Why a dedicated Level 4 for the Alter Rebbe? The Shulchan Aruch HaRav is not a commentary on the Mechaber (מחבר) — it is an autonomous and complete Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe. Its uniqueness: it combines halakha (הלכה) + ta'amei ha-mitzvos + inner dimension in a single work, and it rules with a singular Talmudic rigor.
For Chabad, the Alter Rebbe is the final posek (הפוסק האחרון). This page gathers, for Siman רנ״א, the full text of the Rav, his originality, and the words of the Rebbe (דברי הרבי) that illuminate the subject.

Source: Kehot edition, as reproduced on Sefaria. 5 seifim + 1 entry of Kuntres Acharon (קונטרס אחרון).
That one should not perform melachah on the eve of Shabbos from mincha onward, and it contains 5 se'ifim:
The Sages forbade performing melachah on the eve of Shabbos and on the eve of Yom Tov from mincha onward. And whoever does so never sees any sign of blessing from that melachah, for what he gains thereby he loses in counterpart from another place. However, he is not punished for it, neither with excommunication nor with the disciplinary lashes (makkos mardus) ordinarily given for one who transgresses the words of the Sages, since they did not so greatly stringent in this prohibition. Nonetheless, he is rebuked and forcibly stopped from performing it, against his will.
Some say that this prohibition applies from mincha gedolah onward, that is, from six and a half hours of the day onward. And some say that it is from mincha ketanah, that is, from nine and a half hours onward. As to the practical halachah: one who is lenient in the words of the Scribes has not lost the blessing.
They only prohibited a full melachah, but perakmatia (commerce) is permitted, up to a measure that will be explained in siman 256.
And even a full melachah is only forbidden when one sets himself to it; but it is permitted to perform a melachah for a moment in a casual manner (derech arai) — for instance, if it happens to him to write a letter of greetings or the like — for they only forbade performing a melachah in a fixed manner, so that he be free to engage in the needs of Shabbos.
(And even one who has no need at all to engage in the needs of Shabbos is forbidden to perform a melachah from mincha onward, since the Sages did not wish to make a distinction in their decree.)
And even to set oneself to a full melachah, there is only prohibition when it is not for the needs of Shabbos, or even for the needs of Shabbos but one is doing it for pay; but to perform it for the needs of Shabbos free of charge — for instance, sewing garments for the needs of Shabbos, whether for oneself or for one's fellow free of charge — is permitted all day. And likewise it is permitted to transcribe books to study in them, whether one writes for oneself or for one's fellow free of charge, since it is a matter of mitzvah — this is like the needs of Shabbos.
It is forbidden to give a haircut to a non-Jew on the eve of Shabbos from mincha onward, even a haircut that is an ordinary work (maaseh hedyot), and even if one gives it free of charge, since there is no need of Shabbos in this melachah.
But it is permitted to give a haircut to a Jew all day, even a craftsman's work (maaseh uman), and even for pay. And this is not similar to sewing of garments and other melachos, for there it is not noticeable that the melachah is being done now on account of Shabbos — therefore there is permission only free of charge (since when one takes pay, this is as if it is being done solely on account of his pay, and is not being done now at all on account of Shabbos); but a haircut is noticeable that it is being performed now on account of Shabbos.
One who is poor and wishes to perform a melachah to earn wages, in order to spend the earnings on the needs of Shabbos — it is permitted for him to perform it the whole day. For even on chol hamoed it is permitted for him to perform all melachos in this manner, as will be explained in siman 542; and all the more so on the eve of Shabbos from mincha onward, which is lighter than chol hamoed. Therefore, whatever is permitted on chol hamoed — all the more so is it permitted on the eve of Shabbos the whole day, even for pay.

"Perakmatia, etc." — See Magen Avraham, sk 1. And although his second proof is contradicted by his own words at sk 4, and in siman 256 his words also appear to contradict one another, nevertheless the first proof stands. For at the end of the first chapter of Shabbos, Rashi explains that from Tyre to Sidon is a day's journey, and so they arrived there close to nightfall and traded there until the second blast, which is one hour before the emergence of the stars, or even until close to twilight (bein hashmashos) as written below. And all the more so according to the view that holds mincha gedolah: one cannot say in any way that they arrived there much before mincha gedolah such that they would have had time to trade before mincha gedolah, for then what novelty does the beraisa teach us by permitting them to set sail, since there is no journey of half a day? And so too for the view that mincha ketanah permits — on this point they do not disagree. And although this proof supports Rashi's commentary, and not the Rambam's explanation as set out in siman 248, and Rashi holds mincha ketanah — nevertheless the Tur, who holds mincha gedolah, holds like Rashi and not like the Rambam, since he did not bring this in siman 248; study it well. And likewise for Rashi who holds mincha ketanah, one must say that the case of the people of Beishan speaks specifically of after mincha ketanah, in accordance with what the Ran writes at the beginning of chapter 4 of Pesachim, that on other eves of Yom Tov and Shabbos, even if it was customary in some places to forbid melachah before mincha, it is of no consequence; see there.
The second proof also accords well with the view that holds mincha gedolah. For according to it, one must say that the second blast was at mincha ketanah, to stop the city from the permitted melachos — such as when one needs the earnings for the expenses of Shabbos, as the Taz writes, or a melachah that is for the needs of Shabbos but is of such an involved nature that there is concern that one might be drawn out — as the Magen Avraham writes at siman 232 concerning mincha, whose time extends until the emergence of the stars, and nevertheless from mincha ketanah onward these melachos are forbidden — and so too regarding Shabbos. And those who permit the permitted melachos must be speaking of a case where there is no concern that one might be drawn out, for otherwise, how would it differ from mincha? Or it may be that the second blast was a half-hour before the time of accepting Shabbos, since then it is self-evident that one must forbid even the permitted melachos if there is concern of being drawn out — just as they forbade them, and eating, a half-hour before the time of mincha and maariv. And since the time of accepting Shabbos is at minimum a half-hour before the emergence of the stars (as the Rama writes at siman 256) — that is, slightly before twilight, which is about a third or a quarter of an hour (see siman 459), in order to add from the profane onto the sacred (see Magen Avraham siman 261) — therefore the Magen Avraham at siman 256 writes that at any rate, one hour before the emergence of the stars, it is fitting to close the shops, even though this is a permitted melachah, in any case lest one be drawn out, "for I have seen the magnitude of the failure, etc."; and this is fitting even for one who wishes to be lenient in the words of the Scribes like the view that holds mincha gedolah. But the Magen Avraham holds like the view that mincha ketanah, because it appears forced to him to set the beraisa in regard to the permitted melachos; rather he holds that the second blast was at mincha ketanah, as he writes in siman 256, to stop the forbidden melachos, even in a case where there is no concern of being drawn out; and as for closing the shops, it is because of concern that one might be drawn out — since at times a high officer comes, etc. But other perakmatia which is of a nature in which there is no concern of being drawn out is permitted as long as one can finish it before the acceptance of Shabbos. And the first blast was before mincha ketanah, so that those in the fields would enter the city before mincha ketanah and have time to engage in the needs of Shabbos for two and a half hours from mincha ketanah onward, like the city-dwellers — for it is precisely for this reason that they forbade melachah from mincha ketanah onward.
But according to the Tur, who holds mincha gedolah, one cannot say so, since he wrote at siman 256 that the first blast was at mincha; and there is no reason to say that the first blast was much before mincha gedolah. As for the language of the Rambam, who writes in Hilchos Yom Tov chapter 8 that one shall not perform melachah on the eve of Yom Tov from mincha onward like the eve of Shabbos, and in Hilchos Shabbos mentioned nothing of the sort, having only written the six blasts at the end of chapter 5 and concluding there that the first blast was at mincha — this somewhat implies that the prohibition of melachah even in the city extends from the first blast onward, since he did not mention "field" in Hilchos Yom Tov. Likewise in the beraisa at the start of the chapter "Makom Shenahagu," the field is not mentioned, and he made the whole matter depend upon the blasts. And "mincha" without qualification in his language is mincha ketanah, as is clear from his words in Hilchos Tefilah, and as is shown by his unqualified "mincha" with respect to the eve of Pesach — see there — similar to "he shall not eat from mincha onward" in chapter 6 of Hilchos Yom Tov, which means mincha ketanah. And one must say that the second blast was to stop the city from buying and selling, as the Ran explained according to our version, if it is not defective. According to this, we have no power to close the shops even according to the view that mincha ketanah, except a half-hour before the time of accepting Shabbos, as written in siman 256.

The force of the psak (פסק) of the Alter Rebbe
Comparison of the position of the Alter Rebbe with those of the Mechaber (מחבר), the Rama (רמ״א) and the Mishnah Berurah (משנה ברורה) on the key points of Siman רנ״א.
| Topic | Mechaber | Rama (רמ״א) | Mishnah Berurah (משנה ברורה) | Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General framework of the prohibition | OC 251:1 — "העושה מלאכה בערב שבת מן המנחה ולמעלה אינו רואה סימן ברכה יש מפרשים מנחה גדולה ויש מפרשים מנחה קטנה". One who performs a מלאכה on the eve of Shabbat from מנחה onward sees no sign of blessing from that melakha. The Mechaber himself gives both readings of the threshold, מנחה גדולה and מנחה קטנה, and does not decide between them. | Hagaha on OC 251:1: the gloss restricts the prohibition to work done דרך קבע; done דרך עראי, occasionally and without fixing oneself to it, it remains permitted — "ולכן מותר לכתוב אגרת שלומים וכל כיוצא בזה". | MB 251:1-2 — summary: ס״ק א — trade (פרקמטיא) is not included in the prohibition; for the hour at which the shops should be closed, the ס״ק refers to the Biur Halacha and to siman 256. ס״ק ב — the sign of blessing that is missing is that of this melakha itself: what he gains by it here, he loses elsewhere. | Shulchan Aruch HaRav רנ״א:1 — summary: it is the Sages who forbade melakha on the eve of Shabbat and the eve of Yom Tov from mincha onward; one who does so never sees a sign of blessing from that melakha, for what he gains by it he loses elsewhere. But he is not punished for it — neither nidui nor makot mardut — for they did not treat this prohibition so severely; he is nonetheless rebuked and made to stop, even against his will. |
| Distinction mincha gedola / mincha ketana | OC 251:1 — the Mechaber himself sets out both readings of the threshold, יש מפרשים מנחה גדולה ויש מפרשים מנחה קטנה, and adopts neither. The reckoning of the hours and the practical conduct come from the Acharonim. | — (no הגהה detailing the thresholds) | MB 251:3 — "היינו בשש ומחצה ומנחה קטנה היינו תשע ומחצה והסומך על המקילין לא הפסיד והשעות הם זמניות" (מ״ב רנ״א ס״ק ג): מנחה גדולה is at six and a half hours, מנחה קטנה at nine and a half, the hours being זמניות, and one who relies on the lenient opinion has lost nothing. The ס״ק adds that all this applies to one doing his own melakha: a labourer hired by an employer has his own term, close to sunset (חו״מ סימן של״א). | Shulchan Aruch HaRav רנ״א:2 — summary: יש אומרים that this prohibition runs from mincha gedolah, that is from six and a half hours; יש אומרים that it runs from mincha ketanah, from nine and a half hours. And as to the halakha: "וּלְעִנְיַן הֲלָכָה, הַמֵּקֵל בְּדִבְרֵי סוֹפְרִים — לֹא הִפְסִיד הַבְּרָכָה" (שו״ע הרב רנ״א:ב). |
| Types of work concerned | OC 251:2 — "לתקן בגדיו וכליו לצורך שבת מותר כל היום": the Mechaber does not enumerate the forbidden melakhot; he states what remains permitted all day — mending one's clothes and utensils for Shabbat, and likewise writing books for oneself in the course of one's study. | Hagaha on OC 251:2: the gloss extends the permission to another's clothes when it is for Shabbat and he takes no wage for it; and it forbids writing for another for a wage — "אבל אסור לכתוב לחבירו בשכר". | MB 251:6 — summary: ס״ק ו — one who writes סת״ם should likewise take care not to write for a wage, unless he needs a mezuzah, a sefer Torah or tefillin now, or is pressed by the needs of Shabbat. | Shulchan Aruch HaRav רנ״א:3 — "לֹא אָסְרוּ אֶלָּא מְלָאכָה גְמוּרָה" (שו״ע הרב רנ״א:ג): trade (פרקמטיא) remains permitted up to the measure set out in siman 256, and even a melakha in the full sense is forbidden only when one fixes oneself to it — the occasional, such as writing a letter of greeting, remains permitted. Sewing garments for Shabbat, for oneself or for another, without charge, is permitted all day, as is copying books to study from them. |
| Haircutting on Friday | — (the Mechaber does not treat haircutting in this siman; it is the Rama's הגהה that adds it) | Hagaha on OC 251:2: "ומסתפרין כל היום אפי׳ מספר ישראל" — one may have one's hair cut all day, even by a Jewish barber. | MB 251:7 — "היינו אפילו אם הספר נוטל שכר" (מ״ב רנ״א ס״ק ז): even if the barber takes a wage, because it is evident to all that one who has his hair cut does so for Shabbat — unlike the mending of clothes, which is forbidden for a wage. The ס״ק reports in the name of the Magen Avraham that the Arizal took care not to shave once the hour of mincha had come, even on the eve of Shabbat. | Shulchan Aruch HaRav רנ״א:4 — "אֲבָל מֻתָּר לְסַפֵּר אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל כָּל הַיּוֹם, אֲפִלּוּ מַעֲשֵׂה אֻמָּן, וַאֲפִלּוּ בְּשָׂכָר" (שו״ע הרב רנ״א:ד): it is, by contrast, forbidden to cut a gentile's hair from mincha onward, even without charge and even where it is a plain cut, since that melakha serves Shabbat in no way; cutting a Jew's hair, however, shows on its face that it is being done now for Shabbat. |
| The poor man who works for the needs of Shabbat | — (the Mechaber does not treat this case in this siman) | — (no הגהה on this point) | MB 251:5 — summary: ס״ק ה — if he is poor and has nothing to eat, it is permitted; and likewise all the melakhot permitted on the eve of Pesach and on chol hamoed are permitted on the eve of Shabbat (אחרונים). The ס״ק nonetheless warns: several poskim imply that beyond the absence of a sign of blessing there is a suspicion of prohibition here (פמ״ג). | Shulchan Aruch HaRav רנ״א:5 — "מִי שֶׁהוּא עָנִי וְרוֹצֶה לַעֲשׂוֹת מְלָאכָה לְהִשְׂתַּכֵּר לְהוֹצִיא הַשָּׂכָר לְצֹרֶךְ שַׁבָּת — מֻתָּר לוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת כָּל הַיּוֹם" (שו״ע הרב רנ״א:ה): and he derives it from chol hamoed (siman 542) — the eve of Shabbat being lighter than chol hamoed, whatever is permitted there is all the more permitted on the eve of Shabbat, all day and even for a wage. |

The chiddushim (חידושים) specific to the Rav on this siman
Original points that distinguish the Alter Rebbe on Siman רנ״א. Each chiddush (חידוש) follows the structure: classical position → chiddush of the Rav → practical consequence.
חידוש א — the reason for the gezerah, which does not narrow it (רנ״א:ג)
Chiddush 1 — the reason for the gezerah, which does not narrow it (רנ״א:3)
Why the prohibition — and why it binds even one who has nothing to prepare
Classical position: the Mechaber states the prohibition without giving its reason; the Rama draws from it the limit of work done דרך קבע, without framing it as a motive.
The chiddush of the Rav: the Alter Rebbe writes the reason into the text itself — only work done דרך קבע was forbidden, "כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּהְיֶה פָּנוּי לְהִתְעַסֵּק בְּצָרְכֵי שַׁבָּת" (שו״ע הרב רנ״א:ג) — and then immediately adds that even one who has no need whatever to occupy himself with the preparations for Shabbat is forbidden, לְפִי שֶׁלֹּא רָצוּ חֲכָמִים לְחַלֵּק בִּגְזֵרָתָם. The reason illuminates the gezerah without reducing its scope.
Practical consequence: one is not released from the prohibition on the ground that everything is already ready for Shabbat.
חידוש ב — two thresholds, and a rule for conduct (רנ״א:ב)
Chiddush 2 — two thresholds, and a rule for conduct (רנ״א:2)
Mincha gedolah, mincha ketanah: what the Alter Rebbe does with them
Classical position: the Mechaber sets the two readings side by side — יש מפרשים מנחה גדולה ויש מפרשים מנחה קטנה — without deciding between them and without reckoning the hour.
The chiddush of the Rav: the Alter Rebbe reckons both thresholds — six and a half hours for mincha gedolah, nine and a half for mincha ketanah — and then states the conduct: "וּלְעִנְיַן הֲלָכָה, הַמֵּקֵל בְּדִבְרֵי סוֹפְרִים — לֹא הִפְסִיד הַבְּרָכָה" (שו״ע הרב רנ״א:ב).
Practical consequence: the Mishnah Berurah says the same (מ״ב רנ״א ס״ק ג); both sources thus allow one to hold to mincha ketanah; refraining already from mincha gedolah is a matter of stringency. The hours are counted as שעות זמניות, and so vary with the season.
חידוש ג — what remains permitted, and on what ground (רנ״א:ג-ה)
Chiddush 3 — what remains permitted, and on what ground (רנ״א:3-5)
For Shabbat, without charge — and the exception of the haircut
Classical position: the Mechaber permits mending one's clothes and utensils for Shabbat all day; the Rama's הגהה adds haircutting.
The chiddush of the Rav: the Alter Rebbe orders these permissions around two features — the melakha serves Shabbat, and it is done without a wage: "כְּגוֹן לִתְפּוֹר בְּגָדִים לְצֹרֶךְ הַשַּׁבָּת, בֵּין לוֹ בֵּין לַחֲבֵרוֹ בְּחִנָּם — מֻתָּר כָּל הַיּוֹם" (שו״ע הרב רנ״א:ג), as is copying books to study from them. Haircutting is the exception as to the wage (רנ״א:ד), and he gives the reason: in a haircut it is evident that the work is being done now for Shabbat, which it is not in sewing.
Practical consequence: the question is not only is this work?, but is it for Shabbat, and can that be seen?

Practical Chabad conduct
Points of halakhic conduct that follow directly from the Shulchan Aruch HaRav Siman רנ״א, in the Chabad sensibility.
For the Chabad Chassid (חסיד) — Siman רנ״א
- ① Work by the two thresholds. The Rav's chiddush ב. Mincha gedolah = six and a half hours of the day; mincha ketanah = nine and a half, in שעות זמניות — hence varying with the season.
- ② Do not think oneself exempt because everything is ready. The Rav's chiddush א. Even one who has nothing to prepare for Shabbat remains bound by the prohibition. Reference: Shulchan Aruch HaRav רנ״א:ג.
- ③ What remains permitted all day. Mending one's clothes and utensils for Shabbat, sewing without charge for oneself or for another, copying books to study from them, and having one's hair cut.
- ④ Occasional work is not what the prohibition targets. What is forbidden is work done דרך קבע; done דרך עראי, without fixing oneself to it, it remains permitted — the Rama gives the example of a letter of greeting, and the Mishnah Berurah specifies that this is permitted even for a wage.
- ⑤ The poor man who needs his wage for Shabbat. He may work all day, even for a wage.
