This siman teaches the bows at the end of the Amida: one steps back three paces (ג׳ פסיעות) in a single bow ; while still bowing, one says «עושה שלום במרומיו» turning the face left, then «הוא יעשה שלום עלינו» right, and bows forward כעבד הנפטר מרבו ; one does not return to his place before the ש״ץ reaches the קדושה ; the measure of the steps and the excess (יוהרא). Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ו׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Our Sages taught (יומא נ״ג:): המתפלל צריך שיפסע ג׳ פסיעות לאחוריו ואחר כך יתן שלום — one who prays should step back three paces and then give the shalom, in the manner of one taking leave from before the King. The siman deals with the departure from the Amida (הכריעות בסיום התפילה): how one steps back and bows, when one may return, the measure of the steps, and the conduct of the ש״ץ. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. The bows at the end of the Amida — the ו׳ seifim
הַכְּרִיעוֹת בְּסִיּוּם הַתְּפִלָּה — the bows at the end of the Amida — one who finishes the Amida steps back three paces (ג׳ פסיעות) and gives the shalom, כעבד הנפטר מרבו — like a servant taking leave of his master. The siman specifies how to step back and bow (left then right), when to return to one's place (not before the קדושה), the measure of the steps (without excess, else יוהרא), and the conduct of the שליח צבור at the silent Amida as at the repetition.
Séif 1 — ג׳ פסיעות ועושה שלום: stepping back and bowing
Séif 1: one bows and steps back three paces (ג׳ פסיעות) in a single bow. After stepping back three paces, while still bowing, before straightening: when he says «עושה שלום במרומיו» he turns the face to the left (לצד שמאלו), and when he says «הוא יעשה שלום עלינו» he turns it to the right (לצד ימינו) ; then he bows forward like a servant taking leave of his master (כעבד הנפטר מרבו).
The order is precise: one first steps back the three paces, then — still bowing, before straightening — says the «עושה שלום», the face to the left, then to the right. Finally one bows forward: thus one takes leave כעבד הנפטר מרבו, like a servant before his master. The Rama adds the custom to say afterward «יהי רצון שיבנה בית המקדש», for the תפלה stands in place of the עבודה.
Séif 2 — לא יחזור למקומו: not returning too early
Séif 2: where the three steps end he stands, and he does not return to his place until the שליח צבור reaches the קדושה, or at least until he begins to pray aloud (בקול רם). Likewise one who prays alone (יחיד) stands where his steps end according to this measure before returning to his place.
One does not return at once: standing where the steps end shows that one has truly taken leave. Ideally, one waits until the ש״ץ reaches the קדושה; failing that, at least until he begins the חזרה aloud. One who prays alone also observes a wait (כשיעור הליכת ד׳ אמות per the Rama) before returning.
Séif 3 — אופן ושיעור הפסיעות: the manner and the measure
Séif 3: when he steps back he first lifts the left foot (עוקר רגל שמאל תחלה) ; the measure of these steps is at the least placing the big toe at the level of the heel (גודל בצד עקב), and לכתחלה he does not take steps wider than that (פסיעות גסות).
One begins with the left foot — the one usually least advanced — to show that it is heavy to take leave before the Master. The minimal measure of a step: the big toe at the level of the heel; and לכתחלה no wide steps (פסיעות גסות). A left-handed person reverses per the Poskim; one follows one's Rav.
Séif 4 — המוסיף על ג׳: more than three steps
Séif 4: one who adds beyond three steps — it is arrogance (הוי יוהרא).
Three steps suffice and that is the measure. To add more is not piety: it is יוהרא, a pretension, as if showing that one honors the Chekhina more than others. The right conduct is the exact measure, neither less nor more.
Séif 5 — הש״ץ בלחש: the chazan and the steps
Séif 5: the שליח צבור too must step back three paces when he prays the silent Amida (בלחש) ; but when he repeats the Amida aloud (בקול רם) he need not step back again. And if he did not pray silently but only aloud, he steps back three paces after that aloud Amida.
The ש״ץ steps back like everyone at the silent Amida. At the repetition (חזרה), he need not step back again — he relies on the steps at the end of the קדיש. But if he prayed only aloud (without לחש), he steps back after that Amida.
Séif 6: when the שליח צבור repeats the Amida, he too says «ה׳ שפתי תפתח» (at the start), but he does not say «יהיו לרצון» at the end of the Amida.
At the חזרה, the ש״ץ does say «ה׳ שפתי תפתח» before beginning, as in every Amida. But he does not say «יהיו לרצון» at the end, for he relies on the «תתקבל» of the קדיש. Thus the start and the end of the repetition follow a conduct particular to the ש״ץ.
The siman in one sentence: at the end of the Amida one steps back three paces (ג׳ פסיעות) in a bow, then — still bowing — says «עושה שלום» to the left and «הוא יעשה שלום» to the right, כעבד הנפטר מרבו ; one does not return to his place before the קדושה (or at least the start of the חזרה) ; one begins with the left foot, without פסיעות גסות, and המוסיף הוי יוהרא ; the ש״ץ steps back at the לחש but not at the חזרה, where he says «ה׳ שפתי» but not «יהיו לרצון».
Practical cases
Case 1 — Stepping back and bowing at the end of the Amida
Situation: he finishes the last blessing of the Amida. How does he step back and bow?
Conduct: he bows and steps back three paces in a single bow ; still bowing, before straightening, he says «עושה שלום במרומיו» the face to the left, then «הוא יעשה שלום עלינו» to the right, and finally bows forward כעבד הנפטר מרבו. For the exact practice, one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — Not returning too early
Situation: he has finished stepping back, but the ש״ץ has not yet begun the repetition. May he return to his place?
Conduct: he stands where his steps ended and does not return until the ש״ץ reaches the קדושה ; failing that, at least until he begins the חזרה aloud. One who prays alone also waits For cases of crowding in the synagogue, one follows one's Rav.
Case 3 — The ש״ץ and the steps
Situation: must the שליח צבור step back three paces at the silent Amida, and again at the repetition?
Conduct: the ש״ץ steps back three paces like everyone at the silent Amida ; at the repetition, he need not step back again. He says «ה׳ שפתי תפתח» at the start of the חזרה but does not say «יהיו לרצון» at its end. For the details, one follows one's Rav.
Comprehension questions
Check your understanding:
- How many paces does one step back, and in what order does one say the «עושה שלום» (séif 1)?
- What does it mean to bow כעבד הנפטר מרבו, and why does one not return to his place at once (séif 2)?
- With which foot does one begin, and what is the minimal measure of a step (séif 3)?
- Why is adding beyond three steps יוהרא (séif 4)?
- Does the ש״ץ step back at the לחש and at the חזרה, and what does he say or not say at the repetition (séifim 5-6)?
