Siman 231 — a man does not release himself (יורה דעה רל״א)
A single seif, and a boundary no foresight crosses: once the vow has taken effect there is only a מומחה or three men. “I may annul it whenever I wish” — אינו כלום. But before it takes effect everything is still open; and a vow for a term expires without anyone having to act. (Shulḥan Arukh, Yoreh De’ah 231 — 1 seif.)
A vow and an oath are released only by an expert or by three ordinary men; for even if he stipulated at the moment of the vow that he would annul it whenever he wished, or hung it on another — it is nothing. The reason: מיד כשחל הנדר, from the moment the vow takes effect.

The single seif in Hebrew, its translation, its clause-by-clause breakdown, the vocabulary (מומחה · ג׳ הדיוטות · ביטול · התרה · נדר לזמן), the sources — the Tur, the Rambam, the Rosh, the Rivash and seifim 37-38 of siman 228 — and the seven apparatus entries quoted one by one.
Four questions: ביטול and התרה, two regimes and the window between them; why an annulment clause is worth nothing while a vow for a term is worth everything; the Taz’s difficulty with the Rama’s gloss and the Shakh’s answer; and the case of the spouses in the second paragraph of the Taz’s ס״ק ג.
The rule in one sentence, the mechanism, the origin of each clause, the seven apparatus entries, the seif clause by clause, what remains open, the vocabulary and the standard pitfalls.
The practical halakha: what an annulment clause produces (nothing), what a third party’s immediate refusal produces (everything), the vow for a term, and the delicate case of the תקיעת כף between spouses. Note: the Admur HaZaken wrote no Shulḥan Arukh on Yoreh De’ah — this is a psak level, not “Daat HaRav”.
May I make a vow while reserving the right to annul it later?
No — or rather: you may, but the reservation will produce nothing. The Shulḥan Arukh writes “ אין הנדר והשבועה ניתרים אלא על פי מומחה או בג׳ הדיוטות ” (שו״ע יו״ד רל״א:א),
and on the escape clause: “ או שתלה (באחר) שיבטלנו אימתי שירצה אינו כלום ” (שו״ע יו״ד רל״א:א). The reason is given in the seif itself.
Why? A condition normally works in Jewish law.
Because release is not the vower’s to give. The Rambam writes it in six words: “ וְאֵין אָדָם יָכוֹל לְהַתִּיר שְׁבוּעַת עַצְמו ” (רמב״ם הלכות שבועות פרק ו׳ הלכה ג׳). A clause reserving the right to annul later is release in advance — that is, the same thing under another name.
And if my vow depended on someone’s agreement, and he refused?
That is another case, and the answer is the reverse. The Rama writes “ אבל אם לא קיימו ומיד ששמעו אמר שלא יהיה נדר הנדר בטל ” (רמ״א יו״ד רל״א:א).
The vow never took effect. The word “immediately” is decisive: the Taz specifies “ פירוש תיכף שישמע יוכל לבטלו אבל לא אחר כך ” (ט״ז יו״ד רל״א ס״ק ג).
What exactly is the difference between ביטול and התרה?
The moment, and the people required. ביטול comes before the vow takes effect, requires neither sage nor formula, and the Shakh says it works: “ אבל אם נדר על תנאי שיסכים חבירו או על תנאי שלא יבטלנו יכול חבירו לבטלו בכל לשון כמו שכתבתי בסימן רכ״ח ס״ק צ״ח עיין שם ” (ש״ך יו״ד רל״א ס״ק א). התרה comes after, and requires the sage or the three.
I vowed for a month. Must I have it released at the end?
No. The seif closes on precisely that: “ ומיהו אם נדר לזמן אין צריך התרה אלא לכשיגיע הזמן בטל ממילא ” (שו״ע יו״ד רל״א:א). The difference from the clause refused above is that the limit here is inside the vow and not upon it.
The Pitḥei Teshuva and the Nekudot HaKesef write nothing here. Is that a gap?
No, and nothing about the halakha follows from it. The Pitḥei Teshuva writes when the responsa literature has something to add; the Nekudot HaKesef when the Shakh wishes to answer the Taz. Both are present in force close by — six and four entries at siman 229, twenty and four at siman 232. Not one entry has been manufactured here to fill a column.
