📑 Outline of the synthesis
1. The central axiom
Hatmana: to wrap, never to add heat — and always for the mitzvah of the chamim.
Siman רנ״ז codifies the 3rd question of the Shabbat cooking triptych (simanim 253-254-257): wrapping. The rule is built on two crossed axes: when (Shabbat / twilight / Friday) and with what (mosif hevel which adds / she-eino mosif hevel which preserves). The halakhic structure is binary; but the purpose is existential — according to the Rama, eating chamim on Shabbat is a mitzvah, refusal indicates epikoros. The correct hatmana allows the Shabbat table to retain its festive dimension.

The correct hatmana allows the Shabbat table to retain its festive dimension.
2. The central dichotomy (mosif hevel vs she-eino mosif hevel)
mosif hevel — Adds heat
- Criterion: material that generates its own heat (fermentation, reaction, accumulation)
- Examples: olive pulp, manure, salt, lime, sand, straw, grape marc
- Rule: forbidden for hatmana even on Friday; sanction if transgressed
she-eino mosif hevel — Preserves only
- Criterion: passive material (insulator)
- Examples: garment, fruit, feathers, tow, sawdust
- Rule: permitted Friday for hatmana; forbidden Shabbat (except cases of Seif Daled / Hé / Vav)
Watch out for Seif Het: a she-eino mosif hevel material becomes equivalent to mosif hevel if placed on a kedeirah with a heat source below. Cover on kedeirah + plata = hatmana with mosif = forbidden.
3. Hierarchy of cases
| Level | Type | Permitted? |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — clearly permitted | Friday: classical lid on pot (shemira) | ✓ |
| 2 — permitted | Friday: wrap in towel / duvet / aluminum | ✓ |
| 3 — permitted | Twilight: wrap in she-eino mosif hevel | ✓ |
| 4 — permitted | Shabbat: cover/add/substitute (Seif Daled) | ✓ if tabchil cooked |
| 5 — permitted | Shabbat: transfer then wrap with towel (Seif Hé) | ✓ |
| 6 — permitted | Shabbat: wrap a cold object in towel (Seif Vav) | ✓ |
| 7 — forbidden | Shabbat: new hatmana even with she-eino mosif | ✗ |
| 8 — forbidden (sanction) | Friday: hatmana with mosif hevel | ✗ + tabchil forbidden (except exceptions) |
| 9 — forbidden (Seif Het) | Cover touching pot + plata below | ✗ |
4. Mnemonic — M-A-T
M — Moussif Hevel (mosif hevel): material that adds heat (manure, salt, sand, straw). Always forbidden for hatmana.
A — Aino moussif (she-eino mosif hevel): passive material (garment, feathers, aluminum). Permitted Friday, forbidden Shabbat (except exceptions).
T — Tcholent (chamim): the central mitzvah. Eating hot on Shabbat = honor of Shabbat. Refusal = sign of epikoros (Rama).
To memorize: "M-A-T for siman 257: Moussif forbidden, Aino permitted Friday, Tcholent is the mitzvah."
5. Decision tree
Question 1: Do you want to wrap or simply protect (classical lid)?
↓
If protect → shemira — permitted whenever
↓
Question 2: With which material?
↓
If mosif hevel (salt, straw, sand, electric) → ALWAYS FORBIDDEN
↓
If she-eino mosif hevel (towel, aluminum, feathers, duvet) → continue
↓
Question 3: When?
↓
If Friday / twilight → permitted
↓
If Shabbat itself → only Seifim 4-5-6 (cover/transfer/cold); otherwise forbidden
↓
Question 4: Is there a heat source BELOW the pot?
↓
If yes → the cover must not touch the pot (Seif Het)
↓
✓ Successful hatmana → mitzvah of the chamim fulfilled!
6. Mehaber vs Rama
| Topic | Mehaber | Rama |
|---|---|---|
| Shogeg with mosif hevel (Seif Alef) | Tabchil forbidden (rigor) | Permitted bediavad (Mordechai) |
| For morning (not the night) | — | Permitted lechatchila (Shibolei Haleket); not common practice |
| Feathers (Seif Guimel) | Pigeons only | All feathers |
| Rocks | — | Permitted (rare; Tossafot/Mordechai) |
| Bediavad status for kol tzorkhah (Seif Zayin) | Strict | "וכן עיקר" rigor; local minhag to be lenient possible |
| Tannur tach betit (Seif Het) | — | "שרי לכולי עלמא" — universal |
| Mitzvah of the chamim | — | "מצוה להטמין לשבת" — strong declaration |
| Refusal of chamim | — | "חוששים שמא אפיקורס הוא" |
7. 5 pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1: Wrapping a blanket around the Crock-Pot to preserve heat. Forbidden — the Crock's heat + the insulator = hatmana with mosif hevel. Leave the Crock-Pot uncovered.
Pitfall 2: Covering the pot on the plata with a thick blanket that touches the pot. Forbidden (Seif Het) — the heat of the plata transforms the blanket into mosif hevel. Solution: interpose a large object (inverted dish, blech).
Pitfall 3: Thinking that hatmana is forbidden outright. False — it is a mitzvah according to the Rama. Friday with she-eino mosif hevel = perfectly permitted and even recommended.
Pitfall 4: Forgetting to wrap on Friday, and wanting to do it on Shabbat. Forbidden — hatmana on Shabbat is forbidden (gezera). Solutions: cover if already partially wrapped (Seif Daled), transfer then wrap (Seif Hé).
Pitfall 5: Using an electric heating pad to preserve heat. Forbidden even Friday — it is the modern equivalent of mosif hevel. Use a classical plata (= diffuse heat, status of sim. 253).
8. Modern practical cases
| Case | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Tcholent in Crock-Pot Friday (without cover around) | Permitted (sim. 253) — no hatmana |
| Blanket around the Crock-Pot | Forbidden (hatmana with mosif) |
| Double-walled isothermal pot, closed Friday | Permitted (she-eino mosif, Friday) |
| Aluminum as lid on pot | Permitted (shemira or hatmana she-eino mosif Friday) |
| Thick blanket on pot + plata, touching | Forbidden (Seif Het) |
| Blanket separated by inverted dish/blech | Permitted (no hatmana) |
| Electric heating pad | Forbidden even Friday (mosif hevel) |
| Transferring tcholent on Shabbat then wrapping with towel | Permitted (Seif Hé) |
| Covering on Shabbat what became uncovered (Friday) | Permitted (Seif Daled) |
| Cold water bottle in a towel on Shabbat | Permitted (Seif Vav) |
| Cold water bottle in sand | Forbidden even Friday (Seif Vav) |
| Refusal to eat chamim on Shabbat | Marker of epikoros (Rama Seif Het) |
| Tcholent at table in deep dish + towel | Permitted (Seif Hé — transfer) |
9. Final summary table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Topic of the siman | Wrapping hot dishes (hatmana) before and during Shabbat |

| Talmudic source | Shabbat 47b–51a · Mishna "במה טומנין" |
| Central dichotomy | mosif hevel (always forbidden) / she-eino mosif hevel (permitted Friday) |
| Temporal regimes | Shabbat (new hatmana forbidden) / Twilight (she-eino mosif permitted) / Friday (she-eino mosif permitted) |
| Halakhic concepts | hatmana / shemira / shehiya, mosif hevel, mitzvah of chamim, anti-Karaism |
| Modern application | Crock-Pot, isothermal pot, aluminum, blankets, heating pad, blech |
| Rama's affirmation | "מצוה להטמין לשבת ... חוששים שמא אפיקורס" |
| Chabad practice | Traditional tcholent + plata + aluminum as lid; no blanket on heated pot |
10. The 5 practical commandments of Siman רנ״ז
For daily conduct
- Distinguish mosif hevel / she-eino mosif hevel — straw/salt/sand = add; towel/aluminum/duvet = preserve. Never mosif hevel in hatmana.
- Friday = wrapping with she-eino mosif hevel permitted (and recommended). Shabbat = no new hatmana (except Seifim 4-5-6).
- Blankets on pot + plata = major pitfall. If they touch the pot, it is hatmana with mosif. Solution: interpose an object or avoid.
- Lid / aluminum = shemira (protection) as long as the intention is not purely thermal. Permitted even on Shabbat.
- Mitzvah of the chamim on Shabbat — it is the halakhic identity of the Jewish people (anti-Karaism). Making tcholent / chamim = honoring Shabbat.
