This siman teaches the errors of the ש״ץ (chazzan): skipping a berakha and knowing how to return — we do not remove him, but skipping ברכת המלשינים — we remove him at once (שמא אפיקורוס הוא); one who does not know how to return to his place and his replacement (יעמוד אחר תחתיו); the repetition of the ש״ץ like the individual and the טורח הצבור (שחרית of ר״ח); and erring in the silent Amida (בלחש). Hebrew text, fluent English translation and explanation of the ד׳ seifim, with a section of practical cases.

Our Sages taught (ברכות כ״ט.): הַטּוֹעֶה בְּכָל הַבְּרָכוֹת כֻּלָּן אֵין מַעֲלִין אוֹתוֹ, בְּבִרְכַּת הַמִּינִים מַעֲלִין אוֹתוֹ — חוֹשְׁשִׁין שֶׁמָּא מִין הוּא — one who errs in all the other berakhot is not made to step down from the amud; but in the blessing against the heretics (ברכת המינים) he is made to step down, for we suspect he may himself be a min. The siman deals with the chazzan who errs: the skipped berakha, the replacement, the repetition, and the error in the silent Amida. We study here at the level of principle; for personal conduct, one refers to the custom and to the ruling of the Rav.

A. The chazzan who errs — the ד׳ seifim
שְׁלִיחַ צִבּוּר שֶׁטָּעָה — the chazzan who errs — the ש״ץ does not pray for himself alone but discharges the public. Hence two tensions: on one side the suspicion of heresy when he skips specifically ברכת המלשינים (directed against the heretics), which causes him to be removed at once; on the other the concern for טורח הצבור (the burden on the congregation), which eases the duty to return when another prayer (Musaf) will make up the omission. Between the two: where the replacement resumes and the fate of an error in the silent Amida.
Seif 1 — דילג ברכה: the skipped berakha and ברכת המלשינים
Seif 1: a ש״ץ who erred and skipped one of the berakhot, and when reminded knows how to return to his place — we do not remove him (אין מסלקין אותו). But if he skipped ברכת המלשינים — we remove him at once (מסלקין אותו מיד), lest he be a heretic (שמא אפיקורוס הוא). And if he began it and erred — we do not remove him.
An ordinary berakha skipped, with a ש״ץ who knows how to return to his place, is not grave: אין מסלקין אותו. But ברכת המלשינים (the blessing against delators and heretics) is different: skipping it raises the suspicion that he does not wish to curse himself — שמא אפיקורוס הוא — and he is removed at once. Yet if he has begun it and erred, the suspicion falls away: אין מסלקין אותו.
Seif 2 — אינו יודע לחזור: the replacement and where he resumes
Seif 2: a ש״ץ who erred and does not know how to return to his place — another stands in his stead (יעמוד אחר תחתיו) and begins from the start of the berakha in which this one erred, if the error was in the middle berakhot (אמצעיות). And if it was in the first three (ג׳ ראשונות) — he begins at the beginning (בראש); and if in the last three (ג׳ אחרונות) — he begins at רצה.
If the ש״ץ no longer knows how to return, another replaces him. Where does the replacement resume? It depends on the group of the Amida: in the אמצעיות (middle berakhot), he resumes at the start of the erred berakha; in the ג׳ ראשונות, since they count as one whole, he resumes at the beginning; in the ג׳ אחרונות, he resumes at רצה (the start of the last group).
Seif 3 — חזרת הש״ץ: the repetition and the טורח הצבור
Seif 3: wherever the individual repeats his prayer, the ש״ץ repeats when praying aloud if he erred like him — except שחרית של ראש חודש: if the ש״ץ forgot and did not say יעלה ויבא until he completed his prayer, we do not make him return because of טורח הצבור (the burden on the congregation), since the Musaf prayer is before him, where he will mention ראש חודש. But if he remembered before completing his prayer, he returns to רצה, and there is no טורח ציבור in this. Rama: some say that if he erred in שחרית of Shabbat and Yom Tov, its law is like ראש חודש, and so is the custom.
General rule: the ש״ץ aloud repeats wherever the individual would repeat. The exception is שחרית of ראש חודש: if he forgot יעלה ויבא and completed his prayer, we do not make him return, out of regard for טורח הצבור — all the more so since Musaf follows, where he will mention ראש חודש. But if he remembers before finishing, he returns to רצה (little burden). The Rama adds: the same holds at שחרית of Shabbat and Yom Tov, and so is the custom.
Seif 4 — טעה בלחש: erring in the silent Amida
Seif 4: if the ש״ץ erred when praying silently (בלחש) — he never repeats a second time because of טורח הצבור, but relies on the prayer he will pray aloud. And this provided he did not err in the first three berakhot (ג׳ ראשונות), for if he erred in them he always returns, as the individual returns.
Since the ש״ץ will in any case pray aloud, an error in his silent Amida does not require redoing it on its own: לעולם אינו חוזר out of regard for טורח הצבור — he relies on the קול רם. An important reservation: this applies only if he did not err in the ג׳ ראשונות (the foundations of the prayer); there, he returns always, exactly like the individual.
The siman in one sentence: a ש״ץ who skips a berakha and knows how to return is not removed, but if he skips ברכת המלשינים he is removed at once (שמא אפיקורוס הוא); if he does not know how to return, another replaces him and resumes according to the group (ג׳ ראשונות at the beginning, אמצעיות in its place, ג׳ אחרונות at רצה); the ש״ץ repeats like the individual aloud, except שחרית of ר״ח where we do not make him return out of טורח הצבור; and if he erred silently, he does not repeat but relies on the קול רם — except in the ג׳ ראשונות.
Practical cases
Case 1 — Skipping a berakha
Situation: the ש״ץ skipped a berakha of the Amida. Must he be removed?
Conduct: for an ordinary berakha, if he knows how to return to his place when reminded — אין מסלקין אותו, we do not remove him. But if he skipped ברכת המלשינים — מסלקין אותו מיד, we remove him at once, שמא אפיקורוס הוא. Yet if he has begun it and erred, the suspicion falls away and we do not remove him. For the practical application, one follows one's Rav.
Case 2 — The replacement and where he resumes
Situation: the ש״ץ erred and no longer knows where to return. Another replaces him — where does he resume?
Conduct: the replacement resumes at the start of the berakha in which the other erred if it was in the אמצעיות; he resumes at the beginning (בראש) if the error was in the ג׳ ראשונות (they count as one whole); and at רצה if it was in the ג׳ אחרונות. For the details (how he is appointed, and when), one follows one's Rav.
Case 3 — Forgetting יעלה ויבא at שחרית of ראש חודש
Situation: the ש״ץ forgot יעלה ויבא at שחרית of ראש חודש and completed his prayer aloud. Must he return?
Conduct: no — אין מחזירין אותו מפני טורח הצבור, we do not make him return, since Musaf follows and he will mention ראש חודש there. But if he remembered before completing his prayer, he returns to רצה (little burden). According to the Rama, the same holds at שחרית of Shabbat and Yom Tov. For borderline cases, one follows one's Rav.
Comprehension questions
Check your understanding:
- Why is ברכת המלשינים treated differently from the other berakhot when the ש״ץ skips it (seif 1)?
- What is the ruling if he has already begun it and then erred, and why?
- Where does the replacement resume according to the group of the Amida — ג׳ ראשונות, אמצעיות, ג׳ אחרונות (seif 2)?
- Why do we not make the ש״ץ return when he forgot יעלה ויבא at שחרית of ר״ח (seif 3)?
- Why does an error silently not require repeating, and what is the reservation to this (seif 4)?
