The Siman — Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim siman קצ״ח (סעיף אחד) · summary, seif by seif
And it contains a single seif (סעיף אחד): having settled who joins the zimun, the Choulhan Aroukh turns to the man who does not join. He walks in having eaten nothing — so he cannot say שאכלנו משלו, which in his mouth would be untrue. The siman therefore puts the right words in his mouth, and those words depend only on what he heard: the leader’s invitation calls for ברוך ומבורך שמו תמיד לעולם ועד; the diners’ response, already under way, calls only for אמן. The Rama grafts on a general rule — every blessing a person hears obliges him to answer amen. Two extensions remain: with ten his answer carries the Name; and one who was there without eating answers twice, after the leader and then after the diners.

The main themes of the Siman

הַנִּכְנָס וְלֹא אָכַל
one who walks in without having eaten
שלשה שאכלו והם מברכין ונכנס אחד שלא אכל — and he cannot say שאכלנו משלו; so too the Rambam opens: הנכנס אצל אחרים ומצאן מברכין בברכת הזמון (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ה׳ הלכה י״ז).
בָּרוּךְ וּמְבֹרָךְ
the answer to the invitation
He heard נברך שאכלנו משלו — he answers ברוך ומבורך שמו תמיד לעולם ועד; and in the Gemara: אשכחינהו דקא אמרי נברך אומר ברוך ומבורך (ברכות מ״ה ע״ב).
עֲנִיַּת אָמֵן
the amen of one who arrives too late
He walked in while the diners were answering ברוך שאכלנו משלו — he answers amen; and the Rama generalises: וכן בכל הברכות שאדם שומע חייב לענות אמן (רמ״א או״ח קצ״ח:א).
בַּעֲשָׂרָה
a zimun of ten
And if they are ten — he says ברוך אלהינו ומבורך שמו תמיד לעולם ועד; so the Tur brought in the name of the Halakhot Gedolot (טור או״ח קצ״ח).

Frequently asked questions — Siman קצ״ח

What does one who walks in during the zimun without having eaten answer (Siman 198)?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 198:1, he answers the leader: « אם נכנס כשאומר המברך נברך שאכלנו משלו עונה אחריו ברוך ומבורך שמו תמיד לעולם ועד » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ח:א). He does not say « ברוך שאכלנו משלו », since he has eaten nothing. The source is the Gemara: « בא ומצאן כשהן מברכים מהו אומר אחריהם » (ברכות מ״ה ע״ב), and « אשכחינהו דקא אמרי נברך אומר ברוך ומבורך » (ברכות מ״ה ע״ב); the Rambam codified it: « אם מצא המברך אומר נברך הוא עונה ברוך הוא ומברך » (רמב״ם הלכות ברכות פרק ה׳ הלכה י״ז).

And if he walks in while the diners are already answering (Siman 198)?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 198:1, he answers amen: « ואם נכנס כשאחרים עונים ברוך שאכלנו משלו עונה אחריהם אמן » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ח:א). The reason is that he did not hear the invitation — « כיון שלא שמע מפי המזמן שבקשו לברך » (מ״ב קצ״ח:ג) — and the Rama turns it into a general rule: « וכן בכל הברכו׳ שאדם שומע חייב לענות אמן » (רמ״א או״ח קצ״ח:א), whose source is the Tur: « וכן בכל ברכות שאדם שומע בין ברכת פירות בין ברכת מצות עונה אמן » (טור או״ח קצ״ח).

What does he say if the zimun is made with ten (Siman 198)?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 198:1: « ואם הם י׳ אומר ברוך אלהינו ומבורך שמו תמיד לעולם ועד » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ח:א). The Tur had it in the name of the Halakhot Gedolot — « וכתב בה״ג ואי הוו י׳ אומר ברוך אלהינו ומבורך שמו תמיד לעולם ועד » (טור או״ח קצ״ח) — and the Mishna Berura insists it presupposes hearing the invitation: « היינו כששמע להמברך שאמר נברך לאלהינו ואם שמע רק להעונים אומר רק אמן בלבד » (מ״ב קצ״ח:ו).

And one who was present without eating (Siman 198)?

According to the Choulhan Aroukh, Orach Chaim 198:1, he answers twice: « וה״ה אם היה שם כשגמרו מלאכול ולא אכל עמהם כך הוא עונה אחר המברך ואחר העונים » (שו״ע או״ח קצ״ח:א). The Mishna Berura spells it out: « אף שאמר מתחלה עם המסובין ברוך ומבורך וכו׳ צריך לענות לבסוף אמן ג״כ אחר העונים » (מ״ב קצ״ח:ז). summary: two answers and two reasons — one replies to the call, the other is the amen owed for any blessing heard.
