Law of erecting partitions for Shabbos, in 8 seifim:
An individual who took shelter on Shabbos in a plain (bik'a) and surrounded it with defective partitions (mechitzos g'ruos) — such as shti without erev (uprights without transverses) or erev without shti (transverses without uprights), as will be explained in siman 362, which suffice to make the area a full reshus ha-yachid by Torah law even if it extends for several mil, so that one who throws into it from reshus ha-rabim is liable — nevertheless, by rabbinic decree they do not permit carrying within and from within to a full reshus ha-yachid except when the enclosure contains no more than beis sa'asayim. In that case it is permitted even if he did so in an inhabited area, although he could have made complete partitions. But if it contains more than beis sa'asayim, one may carry within only within 4 amos, like in a karmelis. However, one who encloses with complete partitions (mechitzos g'muros) may carry within even if it contains more than beis sa'asayim, and it is not like a karpef that was not enclosed for dwelling, since he enclosed it to dwell there on Shabbos.
But a caravan (shayara) that camped in a plain and was surrounded with defective partitions, even very extensive — they may carry throughout the whole enclosure, since because they are many, the Sages permitted them to carry for all their needs. And "many" is not less than three. Provided they do not enclose more than they need, leaving an empty beis sa'asayim that they do not need for the use of their utensils and their animals. But if an empty beis sa'asayim remains — one may carry in the whole enclosure only within 4 amos, since it is perutza bimlu'oh (breached along its full width) to a forbidden place, namely to the empty beis sa'asayim.
When does this apply? When they enclosed more than six se'in. But if they did not enclose more than six, even though an empty beis sa'asayim remains to them, since they need only four se'in — it is permitted, since they are three and each one has two se'in. And there are those who disagree. And as for halacha, in rabbinic matters one follows the lenient.
But two who camped in a plain — their status is like that of an individual, and the two of them together have only beis sa'asayim, even though they need more.
And if there is a non-Jew with them, he does not join with them to constitute a shayara. Some say the same applies to a minor.
If they were three and enclosed all their needs more than beis sa'asayim, and one of them died on Shabbos — they remain permitted all of Shabbos, since Shabbos entered in a permitted state, and since it was permitted, it remains permitted (hoil ve-hutra hutra).
If they were two and enclosed more than beis sa'asayim, and others joined them on Shabbos — they are forbidden, since Shabbos entered in a forbidden state, for it is Shabbos that determines.

If there were three and each enclosed for himself side by side to dwell on Shabbos, and they made eruv together: if the outer ones are wide and the middle one is narrow — so that the middle one is perutza bimlu'oh to the outer ones, while the outer ones are not perutzos bimlu'an to the middle one but have projections (gipufim) extending beyond it on either side — the residents of the outer ones prevail over the middle one, that is, we regard them as also dwelling in it, and so there are three together, since there is no partition to separate between it and them, as it is breached to them along its full width; it is like a corner nook (keren zaviyos) for them, which does not constitute a domain of its own. Therefore they may carry in the middle even if it is very large, since they have become a shayara in it. And they may carry even in the outer ones, because these are considered as a courtyard to the middle one, which is a dwelling for them, since they have become a shayara in it. Some say the outer ones are permitted only up to sa'asayim, since they are not one domain with each other, because of their projections that separate between them. And if the enclosure of one of them is more than sa'asayim, the middle one is also forbidden, since it is perutza bimlu'oh to a forbidden place. But the second outer one, which contains only sa'asayim, is permitted. And as for halacha, in rabbinic matters one follows the lenient.
And if the middle one is wider than the outer ones, so that the outer ones are perutzos bimlu'an to the middle one, and the middle one has projections (gipufim) extending beyond them on either side — if one person is in each, each is given only beis sa'asayim, since the residents of the outer ones are not in the middle one, as it is not breached along its full width; rather, the middle one is in each of them, since they are breached to it along their full width, and so there are in each of them only two — he and the middle one — for the outer ones do not join with each other because of the projections of the middle one that separate between them. And if one of the outer ones is more than beis sa'asayim — it alone is forbidden, and the middle one does not become forbidden, since it has separating projections, and needless to say the second outer one.
Provided the breach between the middle and the outer ones is not more than 10 amos, for that would be a forbidding breach, as will be explained in siman 362.
But if the middle one is more than beis sa'asayim — the outer ones are also forbidden, since they are breached to it along their full width.
But if one is in each of the outer ones and two in the middle, or two in each of the outer ones and one in the middle — the two outer ones are given all their needs, for we regard the residents of the middle one as being in each of them, and so they are three together in each of them. And in the middle one too all their needs are permitted, because it is considered as a courtyard to the outer ones, according to the first opinion explained.

And all this is when the two long walls of the short karpef that is perutza bimlu'oh protrude and enter into the hollow of the wide one, for otherwise it is not a pirtza bimlu'oh; for a breach is called pirtza bimlu'oh only if the entire width-wall of a karpef, courtyard or house is breached. But if the width-wall was longer than the hollow of the width and protruded a tefach on this side and a tefach on that side, and it was breached to the measure of the hollow, and there remained of it the strip (pas) of a tefach on this side and the strip of a tefach on that side — even though the strips do not protrude inward into the hollow between the long walls but outward — this is not a pirtza bimlu'oh, since small projections (gipufim) remained of the breached wall. And even though these projections are not visible to one standing inside the karpef, courtyard or house that is breached along its full width, since they are visible to one standing outside — they are judged as strips (pasin) for the breach, just as a lechi visible from outside and not from inside is judged as a lechi for a mavoi, as will be explained in siman 363. And so here too, to one standing outside the short karpef, that is, inside the wide karpef, these wide projections extending on either side of the breach appear as if they were remnants and projections of the width-wall of the short one, and it was breached only in its middle. This is not so when the long walls of the short one protrude and enter into the hollow of the wide one: then it is evident and visible that these projections are not of the width-wall of the short one.
And provided the ends of these walls that protrude there are at least 3 tefachim away in width from the long walls of the wide karpef alongside them, for example when each of these projections is 3 tefachim long. But if they are not 3 tefachim away from them, they are as if joined (lavud) and attached there alongside the long walls of the wide one, and the air between them is as if closed. It follows that the short karpef has projections there, namely from the ends of its long walls to the long walls of the wide one, which are less than 3 tefachim on this side and less than 3 tefachim on that side, and there is no pirtza bimlu'oh here.
And whenever there is no pirtza bimlu'oh — each is a domain of its own, and they are given only beis sa'asayim in each. And if one of them contains more than beis sa'asayim — it alone is forbidden and the rest are permitted, since they are not perutzos bimlu'an to one another, and the breach is not more than ten amos.
The Rav's special chiddushim
Temporary reshus hayachid for Shabbos (360:1-3)
Chiddush 1 — Temporary reshus ha-yachid for Shabbos (360:1-3)
Creating a reshus hayachid for Shabbos
The Rav's chiddush: one can create a temporary reshus hayachid by enclosing a space before Shabbos. Tool for trips, camping, events.
Practical consequence: for Shabbos outdoors, prepare the enclosure beforehand.
