1. The central axiom

The woman lights the Shabbos light — and enters Shabbos together with it.
Siman רס״ג codifies the central mitzvah of the Jewish home. Three axes: (1) Universal mitzvah (men and women obligated, even paupers), with feminine priority; (2) Technical act (2 wicks Zakhor/Shamor, brachah with covered eyes, position of the candles); (3) Acceptance — cardinal חידוש of the Bahag: the lighting is in itself a halachic acceptance of Shabbos. The woman enters Shabbos at the moment she recites the brachah. This unique synthesis between the physical (the flame) and the spiritual (entering kedushah) makes siman 263 the central pivot of Hilchos Shabbos.

2. The 3 axes of the siman

Axis A — Universal mitzvah (Se'ifim 1-3)

Axis B — Technical act (Se'ifim 4-9)

Axis C — Acceptance (Se'ifim 10-17)

3. Hierarchy of cases

LevelTypeStatus
1 — idealWoman at home + 2-4 candles + brachah with covered eyes + MizmorStandard practice
2 — minhagGirls from age 3 (Chabad) + 1 candle per childChassidic custom
3 — student/travelerLighting in dedicated room + brachahMechaber Se'if Vav
4 — guest without roomפרוטה to join the household candlesMechaber Se'if Zayin
5 — extreme pauperBeg at doorways to obtain oilMechaber Se'if Beis
6 — conditional exceptionWoman who wants to continue after lightingתנאי בלב — exceptional
7 — penitential reminderWoman who once forgot — 3 candles for lifeMaharil/Rema

4. Mnemonic — N-B-Q

NNér (נֵר): the candle. 2 wicks minimum (Zakhor/Shamor); 3 if previously forgotten; +1 per child in Chabad. Woman has priority.

BBrachah (בְּרָכָה): minhag of covered eyes — light → cover → bless → uncover → look.

QQabbalah (קַבָּלַת שַׁבָּת): the lighting = acceptance for the woman (Bahag). תנאי בלב possible.

To memorize: "N-B-Q for siman 263: Nér 2 wicks minimum, Brachah with covered eyes, Qabbalah through lighting."

5. Decision tree

Step 1: Prepare 2 candles (3 if previously forgotten, +1 per child in Chabad)
Step 2: Light 18 minutes before sunset (cf. siman רס״א)
Step 3: Cover the eyes with the hands
Step 4: Bless: "Baruch atah Hashem... lehadlik nér shel Shabbos (kodesh)"
Step 5: Remove the hands, look at the light
Step 6: Recite "Mizmor shir leyom haShabbos" (verbal acceptance)
✓ Woman has entered Shabbos — no more melakha
Special case: prior "in-the-heart" conditioning if there is a mundane act to finish

6. Mechaber vs. Rema

TopicMechaberRema
Number of candles1 minimum; 2 wicks recommended+ 3-4 OK; +1 per child; 3 for life if forgotten
Brachah before or afterMachlokes — no pesak+ Maharil's minhag of covered eyes (received practice)
Acceptance through lighting (Se'if Yod)Machlokes — Bahag vs. Ran+ Practice: woman accepts; conditioning valid; rest of household free until Barekhu
Several baalei batim in same placeMachlokes — avoid for caution+ "אבל אנו אין נוהגין כן" — each blesses separately
Position of the candlesNot explicit+ "להניח הנרות במקום שמדליקין" — do not light then move

7. 5 pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1: Lighting then wanting to continue a mundane act (text, close the fridge). Forbidden according to the Rema (acceptance through lighting). Solution: mentally condition before lighting (rare).
Pitfall 2: Lighting in the living room but eating in the dining room. Risk of ברכה לבטלה if the candles are short (extinguish before nightfall). Either use long candles, or light where one eats.
Pitfall 3: Lighting and then moving the candles to the table. Wrong according to the Rema — the lighting must be done where the candles will remain. Final position before lighting.
Pitfall 4: Yeshivah student who thinks his parents light for him at home. Wrong — he must light + bless in his own room.
Pitfall 5: Poverty preventing one from obtaining candles → skip the mitzvah. Wrong — the Mechaber orders one to beg at doorways to obtain oil. The mitzvah is universal, with no excuse of poverty.

8. Modern practical cases
