Laws of the water-channel that passes through a courtyard, containing 4 se'ifim:
A water-channel (amas ha-mayim) that passes through a courtyard, ten tefachim deep and four wide — one may not draw from it, unless one has set above it, across its width, a partition ten high at its entrance and at its exit, with one tefach of it submerged in the water. And if the partition entirely descends into the water, one tefach of it must protrude above the water, in order to separate between the outer waters — which are karmelis — and the inner waters. For since the channel does not remain in the courtyard but passes through it from one side to the other, it is not nullified with respect to the courtyard and constitutes a domain of its own, since it is ten deep and four wide, which is the measure that separates one domain from another. And since it is not nullified with respect to the courtyard, it is a karmelis in the courtyard, just as it is a karmelis before it enters the courtyard and after it leaves it. Therefore one must make for it partitions that separate between the water in the courtyard and the water outside.
And although they are nevertheless connected beneath the partition or above it, this does not matter, for the Sages were lenient with water, that a suspended partition is effective for it by virtue of gud achis, as explained in siman 355. Nevertheless, the wall of the courtyard that passes over them there is of no use at all, even if it were submerged a tefach in the water, because the Sages were lenient with water only with a partition made for the sake of the water in order to permit carrying within it, as explained there:
סעיף בIn the courtyard itself carrying is permitted — the channel pit acts as a partition

But within the courtyard itself it is permitted to carry, even if one did not erect partitions on the channel inside it; though the channel is a karmelis, it does not forbid the courtyard, even though they are open to each other along their full width and there is no partition between them, because the excavation of the channel itself acts as a partition between the water within it and the courtyard, since it is ten tefachim deep, and every trench ten deep is treated as a partition. And even if it is not ten deep at its edge but along a slope, if the slope gathers a depth of ten within 4 amos — it is treated as a partition; but if it gathers so only over more than 4 amos, it is not treated as a partition, as explained in siman 345. And when it is treated as a partition for the courtyard, it is permitted to carry in the courtyard even if the wall of the courtyard was breached along the width of the channel at its entrance and at its exit, and this breach is more than 10 amos — which would forbid the courtyard, were it not for the excavation of the channel within it, which is treated as a partition for it: the courtyard thus has 4 partitions on one side of the channel and 4 partitions on the other:
סעיף גPartition from edges without joining in the middle — lavud
If one began to build the partition at the edge from each side across the channel's width, without joining it in the middle of its width, and left an empty space in the middle of the entrance-and-exit partition so that the waters may enter and exit through there, if there is not 3 tefachim between them — it is permitted by virtue of lavud; and if there are 3 tefachim between them — it is forbidden. And if the openings through which the channel enters and exits are not 3 tefachim wide, a partition is not needed at all, since they are wholly considered sealed by virtue of lavud:

A courtyard that was breached and a tongue of sea passes through the breach: if it was not breached its full width and the breach is no more than ten amos — for such a breach does not forbid carrying in the courtyard, since it is for it like an entrance, as will be explained in siman 362 — it is permitted to draw from the tongue that entered into it and to bring the water into the house. And although it is ten deep and four wide, it does not constitute a domain of its own, for since it enters the courtyard and does not exit from it, it is like a pit in the courtyard: the partitions of the courtyard permit it, and it is not forbidden on account of being open to the sea, which is a karmelis.
But if it was breached its full width, or the breach is more than ten — it is forbidden to draw from it into the courtyard, since there is no partition above it between it and the waters outside, for there the courtyard was breached its full width or more than ten. And one must warn the public, who stumble in this in places where a river runs near courtyards.
But within the courtyard itself it is permitted to carry if the tongue is ten deep within 4 amos, which is considered a partition. This is when it is far from the seashore, or its banks are very high, such that there is no concern that the sea may deposit a sandbank, its depth be reduced below ten, and people would carry in the courtyard as at first, as will be explained in siman 363.
And if, at the place where the wall of the courtyard was breached, there remain below it ridges ten high, and the waters cover them — it is permitted to draw water from it into the courtyard. But it is forbidden to bring it into the house unless they made for it a partition ten high above the water, because the ridges covered by the water are considered a partition with respect to the courtyard but not with respect to the house: in the courtyard they are sometimes discernible and visible when the waters recede, but in the house they are never discernible and visible. Therefore it is forbidden to carry anything from the courtyard to the house if the tongue is not ten deep:
