1. The central axiom
שמא יחתה: the fear of the poker shapes the entire siman.
Siman רנ״ג codifies a single halakhic fear — שמא יחתה בגחלים — declined into three questions: (1) shehiya — may one leave a pot on the fire Friday for Shabbat? (2) hazara — may one return it on Shabbat? (3) hatmana — may one wrap it? The answer to each depends on three crossed variables: fuel (גפת/עצים vs קש/גבבא), vessel (kira / kupach / tanur), state of the tavshil (raw / ben drussai / fully cooked / מצטמק ויפה לו / מצטמק ורע לו). The modern plata ≈ gerufa u-ketuma — no embers to stoke, fixed heat.

2. The 3 questions of the siman (S-H-H)
Shehiya — Leaving on the fire Friday for Shabbat
- Permitted without restriction if: (a) plata = gerufa u-ketuma, or (b) tavshil cooked fully (כל צורכו) and מצטמק ורע לו, or (c) tavshil entirely raw (חי לגמרי)
- Mahloket (Hananya/Hakhamim): does מאכל בן דרוסאי suffice, or is כל צורכו required?
- Practice: Rama+Chabad — minhag lehakel (Hananya); Sephardim — Hakhamim (כל צורכו)
Hazara — Returning the pot on Shabbat
- 5 cumulative conditions (Mehaber + Rama)
- Tavshil cooled completely → forbidden (= new cooking)
- Inside the oven (לתוכה) → always forbidden, even gaduf v'katum
Hatmana — Burying/wrapping
- Friday: permitted if not מוסיף הבל
- Shabbat: forbidden even if not מוסיף הבל
- Full detail: siman רנ״ז
3. Hierarchy of cases
| Level | Type | Permitted? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — clearly permitted | Plata + tavshil cooked כל צורכו before Shabbat | ✓ |
| 2 — permitted per Hananya/Rama | Plata + tavshil cooked כמאכל בן דרוסאי | ✓ (Rama: minhag lehakel) |
| 3 — permitted via מסיח דעת | Pot with raw meat placed late Friday | ✓ (חי לגמרי) |
| 4 — forbidden (חיתוי) | Fire with embers + intermediate tavshil + not gaduf | ✗ |
| 5 — forbidden (hazara without conditions) | Cooled pot one wants to return | ✗ |
| 6 — forbidden (Talmudic tanur) | Tanur in its true sense even gaduf v'katum | ✗ |
| 7 — forbidden (hatmana on Shabbat) | Covering the pot with blankets on Shabbat | ✗ |
4. Mnemonic — S-H-K
S — Shehiya: leave on Friday → check autonomy (plata = gerufa u-ketuma) and state of the tavshil (≥ ben drussai, or raw, or מצטמק ורע לו).
H — Hazara: return on Shabbat → 5 conditions (gerufa, rotech, in hand, intention, on the kira).
K — Ketuma (gerufa u-ketuma): the transverse condition of the siman — no active embers, no organ to adjust. The modern plata is assimilated to it.
(Original French mnemonic: S-H-K — Shehiya · Hazara · Kotoumah)
To memorize: "S-H-K for siman 253: Shehiya (leave) before Shabbat, Hazara (return) on Shabbat with 5 conditions, all on Ketuma (plata)."
5. Decision tree
Question 1: Is the tavshil cooked כל צורכו before the entry of Shabbat?
↓
If YES + plata → permitted לכל הדעות
↓
If NO but ≥ ben drussai → permitted per Hananya/Rama (minhag lehakel)
↓
If NO and < ben drussai → tavshil must be entirely raw (chai legamre); otherwise forbidden
↓
Question 2: Returning on Shabbat? Check the 5 conditions (gerufa / rotech / in hand / intention / on the kira)
↓
If YES to all 5 → permitted
↓
If cooled or placed on the floor → forbidden לכתחילה; bediavad per Rama
↓
Question 3: No burying on Shabbat (blankets, isothermal pot)
↓
Question 4: No liquid added on Shabbat to the hot tavshil (Seif Daled)
↓
✓ PERMITTED if all questions answered correctly
6. Mehaber vs Rama
| Topic | Mehaber | Rama |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum cooking threshold (Seif Alef) | כל צורכו ומצטמק ורע לו (Hakhamim) | "נהגו להקל כסברא האחרונה" (Hananya, ben drussai) |
| Conditions of hazara (Seif Beit) | gerufa + rotechet + on the kira | + "עודה בידו" + "דעתו להחזיר" |
| תנורים שלנו (rectangular, side-opening) | — | "דינם כְּכִירָה" (major chiddush) |
| If one forgot and the tavshil is not cooked כל צורכו | — | Forbidden until end of Shabbat + כדי שיעשו |
| Cooled pot that one returns | — | "לכ"ע אסור" |
| Placing a solid on the kira to reheat (Seif Hé) | Permitted | Forbidden לכתחילה (limited to strict hazara) |
7. 5 pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1: Thinking that the plata solves everything. False — the plata = gerufa u-ketuma, but one still needs (a) the tavshil to have reached the cooking threshold before Shabbat, and (b) the conditions of hazara to be respected when returning.
Pitfall 2: Returning a cooled pot to the plata on Shabbat. Forbidden לכל הדעות — it is a new cooking (bishul belach / yavesh depending on the content).
Pitfall 3: Pouring hot water (from the מיחם) into the chamin/cholent that has reduced too much. Forbidden (Seif Daled) — בישול אחר בישול בלח.
Pitfall 4: Covering the pot on Shabbat with a blanket/pillow to keep heat. Forbidden — הטמנה במוסיף הבל in the middle of Shabbat.
Pitfall 5: Setting the slow cooker on Friday with raw meat that will be כמאכל בן דרוסאי after the entry of Shabbat. Forbidden — active cooking on Shabbat passes through שמא יחתה. Solution: start earlier on Friday so the tavshil is cooked כל צורכו before the entry.
8. Modern practical cases
| Case | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Chamin/cholent on Shabbat plata Friday 5pm | Permitted (cooked כל צורכו before entry) |
| Returning the chamin/cholent Shabbat morning | Permitted if 5 conditions of hazara |
| Oven on Shabbat mode with roast | Permitted (Rama: status of kira) |
| Slow cooker with raw meat before Shabbat | Forbidden — the chai legamre exemption does not apply: the slow cooker is designed to bring the meat to active cooking during Shabbat (= it will pass ben drussai in the middle of the night), so the מסיח דעת criterion falls and שמא יחתה reappears. To distinguish from Seif Alef where raw meat placed late will not be able to cook in the short night. |
| Slow cooker with tavshil cooked כל צורכו | Permitted |
| Pouring water from the מיחם into the chamin/cholent | Forbidden (Seif Daled) |
| Covering the pot with blankets on Shabbat | Forbidden (hatmana) |
| Kettle/urn of hot water for tea | Permitted (essence prepared Friday) |
| Induction plate covered (Shabbat mode) | Generally permitted; check the certification |
| Blech (metal plate between flame and pot) | Permitted — equivalent to gerufa u-ketuma |
9. Final summary table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Subject of the siman | Conditions for leaving/returning the pot on the fire on Shabbat |
| Number of seifim | 5 (Mehaber) — 29 (Admour HaZaken) |
| Talmudic source | Shabbat 36b–38b · משנת כירה · Beitsa 34b |
| Central mahloket | Hananya (ben drussai suffices) vs Hakhamim (כל צורכו) — Rama: minhag lehakel |
| Halakhic concepts | shehiya, hazara, hatmana, שמא יחתה, gerufa u-ketuma, מאכל בן דרוסאי, מצטמק ויפה/רע לו, היסח דעת |
| Modern application | Plata, oven on Shabbat mode, slow cooker, induction, urn, blech |
| Chabad practice | Follows Rama + Admour HaZaken — minhag lehakel, plata = gerufa u-ketuma, תנורים שלנו = kira |
10. The 5 practical commandments of Siman רנ״ג
For daily conduct
- Cook completely on Friday — reach at least מאכל בן דרוסאי before entry (Chabad/Rama); better כל צורכו (יוצא ידי כל הדעות).
- Plata = gerufa u-ketuma — non-adjustable, with no accessible organ. Prefer Shabbat-certified models.
- Hazara: 5 conditions — gerufa + rotech (hot) + in hand + intention + on the kira (not inside).
- No liquid poured on Shabbat into the hot tavshil (Seif Daled); no active cooking.
- No burying on Shabbat — blankets, pillows, isothermal pot: hatmana forbidden.
