תַּשְׁמִישׁ הַמִּטָּה מִתַּעֲנוּגֵי שַׁבָּת הוּא. לְפִיכָךְ עוֹנַת תַּלְמִידֵי חֲכָמִים הַבְּרִיאִים, שֶׁהִיא פַּעַם אַחַת בְּשָׁבוּעַ, קְבָעוּהָ מִלֵּיל שַׁבָּת לְלֵיל שַׁבָּת, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִּתְבָּאֵר בְּסִמָּן ר"מ:

Law of marital relations (tashmish hamita) — and it contains 3 seifim:

Marital relations are among the delights (ta'anugos) of Shabbos. Therefore, the onah (conjugal obligation) of healthy talmidei chachamim, which is once a week, was fixed from one Friday night to the next (mi-leil Shabbos le-leil Shabbos), as was explained in siman 240:

סעיף ב מִתַּקָּנַת עֶזְרָא לֶאֱכוֹל שׁוּם אוֹ שְׁאָר דְּבָרִים הַמַּרְבִּים זֶרַע בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת אוֹ בְּלֵיל…

מִתַּקָּנַת עֶזְרָא לֶאֱכוֹל שׁוּם אוֹ שְׁאָר דְּבָרִים הַמַּרְבִּים זֶרַע בְּעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת אוֹ בְּלֵיל שַׁבָּת, בִּשְׁבִיל קִיּוּם הָעוֹנָה.

וְצָרִיךְ לִזָּהֵר שֶׁלֹּא לְבַטֵּל הָעוֹנָה, שֶׁלֹּא יַעֲבוֹר עַל לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה שֶׁל תּוֹרָה אֶלָּא אִם כֵּן הָאִשָּׁה מוֹחֶלֶת. וְאַף עַל פִּי כֵן טוֹב לְקַיְּמָהּ, כְּמוֹ שֶׁנִּתְבָּאֵר שָׁם:

It is from the enactment of Ezra (takanas Ezra) to eat garlic or other foods that increase seed (marbim zera) on erev Shabbos or on the night of Shabbos, for the sake of fulfilling the onah.

And one must take care not to neglect the onah, so as not to transgress a negative commandment (lo sa'aseh) of the Torah, unless the wife waives it (mochelet). And even then, it is good to fulfill it, as was explained there:

סעיף ג מֻתָּר לִבְעוֹל בְּתוּלָה לְכַתְּחִלָּה בְּשַׁבָּת, וְאֵין בָּזֶה אִסּוּר מִשּׁוּם הַצַּעַר שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהּ…

מֻתָּר לִבְעוֹל בְּתוּלָה לְכַתְּחִלָּה בְּשַׁבָּת, וְאֵין בָּזֶה אִסּוּר מִשּׁוּם הַצַּעַר שֶׁיֵּשׁ לָהּ בְּשַׁבָּת בִּבְעִילָה רִאשׁוֹנָה.

וְגַם אֵין אִסּוּר מִשּׁוּם חוֹבֵל בְּמַה שֶּׁמּוֹצִיא דָם, לְפִי שֶׁדַּם הַבְּתוּלִים אֵינוֹ מֻבְלָע בְּכָתְלֵי בֵּית הָרֶחֶם, אֶלָּא כָּנוּס הוּא שָׁם כְּמֻפְקָד וּמֻצְנָע בְּתוֹךְ הַכְּלִי, וְזֶה אֵינוֹ אֶלָּא כְּפוֹתֵחַ הַכְּלִי שֶׁיֵּצֵא הַדָּם מִתּוֹכוֹ.

וְגַם אֵין אִסּוּר בְּמַה שֶּׁעָשָׂה פֶּתַח בְּגוּף הָאִשָּׁה, לְפִי שֶׁהִיא מְלָאכָה שֶׁאֵינָהּ צְרִיכָה לְגוּפָהּ, שֶׁאֵין צָרִיךְ לְפֶתַח זֶה כְּלָל שֶׁיְּהֵא פָּתוּחַ, לְפִי שֶׁהַבְּתוּלָה נוֹחָה לוֹ יוֹתֵר.

וְאַף לְהָאוֹמְרִים שֶׁמְּלָאכָה שֶׁאֵינָהּ צְרִיכָה לְגוּפָהּ חַיָּב עָלֶיהָ, מִכָּל מָקוֹם זֶה מְקַלְקֵל הוּא, שֶׁהַבְּתוּלָה חֲשׁוּבָה מִן הַבְּעוּלָה, וְכָל הַמְקַלְקְלִים פְּטוּרִים.

וְאַף שֶׁלְּכַתְּחִלָּה אָסוּר מִדִּבְרֵי סוֹפְרִים אַף אִם הִיא מְלָאכָה שֶׁאֵינָהּ צְרִיכָה לְגוּפָהּ וּמְקַלְקֵל, מִכָּל מָקוֹם בִּמְקוֹם מִצְוָה לֹא גָזְרוּ חֲכָמִים.

וְעוֹד, שֶׁאִסּוּר לִפְתּוֹחַ פֶּתַח הוּא מִשּׁוּם [מְ]תַקֵּן כְּלִי, כְּמוֹ שֶׁיִּתְבָּאֵר בְּסִמָּן שכ"ח, וּכְשֶׁאֵינוֹ צָרִיךְ לְפֶתַח זֶה — אֵין זֶה תִּקּוּן כְּלָל, וְלֹא עָשָׂה כְּלוּם, כְּמוֹ שֶׁיִּתְבָּאֵר שָׁם:

It is permitted to consummate with a virgin (livol besulah) lechatchilah on Shabbos, and there is no prohibition in this on account of the pain she experiences on Shabbos in the first union.

Nor is there a prohibition of chovel (one who wounds) in that he draws out blood, because the blood of virginity (dam habesulim) is not absorbed in the walls of the beis harechem; rather, it is gathered there as a deposit, stored within the vessel, and this is only like opening the vessel so that the blood comes out from within it.

Nor is there a prohibition in that he made an opening (pesach) in the woman's body, because it is a melachah she-einah tzerichah legufah (a melachah not needed for its own sake): for this opening need not be open at all, since the virgin is more agreeable to him.

And even according to those who hold that a melachah she-einah tzerichah legufah is liable, nevertheless here he is in the category of mekalkel (one who damages), since the virgin is more esteemed than the deflowered woman (be'ulah), and all mekalkelim are exempt.

And although lechatchilah it is forbidden by Rabbinic law, even if it is a melachah she-einah tzerichah legufah and mekalkel, nevertheless in a place of mitzvah the Sages did not decree.

Furthermore, the prohibition to open an opening is on account of mesakken keli (perfecting a utensil), as will be explained in siman 328; and when one does not need this opening, it is no tikkun at all, and he has done nothing, as will be explained there:
