1. The central axiom

A steady flame, a fire that catches, an oil that lets itself be drawn.
Siman רס״ד codifies the materials of the mitzvah set in siman 263. Two interlocking technical criteria: (1) the wick must be of a material that holds the fire (no "שלהבת קופצת"); (2) the oil must be "drawn" by the wick (capillarity). Four risks (חששות) to avoid: jumping flame, undrawn oil, bad smell (one steps away), sweet smell (one takes). Absolute ideal: olive oil — Mikdash link, perfect capillarity, symbol of Yisrael. Modern application: paraffin is permitted (Seif Zayin — wax wrapped around a permitted wick); LED remains in machlokes.

2. The 2 criteria (wick + oil)

Wick (peitilah)

Oil (shemen)

3. Hierarchy of cases

LevelTypeStatus
1 — idealOlive oil with floating cotton wickMitzvah min ha-muvchar
2 — modern standardParaffin candles (cotton wick + wrapped wax)Permitted (Seif Zayin)
3 — other oilsSesame, sunflower, canola, etc. with permitted wickPermitted
4 — bediavadLED candle (no flame)Machlokes — prefer flame
5 — forbiddenWool or hair wickשלהבת קופצת
6 — forbiddenWax/pitch/tallow as direct fuel (without core wick)אינו נמשך
7 — forbiddenHeavily scented candlesRisk of mechabeh (Seif Gimel)

4. Mnemonic — P-S-Z

PPeitilah (פתילה): wick of flax/cotton/hemp. No wool, hair, rags.

SShemen (שמן): oil "drawable" by the wick. No direct wax/pitch/tallow; no extreme smell.

ZZayis (זית = olive): mitzvah min ha-muvchar. Mikdash link, perfect capillarity, symbol of Yisrael.

To memorize: "P-S-Z for siman 264: Peitilah that holds, Shemen that is drawn, Zayis that recalls the Mikdash."

5. Decision tree

Question 1: Is the wick of a permitted material?
Flax/cotton/hemp → permitted. Wool/hair → forbidden (שלהבת קופצת)
Question 2: Is the fuel a "drawable" oil or wrapped wax?
Drawable oil (olive, etc.) or wax wrapped around a permitted wick → permitted
Wax/pitch/tallow without a permitted wick → forbidden (אינו נמשך)
Question 3: Is there an extreme smell?
Very bad smell → one steps away; very sweet smell → one takes → forbidden
Question 4: Do we want the ideal?
Olive oil with floating wick = mitzvah min ha-muvchar
✓ Permitted candle

6. Mechaber vs Rama

TopicMechaberRama
Forbidden wick (Seif Alef)Forbidden to use its light+ bediavad: with another kosher light OK; for Shabbos need OK
Salt/bean atop the candle (Seif Beis)+ trick to burn better (Friday)
Hav'havah (Seif Tes)Not obligatory+ minhag to light-extinguish the new wick

7. 5 pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1: Using a candle with a wool or hair wick. Forbidden — שלהבת קופצת. Always cotton/flax/hemp wick.
Pitfall 2: Burning wax/paraffin directly without a permitted wick at the center. Forbidden — אינו נמשך. The wax must be wrapped around a cotton wick.
Pitfall 3: Using intensely scented candles. Risk — Seif Gimel (indirect mechabeh). Prefer dedicated candles.
Pitfall 4: Mixing a little olive oil into a forbidden oil. Forbidden (Seif Daled) — no shortcut.
Pitfall 5: Treating LED as fully equivalent to a flame. Machlokes — majority of poskim reject. Prefer real flame; LED only in urgent cases (hospital, travel).

8. Modern practical cases

CaseConduct
Standard paraffin candlesPermitted (Seif Zayin)
Olive oil candles with floating wickMitzvah min ha-muvchar — ideal
Beeswax candles (cotton wick)Permitted
LED candlesMachlokes — prefer flame
Heavily scented candlesTo avoid (risk of mechabeh)
Unprepared new wickHav'havah recommended
Candles with wool/hair wickForbidden (שלהבת קופצת)
Salt/bean on candle for better burnPermitted (Rama, Friday)
Travel, hotel without permitted flameLED bediavad per Rav Feinstein
Hospital forbidding flameLED with or without brachah per poskim

10. The 5 practical commandments of Siman רס״ד

For daily conduct

  1. Permitted wick — cotton, flax, or hemp. No wool, hair, worn rags.
  2. Permitted oil — all "drawable" oils; avoid direct soft wax, tallow, petroleum, balsam.
  3. Olive oil ideal — mitzvah min ha-muvchar (Mikdash link, perfect capillarity, symbolism).
  4. Modern paraffin candles = permitted (Seif Zayin) — wax around cotton wick.
  5. Hav'havah — prepare the new wick before Shabbos (light, extinguish).
