5. The chazzan's havdalah — a collective net

The central text of the siman — the very reason for its existence — is the institution by which the chazzan makes public havdalah in shul. But a question immediately arises: why this communal havdalah, when each one is anyway obligated to do havdalah at home on his own cup?

The origin: in the time of the Gemara, not everyone had wine at home. The havdalah said in the beis ha-knesses was motzi the poor and travelers who, without it, would have remained without havdalah at all.
The condition of efficacy: to be yotzei through the chazzan's havdalah is not automatic. One needs the kavanah to be yotzei (principle of "שומע כעונה"), and not to have drunk or eaten before. Without this intention, one has heard — but is not yotzei.
The modern situation: today almost every home has wine. The obligatory havdalah remains thus that of the home; the chazzan's becomes a collective safety net — a supplement, not the "real" havdalah.
The central pitfall: treating the chazzan's havdalah as sufficient and omitting that of the home. It is motzi only one who really has no cup and had kavanah. For all others, the obligation is fulfilled at home, on one's own cup, with family.

This siman thus articulates siman 294 (havdalah in tefillah) and siman 296 (havdalah on wine): the chazzan does not eliminate either — he guarantees that no one in the community leaves Shabbat without havdalah.

7. Pitfalls to avoid

Pitfall 1 — Reciting Vihi noam at a quick pace: contradicts the purpose ("arichus"). One must sing, prolong, delay.
Pitfall 2 — Saying Vihi noam in the week with Pesach/Sukkos: wrong. One says V'yitein lecha.
Pitfall 3 — Being yotzei the chazzan's havdalah without kavanah: does not discharge the obligation. One needs awareness of being yotzei + not having drunk/eaten.
Pitfall 4 — Considering the chazzan's havdalah as the "real" havdalah: today, almost everyone has wine at home — the obligatory havdalah is at home. The chazzan's remains a supplement/net.
Pitfall 5 — Skipping Eliyahu HaNavi on motzaei Shabbat: minhag strongly codified in all communities. Breaking a traditional chain.
