Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe? The Shulchan Aruch HaRav is not a commentary on the Mechaber (מחבר) — it is an independent and complete Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity: it combines halacha (הלכה) + reasons of the mitzvot + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Chabad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. The Rebbe explicitly instructed to study the Shulchan Aruch HaRav This page gathers the Rav's way on Siman ד׳ — the morning netilat yadayim — which the Rav opens with a magnificent development of the yesod of the soul renewed each morning (« חֲדָשִׁים לַבְּקָרִים »): a person rises כְּבְרִיָּה חֲדָשָׁה and sanctifies his hands from the כלי like the Kohen מְקַדֵּשׁ יָדָיו מִן הַכִּיּוֹר before his service.

The Alter Rebbe's own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.4), followed by our English translation. The Mechaber treats this siman in 23 seifim (כ״ג סעיפים); the Alter Rebbe in 21 (כ״א סעיפים). Seif א — the soul renewed כבריה חדשה — is the summit of the siman.

The summit of the siman. Every person who rises in the morning — whether or not he has relieved himself — must wash his hands with a רביעית הלוג of water from a כלי (vessel), even if he will pray only several hours later. Why? Because when the Holy One returns a person's soul, he becomes like a new creature (כִּבְרִיָּה חֲדָשָׁה), as it is written: « חֲדָשִׁים לַבְּקָרִים — renewed each morning ». A person deposits his weary soul, and the Holy One returns it new and rested, so that he may serve Hashem with all his strength all day — for « this is the whole of man ». We must therefore sanctify ourselves with His sanctity and take our hands from the כלי — like the Kohen who each day sanctified his hands מן הכיור before his service. And since the water must be taken from the כלי precisely, one blesses « עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם » and not « עַל רְחִיצַת יָדַיִם »: for the vessel from which one pours upon the hands is called « נַטְלָא » in the language of Chazal — hence the wording of netilah, to teach that a כלי is required. Magnificent chiddush of the Rav: he founds the entire mitzvah on the renewal of the soul and the analogy to the Kohen, and from this derives even the very word « netilah ».
For this netilah, the water need not come upon the hands by human force (כח אדם / כח גברא) specifically: even if he dipped his hands into a vessel of water (שכשוך), the netilah is valid. Chiddush of the Rav: unlike the netilah of the meal (where כח גברא is indispensable), the morning netilah does not require it — the Rav posits this at the outset as a distinctive trait of this netilah.

If he has no כלי at all, but washes his hands with water drawn outside a כלי, or lacks a רביעית הלוג — he should not refrain from blessing « עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם », by לא פלוג רבנן, as long as the water is fit (כשרה) for netilah. But if he has no water fit for netilah at all (cf. siman 160), and will pray only after a long delay — such that he will be distracted (היסח הדעת) and need to repeat the netilah for prayer — then he does not bless on this netilah. And if he has no water at all and wishes to pray at once: he must clean his hands before prayer with a stone, earth, a beam, or any מידי דמנקי, and bless « עַל נְקִיּוּת יָדַיִם ». If he does not wish to pray at once and slept clothed: he need not even clean his hands, and may say all the morning berachot without netilah — for hands of which one knows no impurity are not unfit for a berachah, the netilah having been instituted only for Keriat Shema and prayer. But if he slept naked: it is forbidden to utter the Name or words of Torah before cleaning his hands with any מידי דמנקי, since he presumably touched the covered places (thigh, leg…) where there are מלמולי זיעה — « for the hands are active » (שהידים עסקניות הן). Chiddush of the Rav: he condenses here, in a single structured seif, what the Mechaber spreads over several (seifim 22-23), and clearly ranks the cases.
The Sages said: whoever sleeps at night sixty breaths — his soul having departed — the רוח הטומאה comes to rest upon his body; and as soon as he wakes, it departs from his whole body except his hands, from which it does not depart until he pours water upon them three times, on each hand separately. He should not pour three times in a row on one hand, but once on the right, once on the left, and so three times (alternating). Chiddush of the Rav: he specifies the exact mode of alternation — right/left, right/left, right/left — where the Mechaber says merely « three times ».
Before taking his hands in the manner explained, he should not touch the mouth — lest he become mute —, nor the ears — lest he become deaf —, nor the eyes — lest he become blind —, nor the nose or mouth — lest he develop « polypos » (an affliction of nose and mouth). Chiddush of the Rav: he spells out for each organ the precise harm (mute/deaf/blind/polypos), giving the reasons where the Mechaber merely lists the organs.
Likewise, before the netilah he should not touch a place of blood-letting (מקום הקזה), nor any food or drink — lest he render them impure. Chiddush of the Rav: he groups in one seif the concern of the מקום הקזה (which the Mechaber, seif 4, links to rubbing) and the concern of contaminating food — the רוח רעה being communicable.
There is no need to dry the hands after the morning netilah, and it is permitted to bless « עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם » without drying — likewise for all the other berachot. Only the fingers (האצבעות) need be washed; nonetheless it is good to wash them up to the פרק הזרוע (the wrist/forearm joint). Chiddush of the Rav: this seif on the measure of the netilah (the fingers, and מצוה מן המובחר up to the wrist) and the exemption from drying has no explicit parallel in the Mechaber.
The morning netilah: one does not pour onto the ground, but into a vessel (כלי); and it is good that the lower vessel (which receives the water) be a lowly vessel (מאוס). Chiddush of the Rav: he adds the preference for a כלי תחתון מאוס — a point of conduct absent in the Mechaber, who merely forbids the ground.
The water of the morning netilah: it is forbidden to use or benefit from it, because of the רוח רעה that rests upon it. He should therefore not leave it overnight in the house, and should be careful not to pour it out in the house or in any place where people pass, lest someone touch it and be harmed. Chiddush of the Rav: he adds « לא ילינם בבית » (not to leave it overnight), extending the Mechaber's concern.
When he takes his hands, he must wash the right first, for the reason explained in siman 2 (the importance of the right, חשיבות הימין). And because it is good that the purifying waters come from the right — for the reason explained in the Zohar — he should take the vessel of water in his right hand and pass it to his left, so as to pour first on the right. Chiddush of the Rav: he founds the practice on the Zohar and links this seif to siman 2 (and thence to the order of the shoes).
One who has not yet done the morning netilah should not pour the water upon another's hands, for it is said: « וְהִזָּה הַטָּהוֹר עַל הַטָּמֵא » (the pure sprinkles upon the impure — and not the reverse). Chiddush of the Rav: he anchors the prohibition in the verse, giving it a scriptural basis the Mechaber leaves implicit.
If he dipped (שכשוך) his hands three times in a single vessel of water, the netilah does not avail to remove the רוח רעה: from the first dipping, all the water in the vessel became impure, like waste water (מי שופכין). If he dipped them three times in three distinct waters, or in a river (where the water flows away, each time new), there is doubt (ספק) whether the רוח רעה is removed — and it is good to repeat the netilah כדינם (by threefold pouring from the כלי), for perhaps the רוח רעה departs only by the threefold ערוי from the vessel. Chiddush of the Rav: he establishes precisely why שכשוך, which avails for Keriat Shema/prayer (seif ב), does not avail for the רוח רעה — the water becoming מי שופכין.
One who stayed awake all night must do the netilah as soon as day breaks, even if he guarded his hands all night (e.g. in gloves), and even then he must take his hands from the כלי without a berachah at daybreak. Why? Because perhaps, when the Sages instituted the netilah each morning for the reason of seif א (the renewed soul), they did not wish to distinguish between one who slept — becoming a new creature — and one who did not sleep at all. Magnificent chiddush of the Rav: he explicitly links the doubt of the all-night-waker to the yesod of seif א — it is the institution tied to the בריה חדשה that creates the doubt, hence netilah without berachah.
One who rises before עמוד השחר and does the netilah — it is good to pour again three times כדינם at daybreak, for perhaps the night itself causes the רוח רעה to rest on the hands, even without sleep. And even if he then lay down for a fixed sleep (שנת קבע) — where the רוח רעה surely rests and he must pour three times on rising — he still does not bless on this netilah, for the berachah « עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם » was instituted only when one becomes a new creature (seif א), and in this second sleep he does not become one: one becomes a new creature once, not twice. Magnificent chiddush of the Rav: again, the yesod of the בריה חדשה (seif א) decides the doubt of the berachah — a person « renews » only once per day.
If he slept during the day the measure of sixty breaths, it is good to pour water three times on his hands, for perhaps the sleep causes the רוח רעה to rest on the hands even by day. (Without a berachah — ספק.) Chiddush of the Rav: he sets this case as a distinct « good »/doubt, founded on sleep itself as the cause, independent of the hour.
King David, peace be upon him, was careful not to sleep sixty breaths in a row the whole night, so as not to taste the taste of death: he would doze « like a horse » until midnight (חצות), and at חצות he would rise, « mighty as a lion » (מתגבר כארי). Chiddush of the Rav: he adds the positive image — David dozing כסוס then rising כארי at חצות — joining David's conduct to the custom of חצות, where the Mechaber notes only the caution of sleep.
Some have the custom to rinse their mouth in the morning, because of the secretions (רירים) within it — in order to bless the great Name in sanctity and purity (בקדושה ובטהרה). Chiddush of the Rav: he adds the elevated reason — not merely cleanliness but the qedushah of the berachah — which rejoins the yesod of seif א: preparing the body to serve and to bless.
These are the things that require netilah with water specifically (and not by any מידי דמנקי), yet without pouring three times: one who rises from bed, who leaves the privy or the bath-house, who cuts his nails, who removes his shoes by hand, who touches his feet, who touches his body with his hand, who washes his head, who touches a louse, who has marital relations, who searches his garments (even without finding), who walks among graves, who touches a corpse. But one who merely went near a corpse needs no netilah — though the custom is to do it even on entering to one corpse, and likewise for those who accompany it. And one who did one of these without doing the netilah: if a talmid chacham, his learning is forgotten; and if not, he loses his mind. Chiddush of the Rav: he clearly distinguishes « netilah with water specifically, but without threefold pouring » from the full morning netilah — and refines the cases (אצל מת / נכנס למת) the Mechaber leaves briefer.
One who lets blood from the shoulders and does not wash his hands afterward — will fear seven days, without knowing what he fears. One who shaves and does not wash — fears three days. One who cuts his nails and does not wash — fears one day. Chiddush of the Rav: he restates the gradation (7 / 3 / 1), clarifying the link to seif יח — these acts call for a netilah with water, and neglecting it engenders the מפחד.
One who washes his face and does not dry it well — his face cracks, or sores arise on it; his remedy is to wash it much in beet-water (מי תרדין). Chiddush of the Rav: advice of conduct and bodily health, in line with the care due to the כלי of service.
A person washes his face and feet each day — for the honor of his Maker (כבוד קונו), for it is said: « כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים עָשָׂה אֶת הָאָדָם » (for in the image of G-d He made man). Chiddush of the Rav (closing seif): he seals the siman by linking the daily cleanliness to כבוד קונו and the צלם אלקים — the very yesod that opened seif א (man renewed to serve) crowns the siman here: the body is honored because it bears the divine image.
Source: Sefaria — Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim ד׳ (Kehot edition, 21 seifim / כ״א סעיפים). English translation: DAAT. The Mechaber treats this siman in 23 seifim (כ״ג סעיפים); no passage is quoted outside this verifiable text.
The yesod: the renewed soul —
The Alter Rebbe's great reading — which crowns the opening of Orach Chayim — is set out in seif א, one of the most beautiful developments in his entire Shulchan Aruch: the morning netilah is not first an act of hygiene, nor even merely the removal of the רוח רעה, but the sanctification of a person become a new creature, who takes his hands from the כלי like the Kohen מן הכיור before his avodah.
« Renewed each morning » — man as a new creature
The principle (seif א). When the Holy One returns a person's soul — deposited « weary » at night and restored « new and rested » — he becomes The morning is not the mere continuation of the day before: it is a re-creation.
The inner import (Chabad). From this yesod the Rav draws the whole mitzvah: « צְרִיכִים אֲנַחְנוּ לְהִתְקַדֵּשׁ בִּקְדֻשָּׁתוֹ » — we must sanctify ourselves with His sanctity and take our hands from the כלי like the Kohen מקדש ידיו מן הכיור before his service. The morning netilah is the inaugural avodah of the day: the renewed person sanctifies himself to serve Hashem « בכל יכלתו…
The reason of the כלי / נטלא. Because this sanctification is done מן הכלי דווקא (like the כיור), one blesses « עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם » and not « עַל רְחִיצַת יָדַיִם »: the vessel is called « נַטְלָא » in the language of Chazal, and the word « netilah » itself teaches that a כלי is required. Thus the Rav derives even the name of the berachah from his yesod of qedushah.
The yesod decides the doubts (the berachah)
The principle (seifim יג-יד). Awake all night; risen before עמוד השחר then asleep again — in these cases the netilah is done without a berachah.
The Rav's reading. This is not a « technical » safek berachot: the Rav ties it explicitly to seif א. The berachah was instituted « אֶלָּא כְּשֶׁנַּעֲשֶׂה בְּרִיָּה חֲדָשָׁה ». So the all-night-waker (was he « renewed »?) is in doubt; and the re-sleeper does not « renew » a second time — « פַּעַם אַחַת… The yesod thus becomes the very criterion of safek berachot.
Consequence. From seif א to seif יד, a single thread: the morning netilah is the sanctification of the re-created person; where the « renewal » is doubtful or absent, the water remains (for the רוח רעה), but the berachah falls silent.

The force of the Alter Rebbe's psak
A comparison of the Alter Rebbe's way with those of the Mechaber, the Rama (רמ״א) and the Mishnah Berurah (משנה ברורה) on the key points of siman ד׳. The Shulchan Aruch HaRav (שולחן ערוך הרב) row is highlighted — it sets out the Rav's own sensibility as it emerges from his text (§1, 21 seifim). The Rav rules in 21 seifim what the Mechaber arranges in 23.
| Topic | Mechaber | Rama | Mishnah Berurah | Way of the Alter Rebbe
The act and the berachah. Adds Asher Yatzar. | MB 4:1 — reports both reasons (רוח רעה; qedushah / בריה חדשה) and the nafka mina for the berachah. | Way of the Alter Rebbe — magnificent chiddush: he founds the whole siman on the renewed soul (כבריה חדשה, חדשים לבקרים) and the analogy to the Kohen מקדש ידיו מן הכיור, deriving from it even the name of the berachah (the כלי / נטלא). |
| כח גברא / כלי (seif ב) | OC 4:6-7 — no רביעית required; the Rama: neither כלי nor כח גברא is indispensable (Mordechai, Rashba). | Gloss on 4:7: « מִיהוּ אֵינוֹ מְעַכֵּב לֹא כְּלִי וְלֹא כֹּחַ גַּבְרָא » (responsum of the Rashba). | MB 4:7 — details what is not indispensable in the morning netilah versus the meal. | Way of the Alter Rebbe — posits already in seif ב that שכשוך suffices (no כח גברא required), while maintaining (seif א) that the מצוה לכתחילה is מן הכלי דווקא, like the כיור. Chiddush: he reconciles the law (שכשוך avails) and the reason (the כלי is the ideal of qedushah). |
| ימין / שמאל (seif י) | OC 4:10 — take the כלי in the right hand, pass to the left, pour first on the right. | — (no gloss) | MB 4:22 — explains the reason for the priority of the right and the reference to siman 2. | Way of the Alter Rebbe — chiddush: he founds the priority of the right on the Zohar (the purifying waters come מן הימין) and explicitly links it to siman 2 (חשיבות הימין). |
| שכשוך / רוח רעה (seifim ב, יב) | OC 4:12 — שכשוך avails for KS/prayer, but not for the רוח רעה; doubt if three distinct waters. | — (no gloss) | MB 4:30-32 — details שכשוך, the three waters and the river. | Way of the Alter Rebbe — chiddush of reasoning: he explains why שכשוך does not avail for the רוח רעה — from the first dipping the water becomes כמי שופכין — and rules טוב שיחזור ויטלם כדינם by threefold ערוי from the כלי. |
| ספק ברכה (seifim יג-יד) | OC 4:13-15 — awake all night / before dawn / slept by day: doubts. | Gloss on 4:13-15: « וְיִטְּלֵם בְּלֹא בְּרָכָה » (Rosh, Rashba). Rules without a berachah. | MB 4:28-30 — applies safek berachot lehakel to the various cases. | Way of the Alter Rebbe — chiddush: he grounds the safek berachot in the yesod of seif א: the berachah was instituted only כשנעשה בריה חדשה; the re-sleeper does not renew twice — « פעם אחת ולא שתי פעמים ». |
| נקיות / כבוד קונו (seifim יז, כא) | OC 4:17 — some rinse the mouth (רירים). No closing seif on כבוד קונו. | — | MB 4:38 — the נקיות and the preparation for the berachah. | Way of the Alter Rebbe — structural chiddush: rinsing the mouth « כְּדֵי לְבָרֵךְ אֶת שֵׁם הַגָּדוֹל בִּקְדֻשָּׁה וּבְטָהֳרָה » (seif יז), and a closing seif (כא) linking the daily cleanliness to כבוד קונו and the צלם אלקים. |

The guiding lines of the Rav's way on this siman
Four orientations that characterize the Alter Rebbe's sensibility on the morning netilat yadayim — beyond the simple application of the rules. Each follows the structure: principle of the siman → the Rav's reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the actual text of the Rav (§1).
Qedushah — man re-created each morning
Principle of the siman: wash the hands on waking, מן הכלי, and bless « עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם » (seif א).
The Rav's reading: a person rises כְּבְרִיָּה חֲדָשָׁה (« חדשים לבקרים »); he sanctifies himself with His sanctity and takes his hands from the כלי like the Kohen מקדש ידיו מן הכיור before his avodah. The netilah inaugurates the day of service.
Practical consequence: one performs the morning netilah with the awareness of an avodah — the sanctification of the renewed person to serve, not a mere act of hygiene.
The two reasons — רוח רעה and qedushah
Principle of the siman: pour three times, alternating right/left, להעביר רוח רעה (seif ד); the water forbidden for benefit (seif ט).
The Rav's reading: the two reasons coexist — the רוח רעה (after the manner of the Zohar) and qedushah (seif א). Their distinction yields the nafka mina: שכשוך avails for qedushah/prayer but not for the רוח רעה (seif יב); the doubts bear on the רוח רעה when the « renewal » is uncertain.
Practical consequence: one pours three times, alternating, from the כלי; one relies on שכשוך only for KS/prayer; one does not benefit from this water.
The order ימין/שמאל — the priority of the right
Principle of the siman: take the כלי in the right hand, pass it to the left, pour first on the right (seif י).
The Rav's reading: he founds the priority of the right on the Zohar (the purifying waters come מן הימין) and links it to the חשיבות הימין of siman 2 (the order of shoes, of washing). The right opens, here as there.
Practical consequence: one holds the נטלא in the right, passes it to the left, pours first on the right hand — conduct of qedushah in the most everyday gesture.
Safek berachot in the light of the yesod
Principle of the siman: awake all night / before dawn / slept by day — netilah without a berachah (seifim
The Rav's reading: the criterion of safek berachot is the « renewal » of seif א. The berachah is instituted only כשנעשה בריה חדשה; the re-sleeper does not become one twice — « פעם אחת ולא שתי פעמים ». The yesod commands the practical halacha.
Practical consequence: in all these doubtful cases one pours three times (for the רוח רעה) without the berachah; for the precise case, one refers to the Rav.
The Chabad practical conduct
Six points of conduct that follow directly from siman ד׳ in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and Chabad — presented at the level of principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of particular cases.
For the Chabad Chassid — Siman
- ① The morning netilah — pour three times, from the כלי. On waking, pour water from a כלי (נטלא) three times, alternating right/left, by the bed; do not pour onto the ground (seifim ד, ח, י). The conduct is the avodah of a renewed person. Basis: SA HaRav seifim א, ד, ח, י.
- ② The berachah « עַל נְטִילַת יָדַיִם ». One blesses after taking the hands from the כלי; no drying is needed; the fingers suffice, and מצוה מן המובחר up to the wrist (seif ז). The Rama adds « Asher Yatzar » (Abudraham). Basis: SA HaRav seifim א, ז; Rama OC 4:1.
- ③ Do not touch the mouth/eyes/ears before the netilah. Before taking the hands, do not touch mouth, ears, eyes, nose (seif ה), nor a מקום הקזה, nor food or drink (seif ו). Basis: SA HaRav seifim ה-ו.
- ④ The priority of the right (ימין). Hold the נטלא in the right, pass it to the left, pour first on the right hand — per the Zohar and the חשיבות הימין of siman 2. Basis: SA HaRav seif י, reference to siman 2.
- ⑤ The doubts — without a berachah. Awake all night, risen before dawn then asleep again, or daytime sleep: pour three times (for the רוח רעה) without saying the berachah — for one becomes a new creature only once (seifim יג-טו). Basis: SA HaRav seifim יג-טו; for the precise case, consult a Rav.
- ⑥ Without water, and the daily נקיות. Without water (travel, hospital) and wishing to pray at once: clean the hands (stone, earth, מידי דמנקי) and bless « עַל נְקִיּוּת יָדַיִם » (seif ג). And one washes face and feet each day Basis: SA HaRav seifim ג, כא; reference to siman 160.
⚠ This section presents the Chabad conduct founded on the Shulchan Aruch HaRav, siman ד׳ (actual text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question, and especially for the doubts of berachah: consult your Rav.
