1. The central axiom
The woman lights the Shabbos light — and enters Shabbos together with it.
Siman רס״ג codifies the central mitzvah of the Jewish home. Three axes: (1) Universal mitzvah (men and women obligated, even paupers), with feminine priority; (2) Technical act (2 wicks Zakhor/Shamor, brachah with covered eyes, position of the candles); (3) Acceptance — cardinal חידוש of the Bahag: the lighting is in itself a halachic acceptance of Shabbos. The woman enters Shabbos at the moment she recites the brachah. This unique synthesis between the physical (the flame) and the spiritual (entering kedushah) makes siman 263 the central pivot of Hilchos Shabbos.

2. The 3 axes of the siman
Axis A — Universal mitzvah (Se'ifim 1-3)
- Beautiful candle; 2 wicks Zakhor/Shamor; 3-4 OK (Rema)
- Men and women obligated; even a pauper begs to obtain oil
- Women take priority; Shabbos candle before Chanukah candle (shalom bayis)
Axis B — Technical act (Se'ifim 4-9)
- Not too early, not too late (unless one accepts Shabbos early ≥ פלג המנחה)
- Brachah + minhag of covered eyes
- Yeshivah bachur: lights + blesses in his room
- Guest: פרוטה to join in
- Several baalei batim: each one blesses
- Candles too short (extinguish before nightfall) = ברכה לבטלה
Axis C — Acceptance (Se'ifim 10-17)
- Bahag's חידוש: lighting = acceptance for the woman who lights
- Conditioning "in the heart" possible (Mordechai)
- Rest of the household: free until Barekhu (Rema)
- Tefillas Maariv early = acceptance
- Traveler in a town that has already accepted = dragged along
- Cloudy-day error: community need not re-daven; individual must re-daven
- Possibility of asking another Jew (who has not accepted) to do a melakha
3. Hierarchy of cases
| Level | Type | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — ideal | Woman at home + 2-4 candles + brachah with covered eyes + Mizmor | Standard practice |
| 2 — minhag | Girls from age 3 (Chabad) + 1 candle per child | Chassidic custom |
| 3 — student/traveler | Lighting in dedicated room + brachah | Mechaber Se'if Vav |
| 4 — guest without room | פרוטה to join the household candles | Mechaber Se'if Zayin |
| 5 — extreme pauper | Beg at doorways to obtain oil | Mechaber Se'if Beis |
| 6 — conditional exception | Woman who wants to continue after lighting | תנאי בלב — exceptional |
| 7 — penitential reminder | Woman who once forgot — 3 candles for life | Maharil/Rema |
4. Mnemonic — N-B-Q
N — Nér (נֵר): the candle. 2 wicks minimum (Zakhor/Shamor); 3 if previously forgotten; +1 per child in Chabad. Woman has priority.
B — Brachah (בְּרָכָה): minhag of covered eyes — light → cover → bless → uncover → look.
Q — Qabbalah (קַבָּלַת שַׁבָּת): the lighting = acceptance for the woman (Bahag). תנאי בלב possible.
To memorize: "N-B-Q for siman 263: Nér 2 wicks minimum, Brachah with covered eyes, Qabbalah through lighting."
5. Decision tree
Step 1: Prepare 2 candles (3 if previously forgotten, +1 per child in Chabad)
↓
Step 2: Light 18 minutes before sunset (cf. siman רס״א)
↓
Step 3: Cover the eyes with the hands
↓
Step 4: Bless: "Baruch atah Hashem... lehadlik nér shel Shabbos (kodesh)"
↓
Step 5: Remove the hands, look at the light
↓
Step 6: Recite "Mizmor shir leyom haShabbos" (verbal acceptance)
↓
✓ Woman has entered Shabbos — no more melakha
↓
Special case: prior "in-the-heart" conditioning if there is a mundane act to finish
6. Mechaber vs. Rema
| Topic | Mechaber | Rema |
|---|---|---|
| Number of candles | 1 minimum; 2 wicks recommended | + 3-4 OK; +1 per child; 3 for life if forgotten |
| Brachah before or after | Machlokes — no pesak | + Maharil's minhag of covered eyes (received practice) |
| Acceptance through lighting (Se'if Yod) | Machlokes — Bahag vs. Ran | + Practice: woman accepts; conditioning valid; rest of household free until Barekhu |
| Several baalei batim in same place | Machlokes — avoid for caution | + "אבל אנו אין נוהגין כן" — each blesses separately |
| Position of the candles | Not explicit | + "להניח הנרות במקום שמדליקין" — do not light then move |
7. 5 pitfalls to avoid
Pitfall 1: Lighting then wanting to continue a mundane act (text, close the fridge). Forbidden according to the Rema (acceptance through lighting). Solution: mentally condition before lighting (rare).
Pitfall 2: Lighting in the living room but eating in the dining room. Risk of ברכה לבטלה if the candles are short (extinguish before nightfall). Either use long candles, or light where one eats.
Pitfall 3: Lighting and then moving the candles to the table. Wrong according to the Rema — the lighting must be done where the candles will remain. Final position before lighting.
Pitfall 4: Yeshivah student who thinks his parents light for him at home. Wrong — he must light + bless in his own room.
Pitfall 5: Poverty preventing one from obtaining candles → skip the mitzvah. Wrong — the Mechaber orders one to beg at doorways to obtain oil. The mitzvah is universal, with no excuse of poverty.
8. Modern practical cases
| Case | Conduct |
|---|---|
| Woman at home | 2 candles, brachah with covered eyes, accepts Shabbos through lighting |
| Chabad girls ≥ 3 years | 1 candle each with brachah |
| Yeshivah student | Lights + blesses in his room |
| Married man, wife at home | Wife blesses for the household |
| Traveler in hotel with room | Lights + blesses in the room |
| Traveler without dedicated room | פרוטה to join in |
| Pauper without candles | Beg at doorways for oil |
| Woman wants to finish a mundane act after lighting | תנאי בלב before lighting (exceptional) |
| Woman forgot to light once | 3 candles for life (Maharil) |
| LED candles | Machlokes — prefer flame candle if possible |
| Several women in same place | Each blesses separately (Rema) |
| Candles too short | ברכה לבטלה — use long candles |
9. Final synthesis table
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Topic of the siman | The central mitzvah of lighting the Shabbos candles |
| Number of se'ifim | 17 (Mechaber) — 25 + 8 KA (Alter Rebbe) |
| Talmudic source | Shabbos 23b–25b · Mishnah and discussion on who/how |
| Halachic concepts | נר שבת, פתילות זכור/שמור, ברכה ועובר לעשייתן, קבלת שבת בהדלקה (Bahag), תנאי בלב, אורח, יום המעונן |
| Modern application | Women at home, Chabad girls, students, travelers, LED, conditioning |
| Rema's position | Maharil's minhag of covered eyes; woman accepts through lighting; rest of household free until Barekhu |
| Chabad practice | Girls from age 3, +1 per child, brachah "lehadlik nér shel Shabbos kodesh" |
