Level 4 — Daat HaRav (Alter Rebbe) — Siman

The Alter Rebbe’s way on עַל אֵיזֶה מִינֵי פַּת מְבָרְכִין : the whole loaf takes precedence ; wheat before barley ; a non-Jew’s or a Jew’s bread ; the measure of “hamotzi” ; pat haba’ah bekisanin (mezonot bread) ; and kevius se’ouda — in the Habad sensibility.

Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman קס״ח — עַל אֵיזֶה מִינֵי פַּת מְבָרְכִין, which unfolds in the Rav over כ״ג סְעִיפִים (twenty-three seifim) : from a whole loaf taking precedence over a piece and wheat before barley, to lechem mishneh made of two halves, to a non-Jew’s or a Jew’s bread, to the measure of “hamotzi,” to pat haba’ah bekisanin and the kinds of bread, and up to the kevius of the meal that decides between “hamotzi” and “borei minei mezonot.”

If a piece of bread and a whole loaf were brought before him — it is a mitzvah min hamuvchar to bless over the whole one, even if it is of coarse bread (kibar) and small, while the piece is of fine bread and larger than the whole one. And this is when all is of one species; but if the whole is of barley and the piece of wheat, even if it is a small slice — it takes precedence to bless over it, since wheat is mentioned earlier in the verse, among the seven species with which the Land of Israel was praised, and whatever precedes in this verse precedes for the blessing, as will be explained in siman רי״א. Nevertheless, a God-fearing person satisfies both: he places the slice inside the whole loaf and breaks from both together, since barley too is of the seven species and it is whole. But if the whole loaf is of rye (shifon), even though it is a kind of barley, since Scripture did not mention it explicitly like wheat — there is no need to place it at all together with the slice of wheat.

And all this is when he wishes to eat of both; but if he wishes to eat only of one of them — he blesses over it, and need not be concerned for the second, even though it is mentioned first in the verse and is more important and dearer to him, for on account of its precedence and importance he is in no way obligated to eat of it at all. And it goes without saying that if he wishes to eat the one that precedes in the verse, he need not be concerned for the second, whole one, since he is not obligated to eat of it on account of its wholeness. And even if he wishes to eat a slice that is not of the seven species — he is not obligated to eat of the other on account of its wholeness and importance.

If a person has two half-loaves and has no whole loaf for the lechem mishneh of Shabbat — he joins them together with a piece of wood that has the status of a vessel, or with anything that is not muktzeh, so that their joining is not visible; and its status is that of a whole loaf regarding lechem mishneh, just as its status is that of a whole loaf regarding an eiruv of courtyards (eiruvei chatzerot), as will be explained in siman שס״ו. But if he has a whole loaf — one may not rely on this, for one may say that it is regarded as whole only regarding an eiruv of courtyards, where a whole one was required only on account of enmity (so that one would not say: I give a whole and you give a slice), and when its joining is not visible there is no concern for this; but regarding lechem mishneh it is not regarded as whole by this joining, just as it is not regarded as one loaf regarding tumah and taharah by this joining. And on a weekday there is no need to join it at all.

Two small loaves (gluskaot) stuck to one another, which were baked and thus fused in the oven, and one of which was cut while the second remained whole — it is better to separate the cut piece from the whole one so that it appears whole, rather than leave it stuck to it although it thereby appears larger, for a small whole loaf precedes for the blessing a large slice. In any case, he shall not break from it at the place where it was stuck to its fellow, for there it appears like a slice, but he shall break from the whole place in it. And with an actual slice, however, there is no need to be careful to break from the whole side, for in any event it is a slice on the opposite side; unlike a small loaf separated from its fellow, which is whole, except that it appears like a slice at the place where it was stuck and then separated.

If two whole loaves or two slices were brought before him to eat, one large and one small — he blesses over the large one; and this, when both are of one species and equal in fineness. But if the small one is of fine bread and the large one of coarse bread — he blesses over the fine one. However, if both are of equal size and both fine, but one is whiter than the other — he blesses over the whiter one. But if the second, less white one is larger than this one — there is doubt which of the two precedes for the blessing. And all this in one species; but if one is of barley and one of spelt (kusmin), even though spelt is finer and cleaner than barley — he blesses over the barley, since barley is explicitly mentioned among the seven species, unlike spelt, which, although it is a kind of wheat and is among the seven species (as will be explained in siman ר״ח), was not mentioned explicitly by the text like barley. In what case? When both are equally dear to him; but if the spelt is dearer to him — some say he blesses over the dearer, and some say he blesses over the species of the seven that is in the verse, as will be explained in siman רי״א.

If a non-Jew’s bread and a Jew’s bread were brought before him to eat — he blesses over the Jew’s, even if he does not refrain from a non-Jew’s bread. And if the non-Jew’s bread is fine and the Jew’s bread coarse — he blesses over whichever he wishes, provided both are whole or both sliced, of equal size and of one species; and this when he does not refrain from a non-Jew’s bread, but one who does refrain from it — he shall not break from it in any way. And some say that even one who refrains from it may break from it if it is fine and dear to him, for the prohibition of a non-Jew’s bread is a light prohibition, and it was permitted on account of affection for the mitzvah, that he bless over what is dear to him; and one should remove the non-Jew’s bread from the table until after the blessing of “hamotzi.” And if a guest who does not refrain from a non-Jew’s bread is seated with him and has brought with him to the table a fine non-Jew’s bread — since the guest desires to eat the fine non-Jew’s bread, and he cannot eat without a blessing, and his blessing devolves upon the householder to discharge his obligation — it was permitted to the householder himself to break over it on account of affection for the mitzvah. And once it was permitted to him to break — it is permitted to him for this whole meal, for it is not the honor of Heaven that he bless over it and then withdraw from it. And although one need bless over the important and dear only when one wishes to eat of it, and this householder who refrains from a non-Jew’s bread does not wish to eat of it at all — nevertheless, since, were he not to refrain from it, it would be important and dear to him, and only the prohibition holds him back from it, once he finds a pretext by which he may eat it permissibly — as here, where he renders the mitzvah dear by it — the Sages permitted it to him, for all blessings of enjoyment depend on affection: it is upon the affection of his enjoyment that he blesses and praises the Holy One, blessed be He. But if, apart from the prohibition of a non-Jew’s bread, it is not more important to him than the Jew’s bread — he must bless over the Jew’s bread. And conversely: if the householder does not refrain from a non-Jew’s bread, and he intends to eat of the whole meal only the non-Jew’s bread because it is fine, while the members of his household eat a non-fine Jew’s bread — even though both breads are placed before him, he must break over the fine non-Jew’s one, since he intends to eat only of it and it is dear to him. And although the members of his household eat of the Jew’s — this is nothing, since he is the botzea.

The blessing of “hamotzi” has no measure: even if he wishes to eat only a crumb of less than a kezayit — he must bless “hamotzi.” They fixed the measure of a kezayit only for birkat hamazon and the other concluding blessings, but not for an initial blessing, for it is forbidden to enjoy this world, even the slightest amount, without a blessing.

In what case? With finished bread (lechem gamur), on which people are accustomed to fix their meal; but the kinds of bread that will be explained below, on which most people are not accustomed to fix their meal — one does not bless over them “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, but only “borei minei mezonot” and one berakha me’ein shalosh, unless he eats a measure on which others sometimes fix a meal; for the blessing “borei minei mezonot” also encompasses bread, which is food, and “hamotzi” was fixed over bread only on account of its importance, since it sustains the heart, and any bread on which one does not fix a meal — its importance lapses, unless there is enough in it to sustain. Likewise, the four blessings of birkat hamazon were instituted over it only on account of its importance, for from the Torah one berakha me’ein shalosh would have sufficed, since it was said in the Torah only once: “You shall eat, be satisfied, and bless Hashem your God for the good land He has given you,” and they derived from this verse: to bless for the food, for the land, and for the Sanctuary, and one blessing for all would have sufficed, except that the Sages instituted to bless for each one separately. And they instituted it only for bread on which one is accustomed to fix a meal; but the kinds of bread on which one is not accustomed to fix — even if he ate and was satisfied by them, so that he is obligated to bless after them from the Torah — one berakha me’ein shalosh of the Torah suffices for him; unless he ate a measure on which people fix a meal when they eat this kind of bread on occasion. But if most people do not fix a meal on it, even if he fixes his meal on it — his intent is annulled before that of most people. Nevertheless, if he fixed his meal on it and ate with it meat and other things, as one does at a meal of finished bread, until he was satisfied, and others too are accustomed to fix a meal on it if they eat other things with it as he did — he blesses “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon. Likewise, if he is satisfied by it alone and others too are accustomed to be satisfied by it when it is accompanied by some relish — he blesses “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon. And from here you learn that the measure of fixing a meal spoken of here is not the measure of a meal spoken of regarding eiruv, which is about three eggs, that being the smallest of the meals of healthy poor people and bearing the name of a meal, but not the meal of most healthy people (when they eat of it alone, without relish or other things), (but rather the measure of an omer per head for two meals). For otherwise, of what use was it to assess here a measure on which others fix a meal with some relish, since even with relish there is no name of a meal on less than three eggs of bread? For otherwise, why did they require for the two meals of eiruvei techumin the equivalent of two meals of bread, when, if less than that sufficed for two meals by means of a relish, it should suffice for eiruvei techumin, a fortiori from the relish of the bread of two meals with which one makes the eiruv — all the more so the bread eaten at these two meals. And if at the outset he intended to eat little and blessed “borei minei mezonot,” then reconsidered and ate a measure on which most people fix a meal — he shall bless after it birkat hamazon, even though he did not bless “hamotzi” before it, in the case where there was not enough for fixing a meal in what remained before him after he reconsidered. But if he reconsidered to eat further a measure of fixing a meal in addition to what he already ate — he must wash his hands and bless “hamotzi” first; and there is no need to first bless one berakha me’ein shalosh over what he already ate, for it joins with what he will eat to be discharged by birkat hamazon, since both are of one kind of bread; unlike one who eats, before a meal of finished bread, something that requires a berakha me’ein shalosh, which do not join one another to be discharged by birkat hamazon, but where one must first bless one berakha me’ein shalosh, as will be explained in siman ר״ח.

And these are the kinds of bread on which people are not accustomed to fix their meal: pat haba’ah bekisanin, la’hmaniyot, trokanin, and trita. Pat haba’ah bekisanin — some explain that it is bread made in the form of a pouch (kis), which is filled before its baking with honey, sugar, almonds, nuts, all kinds of fruit, or spices, even though the dough itself is kneaded with water alone, and it is baked in an oven or on a pan without any liquid (such as “apfel fladen” or “pavidla fladen”). Also of this kind is what is made on Purim: a wide, folded dough filled with sesame seeds. And even if the filling is very abundant, and the main intent in this bread is to eat the filling — nevertheless, the grain species is important and is not nullified by the filling, even if it is more abundant than it; therefore one blesses over it “borei minei mezonot,” and the filling too is discharged by this blessing, for it is subordinate to the grain species. And this is when one also intends to eat the grain species which is the dough containing the filling, even though this is not the main intent; but if one does not intend at all to eat the dough — like those thin wafers on which one places jam, where it is known that one does not intend at all to eat the dough, but only comes to stick the jam onto them so that the hands not be soiled by the honey — they are subordinate to the jam, and the blessing of the jam discharges them, even if he ate the jam first and the wafers remained alone. But in these countries where one places the jam on honey-cakes (called “lekakh fladen”), which are good to eat — then his intent is also upon eating the honey-cakes, and he blesses over them “borei minei mezonot,” which discharges the jam, subordinate to the grain species.

And any dough to which the filling is subordinate, even if he eats it alone after removing the filling from it — he blesses over it only “borei minei mezonot” and not “hamotzi,” since at the time of its baking it came bekisanin. But if he eats only the filling that he removed from it, alone — he blesses over it the blessing appropriate to it: “shehakol,” or “borei peri ha’adama,” or “borei peri ha’ets.” And all this when the filling is of fruit and the like, of things on which one is not accustomed to fix a meal, nor to accompany bread with, nor for food and satiety, but which are eaten as dessert and for pleasure, as will be explained in siman קע״ז; therefore most people are not accustomed to fix a meal on the bread filled with them either. But if the filling is of things on which people are accustomed to fix a meal to accompany bread, such as meat, fish, cheese, eggs, and vegetables (or on which one is accustomed to fix a meal for food and satiety, even if one does not accompany bread with them, such as cabbage, beets, and all the like among pot-dishes that are part of the essence of the meal), as will be explained there — this filling does not remove the bread filled with it from the status of finished bread on which all fix a meal, for most people do not refrain from fixing a meal on it either on account of the filling in it, since the filling too is fit to have a meal fixed on it to accompany bread (or for food and satiety). And some say there is no distinction between a filling of fruit and a filling of meat, cheese, and the like, and one always blesses “borei minei mezonot,” unless he eats a measure on which most people fix a meal. And the essential ruling is like the first view. And some explain that pat haba’ah bekisanin is bread kneaded in honey, milk, butter, fat, oil, egg-liquid, fruit-juice, wine, or other liquids, apart from water; and even if he mixed a little water into it, if the majority is of other liquids — one blesses over it “borei minei mezonot” and one berakha me’ein shalosh. And although all liquids do not remove the dough kneaded in them from the status of bread regarding challah, nevertheless people are not accustomed to fix a meal except on bread kneaded with water; therefore it does not have the importance of finished bread to bless “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, unless he eats a measure on which most people fix a meal. Likewise if he mixed into it much more spices than water, even if it was kneaded with water alone. And even if he mixed into it spices and honey more than flour, so that the honey and spices are almost the essence, and the flour serves only to bind and thicken them — the flour is not subordinate to them so as to bless over them the blessing appropriate to them, for besides that the flour binds and thickens the mixture, it also makes it fit and proper for eating, and ordinarily flour is put into this mixture for both purposes, to bind and to make fit; and since it is a grain species, it is important and is not nullified in the mixture, once it also comes to make it fit for eating; therefore one blesses over this mixture “borei minei mezonot.” And if he ate a measure of fixing a meal — he blesses birkat hamazon over this mixture (just as one blesses birkat hamazon over a mixture of grain flour and legume flour from which one made bread, if there is in the mixture a kezayit within the time of eating a peras of grain flour, as will be explained below). But a dough kneaded with water into which one mixed a little honey and spices, even though the taste of the honey and spices is perceptible in the dough — one does not bless over it “borei minei mezonot,” but “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, since the majority is water. Likewise with a little milk, butter, oil, fat, other liquids, and fruit-juice. Therefore one does well to bake cakes (called “schmaltz kuchen”) for the lechem mishneh, since there is in them only a little fat.

And some explain that pat haba bekisanin is bread kneaded even with water, and even unseasoned and unfilled, except that one makes it into dry cakes and nibbles them for pleasure and not to be satisfied (called “keakhlekh”). And as to the halakha, there is room to be lenient, in matters of rabbinic origin, according to all views, and especially in doubtful blessings, not to recite the four blessings of birkat hamazon over that for which, according to one view, one berakha me’ein shalosh suffices; for there is here no doubt of Torah origin, even if he ate enough to be satisfied, which obligates him in birkat hamazon from the Torah, since from the Torah one berakha me’ein shalosh always suffices. And once he blesses one berakha me’ein shalosh — he should not bless “hamotzi,” so that his blessings not contradict one another. Moreover, the blessing “borei minei mezonot” also encompasses finished bread, except that on account of its importance they removed it from the category of other food and fixed for it a blessing of its own; and anything of which it is not clear to us that it has the importance of finished bread — one does not remove it from its presumption, namely that it is certainly included in “mazon.” And although one who blesses “borei minei mezonot” over finished bread has not discharged his obligation, since, having risen in importance, its blessing changed — nevertheless, in a case of doubtful finished bread — he has discharged, for doubts on blessings of rabbinic origin are treated leniently. And even at the outset there is here no concern of a blessing in vain, for once the Sages were lenient in their words to discharge in a case of doubtful blessing — this is not a superfluous blessing, and it is certainly not in vain, since he discharges by it and is permitted to eat by it; he does not utter the Name of Heaven in vain nor falsely, for he blesses Hashem in truth, who created kinds of mezonot, and moreover this too is food. Only, when he does not discharge his obligation by this blessing — it is a superfluous blessing, and he bears the Name of Heaven in vain, but not falsely, even if he blessed over something that is not food at all. And any person of soul who wishes to be stringent upon himself — will not eat less than a measure of fixing a meal (of bread kneaded in liquids or fruit-juice and filled with fruit and the like) except within the meal, for food and satiety, as will be explained.

La’hmaniyot are thin wafers (called “niblesh,” and in some of these countries “blintzes”), made from a mixture of flour and water, in a very loose batter in a pot, poured onto wide vegetable leaves and baked in an oven with the leaves, or poured onto a pan without liquid, whose status is that of an oven, whether one heated it first and then poured on it, or poured on it and then heated it. The little liquid with which one greases the pan so that the dough not burn is not called liquid. But if there is liquid, even if he eats a measure of fixing a meal — he blesses “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh, for they never had the status of bread, neither at the time of their kneading since their batter was loose, nor at the time of their baking since they were fried in liquid, and there is no bread except the baked and not the fried. And even those whose batter is not very loose, so long as their batter is not thick — they have no status of bread at the time of kneading, nor at the time of baking if they were fried in liquid. But if they were baked in an oven or on a pan without liquid — it is finished bread, and one blesses over it “hamotzi” even if he did not eat a measure of fixing a meal, for since their batter is not very loose, people are accustomed to fix a meal on them sometimes, even though their batter is not entirely thick. And some say that those whose batter is very loose, one does not bless over them “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon when eating a measure of fixing a meal, except when they are not very thin wafers after baking, for example if one poured much onto the leaves or the pan until they became somewhat thick through baking, even though they are not entirely thick; but if, even after baking, they are very thin wafers, like those baked in a mold between two irons — fixing a meal is of no avail for them to bless “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, for they have no status of bread at all, even at the time of baking, since they are very thin wafers. And there is room to be concerned for their words, not to eat of them a measure of fixing a meal except within the meal, for food and satiety. Likewise with trita, namely that one takes flour and water, mixes them, and pours them onto the stove-top where it spreads and bakes — some say it has no status of bread at all, and even if he eats a measure of fixing a meal — he blesses “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh. (But trokanin, namely that one makes a hollow in the stove-top and puts into it flour and water mixed, even though their batter is very loose, nevertheless, since through baking they become thick — fixing a meal is effective for them to bless “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon as over finished bread; but for less than a measure of fixing a meal he blesses “borei minei mezonot,” since their batter is very loose and most people are not accustomed to fix a meal on them.)

And all these kinds of bread on which most people are not accustomed to fix a meal — if he comes to eat them within the meal as dessert and for pleasure, to lighten the heaviness of the food, as one is accustomed to nibble dry cakes at the end of the meal, or sweets — they are not discharged by the blessing of the bread, and one must bless over them first “borei minei mezonot,” just as one must bless over fruit eaten in dessert, as will be explained in siman קע״ז. Except that pat haba’ah bekisanin, because there was dispute about it, and some say that what others call pat haba’ah bekisanin is finished bread — therefore one should bless within the meal only over that which, according to all, is called pat haba’ah bekisanin. But if he comes to eat them for food and satiety — they then come on account of the meal and are discharged by the blessing of the bread, just as all pot-dishes eaten within the meal for food are discharged, even if one does not accompany bread with them, as will be explained there. And even the kinds of dough filled with fruit — one need not bless even over the fruit in them, as one blesses over the other fruit within the meal, for these fruits are subordinate to the dough, which is a grain species, and they are discharged with it by the blessing of the bread, since it comes within the meal for food and satiety, just as they are discharged with it by the blessing “borei minei mezonot” when one blesses over it outside the meal, or within the meal when it comes as dessert and for pleasure. And one should not be stringent and take some of the fruit from the dough to bless over it, for it is a blessing in vain if he also eats the dough. And even the kinds of dough whose batter is very loose and which were fried in liquid, which have no status of bread at all even when one eats of them a measure of fixing a meal — nevertheless they are discharged by the blessing of the bread when they come within the meal for food and satiety, just as all pot-dishes that come as a dish and as food are discharged.

But anything whose batter is entirely thick, which has the status of bread at the time of kneading — some say that even if he softened it with water, made it into fritters (sufganin), and boiled it in water or fried it in liquid — the status of bread was not removed from it regarding “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, just as it was not removed from it regarding challah. And if he eats it within the meal — it is discharged by the blessing of the bread like any other finished bread, even if he eats it as dessert and for pleasure only. And some say that the status of bread was removed from it through boiling or frying, and even if he eats of it a measure of fixing a meal — he blesses only “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh, even if it is in such a manner that it is called bread regarding challah, for example if, at the time of kneading, he did not intend to boil or fry it and then reconsidered, so that it is obligated in challah; for regarding challah everything follows the rolling of the flour in water, at which point the obligation of challah applies — therefore, since it had the status of bread at the time of kneading, its batter being thick, the obligation of challah applied at once and no longer lapsed through boiling and frying; but regarding “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, everything follows the baking in the oven, at which point it becomes fit for eating, and anything not baked in an oven or on a pan without liquid is not called bread. And if he ate it within the meal as dessert and for pleasure — it is not discharged by the blessing of the bread. And a God-fearing person satisfies both views, and will eat it only within the meal, for food and satiety. But the custom is to be lenient like the last view (for so is the essential ruling).

And even according to the first view, some say that one need bless “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon only when one eats a measure of fixing a meal, for otherwise the blessing “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh suffices, as for pat haba’ah bekisanin, which is also finished bread regarding challah and over which, nevertheless, since people are not accustomed to fix a meal on it, one does not bless “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon; likewise, over the kinds of fried food too one is not accustomed to fix a meal (and according to their words, even for the first view, one must bless over them “borei minei mezonot” within the meal if one eats a little of them as dessert and for pleasure). And some disagree (and say that they are not similar) to pat haba’ah bekisanin, which is also finished bread according to those who say it is bread kneaded in liquids or fruit-juice; but the kinds of fried food which, at the time of their kneading, were finished bread — the name of finished bread was not removed from them through frying or boiling regarding “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, just as it was not removed from them regarding challah according to the first view. But according to those who say that pat haba’ah bekisanin is finished bread kneaded with water alone, except that one afterward filled it with honey or with kinds of fruit, or made from it thin dry cakes that one nibbles for pleasure — although at the time of kneading it was finished bread, and they were even baked in an oven like finished bread — nevertheless one does not bless over them “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, since most people are not accustomed to fix a meal on them; all the more so a dough kneaded with water and then boiled or fried in liquid or in honey, for surely frying in honey is no less than a filling of honey in bread baked in an oven that removes it from the status of finished bread, since the filling is only inside, whereas in frying the whole dough is steeped in honey and absorbed by it throughout, and it was also not baked in an oven at all. And it has already been explained above that, by law, there is room to be lenient in matters of rabbinic origin, and all the more so here where the custom is to be lenient in every case.

And all this is when the dough retains an appearance of bread (toar lechem) after the frying and boiling, for example if it was baked on a pan, except that there was a little water in which it cooked during its baking, or a little liquid in which it was fried during its baking, like pashtida, fladen, and kreplech. Except that pashtida and fladen filled with meat and cheese — some say they are pat haba’ah bekisanin even if they were baked in an oven, and one does not bless over them “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon without fixing a meal, according to all. And if one eats them within the meal — they are discharged by the blessing of the bread even if they are fried, because they come as a dish and as food, and not as dessert and for pleasure, since they are filled with meat and cheese and not with fruit. But the kinds of dough cooked in a pot (like “verimzlekh” in the Ashkenazi tongue, called in our land “lokshen,” likewise kreplech in places where they do not fry them at all on a pan containing liquid, but boil them first and then fry them) — they have no appearance of bread at all, and one need not be stringent about them at all not to eat them without “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, even with fixing a meal, and even if they are large pieces each having a kezayit and more.

In what case? With a dough that was boiled; but finished bread that was boiled — its status of bread was not nullified through boiling, even according to the last view, nor even through frying, and one blesses over it “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon even without fixing a meal, and even if it disintegrated in the boiling until there remains of each slice only a kezayit. But a slice of less than a kezayit, whether it was a large slice divided in the boiling, or was less than a kezayit before it was boiled — it left the status of bread through boiling regarding the blessing, even if it appears that it has an appearance of bread, for once it was boiled it is not regarded as having an appearance of bread, and he blesses “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh, even if he eats a measure of fixing a meal from crumbs of less than a kezayit. And even if they stuck together through the boiling and there is now a kezayit and more in each piece, whereas before the boiling there was not in each one, separately, a kezayit. And this is when they were boiled in a first vessel; but if he put them in a bowl and poured onto them from a first vessel — it depends on the controversy regarding pouring (irui), namely whether it cooks like a first vessel or not. Therefore there is room to refrain from eating them except within the meal if it appears that they have an appearance of bread, that is, that it is recognizable and known that it is bread. But if the appearance of bread has gone from them through the pouring, and even crumbs steeped in cold water from which the appearance of bread has gone through this steeping — he blesses over them “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh, even if he eats a measure of fixing a meal, for they have already been nullified and left the status of bread entirely, since there is no kezayit in each one and also no appearance of bread. And once the water whitens on account of the crumbs — the appearance of bread has already gone from them. And the same law applies to pieces of bread that one dries on coals and steeps in beer, for if there is no kezayit in each and no appearance of bread — one blesses over them “borei minei mezonot.”

Likewise, crumbs of bread that one joins and sticks together in a bowl with honey, milk, or broth, if there is no longer an appearance of bread on them because of this, and there is not in each one, separately, a kezayit — one does not bless over them “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon even with fixing a meal, as with boiling and frying according to the last view explained above, which is the essential ruling. But crumbs of bread that are not joined together, even if they have no appearance of bread because they are very fine — one blesses over them “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon even without fixing a meal; even over a single crumb fine as flour one blesses “hamotzi,” for once it is bread in itself, without any admixture of liquid within it joining and sticking it — it never leaves the status of bread. And even if he puts fine crumbs into some liquid for a moment to soften them, and they do not remain in it long enough for the appearance of bread to go from them through this steeping — he blesses over them “hamotzi,” even though they have no appearance of bread because they are very fine. And even if he puts them in a hot liquid from which the hand recoils, if it is a second vessel that does not cook.

Likewise, if he crumbled the bread into fine crumbs like flour and then kneaded them together again, even if they were first steeped in water until the appearance of bread went from them, once there is now in them a kezayit — he must bless over it “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon, for with a kezayit no appearance of bread is required. And even if he kneaded them with boiling water of a second vessel, and even if he kneaded them in liquids and fruit-juice — they do not have the law of pat haba’ah bekisanin, for since they were finished bread from the outset, they never leave the status of bread, unless there is not in each one a kezayit (and they are not kneaded together in the manner of a kneading, but only joined by some liquid that sticks them to one another, or that they were steeped in it until the appearance of bread went from them). And even if, after the kneading, he fried them in liquid, or even boiled them in a pot — they were not nullified from the status of bread, just as a kezayit of finished bread is not nullified from the status of bread through frying and boiling. Nevertheless, if he mixed flour into them and fried them in oil or other liquids — there is room to doubt whether we follow the majority (which is the flour and the fat), and one does not bless over them “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon even with fixing a meal. Likewise, if he kneaded them with fat and much flour among them, if we follow the flour, he will bless “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon only with a measure of fixing a meal after baking, like the law of flour kneaded in fat, liquids, or fruit-juice and baked in an oven; for it may be that, just as a grain species is important and is not nullified by a majority among other species, so finished bread is not nullified by a majority on account of its importance, even in flour of a grain species. But if he kneaded them with boiling water of a first vessel, since they left the status of bread at the time they were boiled in the boiling water and there was no kezayit in each crumb, their law is that of kneaded flour, over which one blesses “borei minei mezonot” after frying even if there is in it a kezayit.

There is one who says that one who steeps his bread in red wine, since its form has been altered thereby — the appearance of bread has been removed from it, and if there is not in each slice a kezayit — he blesses “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh, even if he eats a measure of fixing a meal. And one also need not bless “borei peri hagafen” over the wine absorbed in the bread, since it is subordinate to it. Likewise, one who steeps bread over which one blesses “borei minei mezonot” in brandy or other liquids — need not bless over the liquids absorbed in it. But if he blessed over the bread “hamotzi” — he need not bless at all over the other liquids, even in the manner of drinking, for one does not bless over a drink within the meal, as will be explained in siman רי״ב. Likewise, when one puts wine in the bowl with the salt to dip the meat in it — one need not bless over the wine, since it is subordinate to the meat, and the meat has already been discharged by the blessing “hamotzi,” as will be explained in siman קע״ז.

Flour that one scalded with boiling water and then made from it bread and baked it in an oven or on a pan without liquid — it is finished bread, and one blesses over it “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon. And even if its batter was loose, having been made with boiling water, once one afterward baked it without liquid — it became finished bread (unless its batter was very loose, for then, even without scalding in boiling water, one blesses over it “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon only with a measure of fixing a meal, as was explained above).

A dough that one bakes on a spit and continually smears with oil, fat, egg-liquid, or fruit-juice — it has no status of bread at all, and one blesses over it “borei minei mezonot” and me’ein shalosh (even with fixing a meal). But finished bread that one roasts on a spit, even if one smears it with oil — it never leaves the status of bread, as was explained above.

The Habad practical conduct

Points of conduct flowing directly from siman קס״ח in the Alter Rebbe’s and Habad sensibility — presented at the level of the principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of the cases.

For the Habad Hassid — Siman

  • ① Seif א. A whole loaf takes precedence over a piece, even a small one; but wheat (of the seven species) precedes barley, even as a slice.
  • ② Seif ב. One is not obligated to eat of both: one blesses over the one he wishes to eat.
  • ③ Seif ג. Two half-loaves joined discreetly (by an object) count as whole for lechem mishneh when no whole loaf is at hand.
  • ④ Seif ד. Two small baked loaves stuck together: better to separate them; do not break at the joining spot.
  • ⑤ Seif ה. The larger, the finer, the whiter takes precedence; barley (named) before spelt.
  • ⑥ Seif ו. A Jew’s bread takes precedence; one who refrains from a non-Jew’s bread does not break over it (except for a guest).
  • ⑦ Seif ז. “Hamotzi” has no minimum measure — even less than a kezayit requires it.
  • ⑧ Seif ח. “Hamotzi” + birkat hamazon only over what one fixes a meal on; otherwise “mezonot” and me’ein shalosh.
  • ⑨ Seif ט. Pat haba’ah bekisanin (filled dough) — “mezonot,” and the filling is discharged with it.
  • ⑩ Seif י. Dough whose filling is subordinate — “mezonot” even alone; the filling alone keeps its own blessing.
  • ⑪ Seif יא. 2nd view: dough kneaded in liquids (other than water) — “mezonot.”
  • ⑫ Seif יב. 3rd view: dry cakes one nibbles; in doubt, be lenient (safek berakhot lehakel).
  • ⑬ Seif יג. La’hmaniyot, trita, trokanin — per the batter and baking: “mezonot” or “hamotzi.”
  • ⑭ Seif יד. Within the meal: as dessert “mezonot”; for satiety, discharged by the bread’s blessing.
  • ⑮ Seif טו. Thick dough boiled or fried — a dispute; the God-fearing eat it only within the meal.
  • ⑯ Seif טז. Fried foods: one does not fix a meal on them; the custom is lenient in every case.
  • ⑰ Seif יז. Toar lechem: pashtida/fladen (meat, cheese) discharged within the meal; lokshen/kreplech have no appearance of bread.
  • ⑱ Seif יח. Already-finished bread boiled — “hamotzi” with a kezayit; crumbs < kezayit without bread-appearance — “mezonot.”
  • ⑲ Seif יט. Crumbs rejoined without bread-appearance — “mezonot”; separate ones — “hamotzi,” even fine.
  • ⑳ Seif כ. Crumbs re-kneaded into a kezayit — “hamotzi” and birkat hamazon.
  • ㉑ Seif כא. Bread steeped in red wine (< kezayit) — “mezonot”; the absorbed wine is subordinate.
  • ㉒ Seif כב. Flour scalded then baked without liquid — finished bread (“hamotzi”).
  • ㉓ Seif כג. Dough on a spit, continually smeared — “mezonot”; but already-finished bread roasted stays “hamotzi.”
