Siman 147 — Not to swear by the name of idols, and the laws of mentioning their name
Five seifim — the Shulḥan Arukh announces it itself: The siman treats neither the idol nor its worship, but its name: swearing by it (lashes), pronouncing it (forbidden, “for a purpose or with no purpose”), causing a non-Jew to pronounce it. And over against that, three permissions: festival names that are men’s names, the names Scripture wrote, and mockery (Shulḥan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 147 — 5 seifim)
It is forbidden to mention it by its name, whether for a purpose or with no purpose. Eight words, and the whole siman: it is not the idol that is at issue here, it is its name — and the prohibition admits no exception of necessity.

Hebrew text of the five seifim with fluent English translation. The oath by the idol, the mention of its name, festival names, gerama, Scripture’s names and mockery — explained step by step, with the braita of Sanhedrin, the Rambam, the Tur, the Beit Yosef, and the Shakh, the Taz, the Ba’er Hetev and the Pitḥei Teshuvah in full.
In-depth pilpul: the ḥakira of the prohibition of mention — a prohibition of its own or a fence around the oath; the revuta of the word אפילו in the Taz against the Beit Yosef’s difficulty; gerama and the Radbaz; shituf, the Rama of Oraḥ Ḥayim 156 and the Noda BiYehudah; and the maḥloket over “אלהיך”.
A master table of the five seifim clause by clause, the reflex questions, the maḥloket over “אלהיך”, the five golden rules, the five words of the siman and the four classic pitfalls.
The practical halakha according to the ש״ך, the ט״ז, the באר היטב and the פתחי תשובה, then contemporary cases. Note: the Admur HaZaken did not write a Shulḥan Arukh on Yoreh De'ah — a level of psak, not “Daat HaRav”; the Nekudot HaKesef do not comment on this siman.
Two things, and they are not equally grave. A vow or an oath uttered in an idol’s name carries lashes:
And pronouncing its name is forbidden with no exception for need:
The Rambam specifies that only the vow and the oath incur the penalty:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
May one say the names of festivals and days?
Seif 2 permits it when those names are also people’s names:
With a single condition, which bears on the manner:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
May one administer an oath to a non-Jew?
Seif 3 forbids it:
The Pitḥei Teshuvah nevertheless reports the Radbaz, for the case of rescuing one’s property:
And he gives the condition of form:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
Why may one say “Bel” and “Nebo”?
Because Scripture wrote them — this is seif 4:
The Gemara gives it in the name of Rabbi Yoḥanan:
And the Shakh extends the permission beyond the examples cited:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
May one wish a non-Jew that his god help him?
The Rama writes so:
But the Taz went and checked the source, and concludes:
And the Shakh reports the Baḥ’s verdict:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
