This siman teaches how to remove distractions (הטרדות) so as to concentrate in prayer: while praying, one does not hold in hand תפילין, a ספר, a קערה מלאה, a סכין, מעות or a ככר, מפני שלבו עליהם שלא יפלו; but a לולב בזמנו is permitted (holding it is a mitzvah) and likewise a מחזור תפלות held for the prayer. The הגהת הרמ״א adds that one does not go after it during the Amidah except in a prepared place. Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ב׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

The Choulhan Aroukh teaches: כשהוא מתפלל לא יאחוז בידו תפילין... מפני שלבו עליהם שלא יפלו ויטרד ותתבטל כוונתו — while praying, one does not hold in hand objects whose fall one fears, for this fear occupies the heart and nullifies the כוונה. The siman contrasts two kinds of objects: those that distract (fragile or valuable), and those held for a mitzvah or for the prayer itself (the לולב, the מחזור), which do not distract. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. Removing distractions — the ב׳ seifim

שֶׁיִּמָּנַע כָּל הַטְּרָדוֹת כְּדֵי שֶׁיְּכַוֵּן — removing every distraction in order to concentrate — a principle and its limit. The principle: one does not hold in hand an object whose fall worries him (תפילין, ספר, קערה מלאה, סכין, מעות, ככר), because שלבו עליהם — the heart remains fixed on them — which distracts and nullifies the כוונה. The limit: an object held for a mitzvah (the לולב בזמנו) or for the prayer itself (the מחזור) does not distract — on the contrary, holding it serves the service. Hence too the הגהת הרמ״א on not going after the מחזור during the Amidah.

Séif 1 — לא יאחוז בידו: not holding what distracts

Séif 1: while praying, one does not hold in hand תפילין, nor a ספר מכתבי הקודש (book of holy writings), nor a קערה מלאה (full bowl), nor a סכין (knife), nor מעות (money), nor a ככר (loaf), מפני שלבו עליהם שלא יפלו — because one's heart is upon them lest they fall — which distracts (ויטרד) and nullifies the concentration (ותתבטל כוונתו). But a לולב בזמנו (a lulav at its time) is permitted to hold in hand, כיון שהאחיזה בידו היא מצוה — since holding it is a mitzvah — אינו נטרד בשבילו (one is not distracted by it).
The reason is not the sanctity of the object but the fear of the fall: תפילין, ספר, a full קערה, סכין, מעות, ככר — all are things one watches lest they fall, break or spill; this watching שלבו עליהם occupies the heart and nullifies the כוונה. By contrast, the לולב בזמנו — whose holding is itself the mitzvah — does not distract: the occupied hand then serves the divine service rather than disturbing it.

Séif 2 — מחזור תפלות: holding the prayer book

Séif 2: it is permitted to hold a מחזור תפלות (prayer book) in hand while one prays, הואיל ותופס לצורך תפלה עצמה — since one holds it for the need of the prayer itself — לא טריד דומיא דלולב (one is not distracted, similar to the lulav). Gloss (הגה): ומכל מקום — nevertheless — if it was not in his hand before he began, he shall not go after it during prayer to take it (לא יחזיר אחריו בתפלה ליטלו), unless it was in a designated, prepared place; then it is permitted to take it even in the middle of the prayer כדי להתפלל מתוכו (in order to pray from it).
The מחזור or סידור is like the lulav: one holds it לצורך תפלה עצמה, for the prayer itself, so it does not distract — rather it helps. The הגהת הרמ״א sets a practical limit: one does not go after it once the Amidah has begun (this would be an interruption), unless it is in a prepared place within reach; then one may take it even in the middle of the prayer to read from it.
The siman in one sentence: during prayer one does not hold in hand an object whose fall worries him (תפילין, ספר, קערה, סכין, מעות, ככר) because שלבו עליהם nullifies the כוונה; but one holds without worry what serves a mitzvah (the לולב בזמנו) or the prayer itself (the מחזור) — and per the הגהת הרמ״א, one does not go after the מחזור during the Amidah, unless it is in a prepared place.

Practical cases

Case 1 — Holding an object during the Amidah

Situation: he begins the Amidah holding his phone, his keys or a fragile object. Is this permitted?
Conduct: the spirit of séif 1 is that one does not hold in hand an object whose fall or loss he fears (תפילין, ספר, קערה, סכין, מעות, ככר), מפני שלבו עליהם — the worry occupies the heart and nullifies the כוונה. One therefore sets these objects down before beginning. For the application to today's objects, one follows one's Rav.

Case 2 — Holding a לולב or a mitzvah object

Situation: on Sukkot he holds his לולב during Hallel or the Amidah. Does this not distract?
Conduct: the לולב בזמנו is מותר to hold, כיון שהאחיזה בידו היא מצוה — since holding it is itself a mitzvahאינו נטרד בשבילו. The rule applies to an object held for the mitzvah and not out of fear of its fall. For the details, one follows one's Rav.

Case 3 — The מחזור and going after it

Situation: he began the Amidah without a מחזור and wants to go take one from a shelf. May he?
Conduct: holding a מחזור to pray from it is מותר (לצורך תפלה עצמה, דומיא דלולב). But per the הגהת הרמ״א, if it was not in his hand before he began, he does not turn back to take it during the Amidah — unless it is in a prepared place within reach, where he may then take it even in the middle of the prayer. For the practice, one follows one's Rav.

Comprehension questions

Check your understanding:
  1. Why does one not hold in hand תפילין, ספר, קערה, סכין, מעות or ככר during prayer (séif 1)?
  2. What is the exact reason — the sanctity of the object or the fear of its fall (שלבו עליהם)?
  3. Why is the לולב בזמנו permitted to hold whereas a ספר is not (séif 1)?
  4. Why may one hold a מחזור during prayer (séif 2)?
  5. What does the הגהת הרמ״א say about going after the מחזור during the Amidah (séif 2)?
