Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman In the Rav it unfolds over ו׳ סְעִיפִים (six seifim) : the חֲגִירָה and the חֲצִיצָה between heart and ערוה, the אֵזוֹר מִשּׁוּם ״הִכּוֹן״, the covering of the head and the אַזְכָּרָה, the straw hat and placing a hand, the dignity of the legs and the אֲפוּנְדָּא, and finally the עֲטִיפָה with adornment and the clasping of the hands בְּעֵת הַזַּעַם.

The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.91), followed by our English translation. The siman has six seifim (ו׳ סְעִיפִים ; seif k → .91.k).
Covering the heart. It goes without saying that the ערוה must be covered and that the heart must not « see » the ערוה. But even if a טַלִּית is tied around his loins to cover him from the waist down and forms a חֲצִיצָה so the heart does not see the ערוה — it is forbidden to pray until he covers his heart, for the reason explained in siman ע״ד. And if he did not cover his heart, or was compelled (נֶאֱנַס) and has nothing with which to cover himself — since he covered his ערוה and prayed — יָצָא (he has fulfilled his duty).
The אֵזוֹר because of ״הִכּוֹן״. One must gird an אֵזוֹר at the time of prayer, even if he has an אַבְנֵט such that the heart does not see the ערוה, because of the verse ״הִכּוֹן לִקְרַאת אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל״ (« Prepare to meet your God, O Israel »). But for the other בְּרָכוֹת it is permitted to bless without a חֲגוֹרָה, since he has an אַבְנֵט in his מִכְנָסַיִם and the heart does not see the ערוה. And likewise even without מכנסיים if his garments rest right on his belly and form a חֲצִיצָה between heart and ערוה. And one who goes all day without a חֲגוֹרָה — need not gird for prayer.
Covering the head. It is forbidden to utter an אַזְכָּרָה (mention of the Name) with an uncovered head. And יש אומרים that one should protest so people do not enter the בית הכנסת with an uncovered head. And it is a מִדַּת חֲסִידוּת not to walk ד׳ אַמּוֹת with an uncovered head, even outside the בית הכנסת, as explained in siman ב׳.
Straw hat and placing a hand. Hats woven from straw (קַשׁ) count as a כִּסּוּי (covering). But placing one’s own hand on his head is not a כִּסּוּי, because the hand and the head are one body and the body cannot cover itself. However, if another places his hand on his head — יֵשׁ לְהָקֵל (one may be lenient), since the רש״ל is entirely lenient.
Dignity of the legs and dress. One should not stand in prayer with his אֲפוּנְדָּא (money-belt), nor with uncovered legs if the custom of the people of the place is to stand before the great only בְּבָתֵּי רַגְלַיִם (leggings). But if their custom is to stand barefoot before the great, as בְּאֶרֶץ הָעֲרָב (in Arab lands) — it is permitted to pray יָחֵף (barefoot). In these countries one should not pray in linen בָּתֵּי שׁוֹקַיִם without wearing over them אַנְפִּילָאוֹת (זאקי״ן), for it is an affront to stand before the great in linen בָּתֵּי שׁוֹקַיִם alone, and all the more so in a סַנְדָּל (פאנטאפי״ל) whose heel is exposed. And likewise, one should not wear during prayer בָּתֵּי יָדַיִם (gloves) in the manner of travelers.
Wrapping and adornment. The way of the חכמים and their students is to pray only when עֲטוּפִים (wrapped). The early חכמים, in a time of peace, would adorn themselves in fine garments and pray, because of ״הִכּוֹן כו׳״ — that is, to beautify oneself before Him. But בְּעֵת הַזַּעַם (in a time of wrath) they would stand like a servant before his master who casts off his cloak so as not to appear important, and who clasps (חוֹבֵק) his hands by his fingers out of fear of his master — that is, he interlocks the fingers of one hand with the other like a man who « breaks » his fingers when in pain. Some of the חכמים did so even בְּעֵת שָׁלוֹם. Nevertheless, it is good to be careful not to clasp one’s fingers בְּעֵת שָׁלוֹם, for by this one draws down דין upon himself ; rather, let him place his hands one upon the other כְּפוּתִין (bound), as explained in siman צ״ה.

The yesod : dress for prayer
The Alter Rebbe’s reading of this siman unfolds along four axes. First the אֵזוֹר and covering the heart — the חֲצִיצָה between heart and ערוה, מִשּׁוּם ״הִכּוֹן״. Then כִּסּוּי הָרֹאשׁ — the אַזְכָּרָה and מִדַּת חֲסִידוּת. Then the dignity of the legs and dress — the אֲפוּנְדָּא and מִנְהַג הַמָּקוֹם. Finally the עֲטִיפָה and adornment — with the clasping of the hands בְּעֵת הַזַּעַם.
The אֵזוֹר and covering the heart
The principle. One prays only once the heart is covered and a חֲצִיצָה made בֵּין הַלֵּב לָעֶרְוָה ; and one girds an אֵזוֹר מִשּׁוּם ״הִכּוֹן לִקְרַאת אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל״ (seifim א-ב).
The consequence. The חֲגִירָה of prayer exceeds mere modesty : it is a duty of preparation (הַכָּנָה) before the King. Cf. siman 74 (חֲצִיצַת הַלֵּב).
Covering the head
The principle. אָסוּר לְהוֹצִיא אַזְכָּרָה בְּרֹאשׁ מְגֻלֶּה ; a מִדַּת חֲסִידוּת not to walk ד׳ אַמּוֹת bareheaded (seif ג).
The consequence. A כּוֹבַע קַשׁ counts as כִּסּוּי ; one’s own hand does not, but another’s hand — יֵשׁ לְהָקֵל. Cf. siman 2 (גִּלּוּי הָרֹאשׁ).
The dignity of legs and dress
The principle. לֹא בַּאֲפוּנְדָּא, nor בְּרַגְלַיִם מְגֻלִּים according to the מִנְהַג הַמָּקוֹם before the great ; nor בָּתֵּי יָדַיִם (gloves) (seif ה).
The consequence. The criterion is relative כָּבוֹד — what would be an affront before a person of rank is one before the King. Cf. siman 90 (מְקוֹם הַתְּפִלָּה).
Wrapping and adornment
The principle.
The consequence. The Rav warns : not to חוֹבֵק אֶצְבְּעוֹתָיו בְּעֵת שָׁלוֹם, for מוֹרִיד דִּין עַל עַצְמוֹ. Cf. siman 95 (הַנָּחַת הַיָּדַיִם).
A note for study. The scope of this siman — the חֲגִירָה, covering the head, the כָּבוֹד and the עֲטִיפָה — bears on the daily preparation for prayer. This page presents it at the level of the principle attested in the Rav’s text, adding nothing invented. For deep study and personal conduct, study with a Habad Rav and in the texts themselves.

The lines of force of the Rav’s way on this siman
Three orientations that mark the Alter Rebbe’s sensibility on this siman. Each follows the structure : principle of the siman → the Rav’s reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the Rav’s real text (§1).
Line 1 — girding as preparation
Principle of the siman :
The Rav’s reading : the חֲגִירָה is a matter of הַכָּנָה before the King, not modesty alone ; מִי שֶׁהוֹלֵךְ בְּלֹא חֲגוֹרָה — אֵין צָרִיךְ. Cf. siman 74.
Practical consequence : gird an אֵזוֹר for the Amida, even when already wearing a garment that forms a חֲצִיצָה.
Line 2 — covering the head
Principle of the siman :
The Rav’s reading : a כּוֹבַע קַשׁ counts as כִּסּוּי ; one’s own hand does not (גּוּף אֶחָד), but another’s hand — יֵשׁ לְהָקֵל. Cf. siman 2.
Practical consequence : never utter the Name bareheaded ; cover the head even outside the
Line 3 — dignity, wrapping and hands
Principle of the siman :
The Rav’s reading : Cf. siman 95 (הַנָּחַת הַיָּדַיִם).
Practical consequence : pray עָטוּף and dressed with כָּבוֹד ; place the hands כְּפוּתִין, without interlocking the fingers.
Habad practice
Points of conduct that follow directly from siman צ״א in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and Habad — presented at the level of the principle, deferring to the Rav for the detail of cases.
For the Habad Hassid — Siman
- ① Covering the heart. Do not pray until the heart is covered and a חֲצִיצָה made בֵּין הַלֵּב לָעֶרְוָה.
Gird an אֵזוֹר for the Amida מִשּׁוּם ״הִכּוֹן״, even with an אַבְנֵט ; for other בְּרָכוֹת — אֵין צָרִיךְ. Basis : SA HaRav צ״א seif ב.
- ③ Covering the head. Never an אַזְכָּרָה bareheaded ; a מִדַּת חֲסִידוּת not to walk ד׳ אַמּוֹת bareheaded.
- ④ Dignity of the legs. No אֲפוּנְדָּא nor uncovered legs per the מִנְהַג הַמָּקוֹם ; no בָּתֵּי יָדַיִם (gloves) during prayer. Basis : SA HaRav צ״א seif ה.
Pray עָטוּף and dressed with כָּבוֹד ; place the hands one upon the other כְּפוּתִין, without חוֹבֵק אֶצְבְּעוֹתָיו in a time of peace (מוֹרִיד דִּין). Basis : SA HaRav צ״א seif ו.
⚠ This section presents Habad conduct grounded in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman צ״א (real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — the חֲגִירָה, covering the head, the עֲטִיפָה — consult your Rav, and for Habad, a Habad Rav.
