲשׂוֹתָם (« וראיתם אותו וזכרתם ») ; keep the tzitziyot מבחוץ (visible). Basis: SA HaRav seifim יז-יט.
  • ⑤ A single berakha — דעת and הפסק. Several talitot with דעת מתחילה and without הפסק שיחה → a single berakha; the walk from the house to the synagogue is a הפסק (re-bless); the talit removed ע״מ לחזור מיד ≠ הפסק.
A talit fallen during the עמידה: at the end, ימשמש בציצית ויברך; a talit fallen entirely without intention → re-bless (not if a part remains on the body); sleeping by day while keeping the talit katan exempts from re-blessing. For a concrete case of doubt — consult a Rav. Basis: SA HaRav seifim כו, כט, ל.

⚠ This section presents the Chabad conduct grounded in the Shulchan Arukh of the Alter Rebbe, siman ח׳ (actual text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — and especially for cases of doubt (whether to re-bless, הפסק): consult your Rav, and for Chabad, a Chabad Rav.
