This siman teaches the direction of prayer : one standing in חוץ לארץ turns his face כנגד ארץ ישראל, in ארץ ישראל toward ירושלים, in ירושלים toward the מקדש and the בית קדשי הקדשים ; מי שאינו יכול לכוין הרוחות — one who cannot orient himself — יכוין לבו לאביו שבשמים ; and the דין הרוכב or the יושב בספינה who prays דרך הילוכו. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ט׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Our Sages taught (ברכות ל׳.): היה עומד בחוץ לארץ יכוין את לבו כנגד ארץ ישראל, היה עומד בארץ ישראל יכוין את לבו כנגד ירושלים, היה עומד בירושלים יכוין את לבו כנגד בית המקדש — one who prays directs his heart toward the place of קדושה according to where he stands. The siman deals with this direction (נכח ירושלים), with one who cannot determine the directions, and with one who prays while traveling. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

📑 Study outline

A. The ט׳ seifim — the direction נכח ירושלים (seif 1-2), לכוין לבו לאביו שבשמים (seif 3), הרוכב והיושב בספינה (seif 4-5), חולה, סמיכה and חוזר מעומד (seif 6-9)
1. Practical case — orienting in the synagogue: toward
2. Practical case — praying while traveling: מתפלל דרך הילוכו
3. Practical case — the sick person and leaning: אפילו שוכב על צדו, שלא לסמוך עצמו

A. The direction of prayer — the ט׳ seifim

צָרִיךְ לְכַוֵּן נֶגֶד אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל — one must direct oneself toward the Land of Israel — at the time of the עמידה, every Jew directs his heart and face toward one place: according to where he stands he aims toward ארץ ישראל, then ירושלים, then the מקדש, then the בית קדשי הקדשים, so that נמצאו כל ישראל מכוונים לבם למקום אחד. And when it is impossible to orient oneself, what remains essential is the כוונה of the heart: יכוין לבו לאביו שבשמים.

Seif 1-2 — נכח ירושלים: the direction according to place

Seif 1: upon rising to pray, one standing outside the Land of Israel (בחוץ לארץ) turns his face toward ארץ ישראל and directs his heart also toward ירושלים, the מקדש and the בית קדשי הקדשים. One standing in ארץ ישראל turns his face toward ירושלים. One standing in ירושלים turns it toward the מקדש and the בית קדשי הקדשים.
One target, in stages. Wherever he is, one aims toward the holiest point accessible: from abroad toward ארץ ישראל, in the Holy Land toward ירושלים, in the city toward the מקדש, up to the בית קדשי הקדשים. The Rama (seif 2) adds: we turn our face למזרח, since we dwell to the west of ארץ ישראל — so our face is indeed turned toward it. We do not set the ark exactly opposite the sunrise (דרך המינים), but toward the middle of the day.

Seif 3: one who cannot determine the compass directions (הרוחות) directs his heart to his Father in Heaven (לאביו שבשמים).
Physical orientation is only a means; the essence is the כוונה of the heart. One who does not know where the east lies — a blind person, a lost traveler, one confined — יכוין לבו לאביו שבשמים, and his prayer is complete. For the place toward which all turn is, at bottom, but a reminder of the One to whom one prays.

Seif 4-5 — הרוכב והיושב בספינה: praying while traveling

Seif 4: one riding a donkey need not descend to pray — even if he has someone to hold his donkey — but prays while going (דרך הילוכו). Likewise on a boat or a wagon (קרון): if he can stand he stands, if not he sits in his place and prays. And all is according to the route, the place, his fear and his peace of mind
The Torah did not want the traveler to lose his concentration: if he had to stop, the delay of his journey would trouble him and he could not לכוין. He is therefore allowed to pray דרך הילוכו, even without facing ירושלים. יש מחמירין to stand at least for ברכת אבות (the beginning of the עמידה), and it is fitting to heed them when it is not a place of danger.

Seif 6: a sick person prays even lying on his side, provided he can concentrate his thought Seif 8: one takes care not to lean on a pillar or on one's fellow during prayer. Seif 9: one who was compelled to pray sitting must, when able, return and pray standing, without adding anything to it.
Three teachings on the body in the service of כוונה: the חולה prays in whatever position he can, so long as his דעת is settled; one does not lean during the עמידה (for one must stand as a servant before his master); and one who prayed sitting under compulsion, if his strength returns, חוזר ומתפלל מעומד — yet need not add anything, for he already fulfilled the essence of the מצוה.
The siman in one sentence: one must direct prayer נכח ירושלים — from חו״ל toward ארץ ישראל, from ארץ ישראל toward ירושלים, from ירושלים toward the מקדש ; one who cannot orient himself יכוין לבו לאביו שבשמים ; the רוכב or the יושב בספינה prays דרך הילוכו, הכל לפי ישוב דעתו ; the חולה prays even lying down, one does not lean, and one who prayed sitting under compulsion חוזר ומתפלל מעומד when able.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Orienting in the synagogue

Situation: I pray in חוץ לארץ, to the west of ארץ ישראל. Which way should I turn?
Conduct: one turns his face כנגד ארץ ישראל, and directs his heart toward ירושלים, the מקדש and the בית קדשי הקדשים. Since we dwell to the west of the Land of Israel, one turns למזרח (Rama). Synagogues therefore place the ark on the eastern wall. For the precise orientation of your town, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Praying while traveling

Situation: I am on the road (riding, by boat, in a vehicle) and the time of prayer arrives. Must I stop?
Conduct: the רוכב need not descend — he prays דרך הילוכו; likewise on a ספינה or in a קרון: if he can stand he stands, if not he prays seated in his place. יש מחמירין to stand at least for אבות. All depends on the route and the ישוב הדעת; for practical application, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — The sick person and leaning

Situation: a sick person cannot stand; or someone wishes to lean against a wall during the עמידה. What to do?
Conduct: the חולה prays in whatever position he can, אפילו שוכב על צדו, provided he can לכוין דעתו. One does not lean on a pillar or on one's fellow during prayer. And one who prayed sitting under compulsion חוזר ומתפלל מעומד when able. For borderline cases, one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Which way does one turn depending on whether he is in חוץ לארץ, in ארץ ישראל or in ירושלים (seif 1)?
  2. Why do we מחזירין פנינו למזרח according to the Rama (seif 2)?
  3. What does one who cannot determine the רוחות do, and what do we learn from it (seif 3)?
  4. Why may the רוכב pray דרך הילוכו without descending (seif 4)?
  5. May the חולה pray lying down, and what must be avoided during the עמידה (seif 6, 8)?
