Siman 121 — Kashering vessels bought from a non-Jew (הכשר כלים): cold, הגעלה, ליבון

The manner of use dictates the manner of kashering: הדחה ושפשוף for what was used cold, הגעלה for what was used hot, ליבון for the מחבת; the order of hekhsher and tevila, earthenware, partial kashering and the knife — נעיצה, ליבון, השחזה (Shulchan Aroukh, Yoreh De'ah 121 — 7 seifim)

One who buys old vessels from a non-Jew: as the manner in which the non-Jew used them, so is their kashering. Therefore one who buys old utensils that were used cold — such as cups, צלוחיות and the like — rinses them, and must scour them well in water at the time of rinsing so as to remove and scrape off the issur on their surface; afterwards he washes them in water and immerses them, and they are permitted.

Frequently asked questions — Siman 121

How does one kasher a second-hand vessel bought from a non-Jew?

The master rule is stated in the very first line of the siman (שו״ע יו״ד קכ״א:א): « כדרך שנשתמש בהן העובד כוכבים כך הוא הכשרן » — the non-Jew's manner of use dictates the manner of kashering. A vessel used only cold — cups, צלוחיות and the like — is rinsed, scoured well in water at the time of rinsing so as to remove the issur on its surface, then washed and immersed. The Rama restates the same rule in seif ו in its classic form: « כבולעו כך פולטו ». For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.

הגעלה or ליבון — what decides?

The channel of absorption, and nothing else. A metal, wood or stone vessel used hot is kashered by הגעלה, and then immersed if it is metal (שו״ע יו״ד קכ״א:ב). But the frying pan — the מחבת — absorbed at dry fire: « לענין שאר איסורים צריכה ליבון » (שו״ע יו״ד קכ״א:ד). הגעלה suffices for it only for Pesach hametz, where the absorption occurred while the substance was still permitted — « כיון דהיתרא קא בלע » (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ג; ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ח). And if one only scalded a vessel that required ליבון, hot use remains forbidden even off the fire (שו״ע יו״ד קכ״א:ה), and the Taz rules: « אפילו דיעבד אסור וזה פשוט » (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה). For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.

Should one kasher before or after the tevila?

The order of the Shulchan Aroukh is: one scalds, then immerses if the vessel is metal (שו״ע יו״ד קכ״א:ב). If he immersed first: « ואם הטבילן ואחר כך הגעילן מותרים »; but a yesh omrim adds « ויש אומרים שצריך לחזור ולהטבילן », since immersing a vessel that still holds issur is « דה״ל כטובל ושרץ בידו » (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ד; ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק א). The Shach concludes: « ונראה דיש לחזור ולהטבילן בלא ברכה » (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ה). He also notes there that « דוקא כלי מתכת צריך טבילה » (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק ב), and the Taz explains that « דאין הטבילה צורך ההגעלה אלא שיצא בטבילה מטומאה לטהרה » (ט״ז יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק א). For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.

A vessel used only cold — does a simple rinsing suffice?

It depends on the use intended. The Rama (שו״ע יו״ד קכ״א:ה) permits cold use even לכתחילה through הדחה ושפשוף היטב — but only דרך עראי, as in the non-Jew's house, or בדיעבד. For permanent use, « יש מחמירים ואומרים דאפילו להשתמש בו צונן צריך הגעלה או ליבון », lest one come to use it hot, and he concludes « והכי נוהגין ». He even extends the custom to silver vessels in which wine may have been warmed, and to chests and tables bought from non-Jews — לכתחילה only. For earthenware used only cold, however, since הגעלה is impossible it is deemed בדיעבד, and a careful מריקה ושטיפה suffices. For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.

A knife bought from a non-Jew — נעיצה, ליבון or השחזה?

According to seif ז: for cold use, if the blade has no גומות, « נועצה עשרה פעמים בקרקע קשה » — each thrust into hard ground, and never where he has already thrust: « לפיכך לא ינעוץ במקום שנעץ נעיצה אחרת ». That suffices even to cut a sharp food such as a radish. If the blade has גומות, or he wishes to cut hot with it, or to slaughter with it: ליבון, or השחזה on a smiths' whetstone over its whole surface. The Rama narrows this: « וי״א דהשחזה מהני רק לחתוך בה צונן אבל לא לענין חמין », and « והכי נהוג לכתחלה »; the Shach nevertheless permits בדיעבד a hot use after a thorough השחזה, even if the knife is בן יומו (ש״ך יו״ד קכ״א ס״ק כ). For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
