Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קס״ג — דִּין מִי שֶׁאֵין לוֹ מַיִם וְהַמַּאֲכִיל לַאֲחֵרִים, which unfolds in the Rav over ב׳ סְעִיפִים (two seifim) : from the ban on eating without netila — even by means of a cloth (מַפָּה) or a spoon so as not to touch the bread — to the measures for the traveler who has no water (מִיל behind him, ד׳ מִילִין ahead of him), to the status of the garden-watchman (שׁוֹמֵר גִּנָּה), and then to the laws of feeder and eater and the prohibition of לִפְנֵי עִוֵּר לֹא תִתֵּן מִכְשֹׁל.

The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.163), followed by our English translation. The siman comprises two seifim (ב׳ סְעִיפִים ; seif k → .163.k).
It is forbidden to eat without netila, even if one wishes to wrap his hands in a cloth (מַפָּה) or to eat with a spoon without touching the bread — a decree (גְּזֵרָה) lest he come to touch. Even a traveler on the road whose mealtime has arrived and who has found no water: if he knows there is water ahead of him at a distance of four mil (ד׳ מִילִין) — he must wait until he reaches it; and if there is water behind him within less than a mil — he must go back there, even though he is pressed to continue on his way. But if there is water a mil behind him and more than four mil ahead of him — he wraps his hands in a cloth and eats his bread, or something dipped in liquid (דָּבָר שֶׁטִּבּוּלוֹ בְּמַשְׁקֶה), or eats by means of a spoon. The same applies if he is in doubt whether he will find water within four mil. The keeper of a garden or orchard — his status is like “behind him,” since he cannot leave his watch long enough to go a mil and return. But one who sits at home must go up to four mil if he knows he will find water.
One who feeds others does not require netilat yadayim; but the one who eats does require it, even though the feeder places the bread into his mouth and he himself does not touch the bread — a decree (גְּזֵרָה) lest he touch. As for the feeder, even though he touches — they did not decree upon him, for they did not decree upon the mere contact of unconsecrated food (חֻלִּין), but only upon eating, on account of habituation to terumah (סֶרֶךְ תְּרוּמָה); and for a food that is an uncommon thing, they did not decree. It is forbidden to feed one whom he knows has not washed his hands, because of “Before the blind you shall not place a stumbling block” (“וְלִפְנֵי עִוֵּר לֹא תִתֵּן מִכְשֹׁל”). And even the eater’s own bread, if he merely hands it to him — it is forbidden to assist the hands of transgressors (לְסַיֵּעַ יְדֵי עוֹבְרֵי עֲבֵרָה), as will be explained in siman שמ״ז.

The Habad practical conduct
Points of conduct flowing directly from siman קס״ג in the Alter Rebbe’s and Habad sensibility — presented at the level of the principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of the cases.
For the Habad Hassid — Siman
- ① Forbidden without netila. One does not eat bread without netila, even by means of a cloth (מַפָּה) or a spoon so as not to touch — גְּזֵרָה שֶׁמָּא יִגַּע. Basis: seif א.
- ② On the road — ahead / behind. Water ahead within ד׳ מִילִין → wait; behind within less than a מִיל → go back; otherwise (a מִיל behind and more than ד׳ מִילִין ahead) → wrap the hands in a cloth, or a spoon, or food dipped in liquid. Basis: seif א.
- ③ Doubt and watchman. Doubt of finding water within ד׳ מִילִין → as though there were none; a שׁוֹמֵר גִּנָּה or פַּרְדֵּס has the status of “behind him.” Basis: seif א.
- ④ One at home. One sitting at home must go up to ד׳ מִילִין if he knows he will find water. Basis: seif א.
- ⑤ Feeder and eater. The מַאֲכִיל needs no netila; the אוֹכֵל does — גְּזֵרָה שֶׁמָּא יִגַּע. Basis: seif ב.
- ⑥ Lifnei iver. Forbidden to feed — or even to hand the bread to — one who has not washed his hands: “וְלִפְנֵי עִוֵּר לֹא תִתֵּן מִכְשֹׁל” and assisting the hands of transgressors (cf. שמ״ז). Basis: seif ב.
⚠ This section presents the Habad conduct based on the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman קס״ג (the real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic ruling for a particular case.
