Siman 146 — Which idol can be nullified and which cannot
Fifteen seifim — the Shulchan Arukh announces it itself: ובו ט״ו סעיפים. The previous siman asked what remains permitted although it was worshipped; this one asks how what is forbidden may become permitted again. The answer is ביטול — nullification. But it belongs only to one who believed, it works through an act and not a feeling, and it has a term: once the object is acquired by a Jew the door is shut forever (Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 146 — 15 seifim)
אלילים של עובד כוכבים שביטלה עובד כוכבים מותרת אבל ישראל אינו יכול לבטל אלילים של עובד כוכבים
Idols of a non-Jew, which a non-Jew has nullified, are permitted; but a Jew cannot nullify a non-Jew’s idols. The first sentence of the siman, and its key: nullification belongs only to the one who made the object a god.

Hebrew text of the fifteen seifim with a fluent English translation. Who nullifies and who cannot, the scrap of the market, the convert’s inheritance, the leaf of the ashera, the acts that degrade without nullifying, the sale to a Jewish goldsmith, the landslide and the flight, the fragments, the altar and the bimos, destruction and the name of contempt — explained step by step, with the mishnah, the Rambam, the Taz, the Shach, the Rama and the Pitchei Teshuvah.
In-depth pilpul: the hakirah on the nature of ביטול — withdrawal of the divine name or an act of degradation; zekhiyah between the Taz and the Bach; nullification by speech, from the Beit Yosef to the Darkhei Moshe; the pledge between the Ran and the Beit Yosef, with the Taz and the Shach on either side; the jointed idol; and the name of contempt, where the Nekudot HaKesef answer the Taz.
A master table of the fifteen seifim, the three axes of the siman, the six disputes in one table, the governing rules, the ביטול mnemonic, the classic pitfalls and a final flash card.
Practical halakhah according to the ש״ך, the ט״ז, the באר היטב, the פתחי תשובה and the נקודות הכסף, then contemporary cases. Note: the Admur HaZaken did not write a Shulchan Arukh on Yoreh De'ah — this is a level of psak, not “Daat HaRav”.
The one who held it to be a god, and he alone: « אלילים של עובד כוכבים שביטלה עובד כוכבים מותרת » (שו״ע יו״ד קמ״ו:א). The Taz supplies the verse: « דילפינן לה מדכתיב פסילי אלהיהם שעובד כוכבים פוסל אלוה שלו » (ט״ז יו״ד קמ״ו ס״ק א). A Jew never may, neither for his own idol nor for a non-Jew’s. For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
From when is it too late?
Once the object has come into Jewish hands and has been acquired: « אפילו אלילים של עובד כוכבים משבאה ליד ישראל וזכה בה שוב אין לה ביטול » (שו״ע יו״ד קמ״ו:ב). The Taz reads the doublet as a cumulative requirement: « וזהו שכתבו הטור והש״ע כפול לשון משבאה ליד ישראל וזכה בה משמע אבל זכייה לחוד לא » (ט״ז יו״ד קמ״ו ס״ק ג). The accessories, for their part, keep their nullification. For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
Does spitting or urinating before an idol nullify it?
No — that is contempt, not renunciation: « מיעכה שלא בפניה ולא חסרה או רקק בפניה השתין בפניה או גררה או זרק בה את הצואה לא בטלה » (שו״ע יו״ד קמ״ו:ז). The Talmud supplies the verse: « אָמַר חִזְקִיָּה, דְּאָמַר קְרָא: ״וְהָיָה כִי יִרְעַב וְהִתְקַצַּף וְקִלֵּל בְּמַלְכּוֹ וּבֵאלֹהָיו וּפָנָה לְמַעְלָה » (עבודה זרה נ״ג ע״א). Damage to the figure is required: the tip of the ear, the nose, the finger, or a crushed face. For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
Can a Muslim nullify an idol?
No, because he is not an idolater — this is the Rama’s gloss: « ישמעאלים שאינן עובדי עבודת כוכבים אינם יכולים לבטל » (רמ״א יו״ד קמ״ו:ה). The Pitchei Teshuvah reports in the name of the Tiferet LeMoshe that the criterion is not practice but birth: « עי׳ בתפארת למשה שכתב דר״ל אפילו ישראל מומר דאי לא פלח אפילו גר תושב וישמעאלים אין מבטלים ע״ש » (פתחי תשובה יו״ד קמ״ו ס״ק א). For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
Does selling an idol to a Jewish goldsmith nullify it?
The Mehaber brings both views: « מכרה או משכנה אפילו לצורף ישראל לא בטלה ויש מתירין בצורף ישראל » (שו״ע יו״ד קמ״ו:ח). On the pledge, the Taz follows the Ran and permits when the pledge amounts to a sale: « אלא ודאי דברי הר״ן עיקר דבמשכון דמתני׳ דהיינו הרהינו מודים חכמים לרבי דבטל » (ט״ז יו״ד קמ״ו ס״ק ח). The Shach follows the Beit Yosef and refuses: « ובב״י כתב דאפילו משכנה והרהינה אצלו שא״ל אם לא הבאתי לך המעות מכאן עד יום פלוני תהא שלך והגיע הזמן ולא פדאה לא בטלה לכ״ע ודלא כהר״ן » (ש״ך יו״ד קמ״ו ס״ק י). For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
What is to be done with an idol that can no longer be nullified?
Destroy it, and that is a mitzvah: « מצוה על כל המוצא אלילים שיבערנה ויאבדנה וכיצד מבערה שוחק וזורה לרוח או מטיל לים » (שו״ע יו״ד קמ״ו:י״ד). The Shach specifies that the Dead Sea receives the object as it is, but another watercourse requires grinding it first: « בלא שחיקה אבל לשאר נהרות בעי שחיקה ב״י וד״מ ושאר אחרונים » (ש״ך יו״ד קמ״ו ס״ק י״ג). For the application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
