Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.
For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman In the Rav it is set out in a single seif (סָעִיף אֶחָד) weaving three planes : the מֶרְחָץ חָדָשׁ (the name alone does not forbid), the three rooms of the used bathhouse — חִיצוֹן, אֶמְצָעִי, פְּנִימִי — each with its regime, and finally the שֵׁם שָׁלוֹם, the פְּסַק דִּין without a טַעַם, and the answering of אָמֵן.

A new bathhouse in which one has not yet washed — מֻתָּר לִקְרוֹת בּוֹ, for the mere name (קְרִיאַת שֵׁם « bathhouse ») does not forbid it as it forbids the בֵּית הַכִּסֵּא, which is מָאוּס בְּיוֹתֵר (inherently repulsive). A used bathhouse (יָשָׁן) : in the outer room, where all stand dressed — מֻתָּר לִקְרוֹת ק״ש וּלְהִתְפַּלֵּל. In the middle room, where some are dressed and some naked — יֵשׁ שָׁם שְׁאִילַת שָׁלוֹם, but not ק״ש, תְּפִלָּה or דִּבְרֵי תּוֹרָה, even at a moment when no one there is naked ; yet it is permitted to think Torah (לְהַרְהֵר) even when naked people are present, and to rule a din provided one does not state its טַעַם — for that is only a הִרְהוּר, the reason kept in the heart. In the inner room, where all are naked — אֲפִלּוּ שְׁאִילַת שָׁלוֹם אָסוּר, for « שָׁלוֹם » is a name of the Holy One, blessed be He (״וַיִּקְרָא לוֹ ה׳ שָׁלוֹם״) ; likewise one may not greet another בִּמְבוֹאוֹת הַמְטֻנָּפוֹת. A man named Shalom — יֵשׁ אוֹסְרִין to call him by name except in a foreign tongue (לע״ז), וְיֵשׁ מַתִּירִין since one intends only the person’s name ; and בְּדִבְרֵי סוֹפְרִים one follows the lenient view (וְכֵן נוֹהֲגִין). It is forbidden to answer אָמֵן there or to think anything holy ; and if one is asked a דְּבַר הֲלָכָה — one may not even reply « אֵין מְשִׁיבִין בַּמֶּרְחָץ » (one does not answer in the bathhouse), but in the middle room it is permitted to say so.

The yesod : may one recite in a bathhouse ?
The Alter Rebbe’s reading of this siman unfolds along four planes. First the מֶרְחָץ חָדָשׁ — the name alone does not forbid. Then the בֵּית הַחִיצוֹן — all dressed, one recites. Then the בֵּית הָאֶמְצָעִי — the mixed space where holy speech yields but thought remains. Finally the בֵּית הַפְּנִימִי — all naked, where even the שָׁלוֹם is held back.
The new bathhouse — the name alone does not forbid
The principle. מֶרְחָץ חָדָשׁ שֶׁלֹּא רָחֲצוּ בּוֹ — מֻתָּר לִקְרוֹת בּוֹ ; the קְרִיאַת שֵׁם « bathhouse » does not forbid it as with the בֵּית הַכִּסֵּא, שֶׁהוּא מָאוּס בְּיוֹתֵר (single seif).
The consequence. What forbids a place is its repulsive reality, not its label. Cf. siman 76 (צואה).
The outer room — all dressed
The principle.
The consequence. A « used » bathhouse is not forbidden as a whole ; all depends on the real state of the room. Cf. siman 79 (ריח רע).
The middle room — speech versus thought
The principle.
The consequence. Holy speech is forbidden, thought remains permitted — a psak without its reason equals a הִרְהוּר. Cf. siman 81 (מי רגלים).
The inner room — the name « Shalom »
The principle.
The consequence. A man named Shalom — הַלֵּךְ אַחַר הַמֵּקֵל (וְכֵן נוֹהֲגִין) ; a halakhic question — even « אֵין מְשִׁיבִין בַּמֶּרְחָץ » is not said here, but is said in the middle room.
A note for study. The scope of this siman — the מֶרְחָץ חָדָשׁ, the three rooms and the שֵׁם שָׁלוֹם — bears on daily conduct in places of bathing. This page presents it at the level of the principle attested in the Rav’s text, adding nothing invented. For deep study and personal conduct, study with a Habad Rav and in the texts themselves.

The force of the Alter Rebbe’s psak
A comparison of the Alter Rebbe’s way with those of the Mehaber, the Mishna Beroura (משנה ברורה) and the Aroukh haShulchan (ערוך השולחן) on the key points of siman פ״ד. The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch (שולחן ערוך הרב) row is highlighted — it shows the Rav’s own sensibility as it emerges from his single seif.

The lines of force of the Rav’s way on this siman
Three orientations that mark the Alter Rebbe’s sensibility on this siman. Each follows the structure : principle of the siman → the Rav’s reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the Rav’s real text (§1).
Line 1 — a place is judged by its reality
Principle of the siman : מֶרְחָץ חָדָשׁ מֻתָּר, שֶׁאֵין קְרִיאַת שֵׁם אוֹסַרְתּוֹ (סעיף א).
The Rav’s reading : what forbids is the מָאוּס בְּיוֹתֵר of the בֵּית הַכִּסֵּא, not the name « bathhouse ». Cf. siman 76.
Practical consequence : assess the place by its real state — a new, unused bathhouse does not carry the status of a used one.
Line 2 — a gradation according to nakedness
Principle of the siman : חִיצוֹן (לְבוּשִׁים) — ק״ש ; אֶמְצָעִי (מְעֹרָב) — שָׁלוֹם ; פְּנִימִי (עֲרֻמִּים) — אָסוּר (סעיף א).
The Rav’s reading : three rooms, three regimes ; the presence of עֲרֻמִּים fixes the status, not mere belonging to the bathhouse. Cf. siman 79.
Practical consequence : in the middle room, ק״ש is forbidden even at a moment when no one is naked.
Line 3 — thought versus speech
Principle of the siman : מֻתָּר לְהַרְהֵר וְלִפְסֹק דִּין בְּלֹא טַעַם ; בַּפְּנִימִי אֲפִלּוּ שָׁלוֹם וְאָמֵן אָסוּר (סעיף א).
The Rav’s reading : the dividing line is דִּבּוּר ; a psak stripped of its טַעַם stays in the heart, like a הִרְהוּר. Cf. siman 81.
Practical consequence : thinking Torah is permitted everywhere ; saying it aloud follows the status of the room.
Habad practice
Points of conduct that follow directly from siman פ״ד in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and Habad — presented at the level of the principle, deferring to the Rav for the detail of cases.
For the Habad Hassid — Siman
A new bathhouse in which one has not yet washed — מֻתָּר to read and to pray ; the name alone does not forbid. Basis : SA HaRav פ״ד single seif.
Outer room, all dressed — מֻתָּר ק״ש וּתְפִלָּה. Basis : SA HaRav פ״ד single seif.
Mixed room — שְׁאִילַת שָׁלוֹם permitted ; ק״ש, תְּפִלָּה and דִּבְרֵי תּוֹרָה forbidden, even if no one is naked ; לְהַרְהֵר and פְּסַק דִּין בְּלֹא טַעַם permitted. Basis : SA HaRav פ״ד single seif.
All naked — even שְׁאִילַת שָׁלוֹם forbidden (שֵׁם ה׳) ; forbidden to answer אָמֵן or to think a דָּבָר שֶׁבִּקְדֻשָּׁה. Basis : SA HaRav פ״ד single seif.
In the inner room it is forbidden even to say « אֵין מְשִׁיבִין בַּמֶּרְחָץ » ; in the middle room it is permitted to say so. A man named Shalom — הַלֵּךְ אַחַר הַמֵּקֵל (וְכֵן נוֹהֲגִין). Basis : SA HaRav פ״ד single seif.
⚠ This section presents Habad conduct grounded in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman פ״ד (real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — the מֶרְחָץ, the rooms, the שֵׁם שָׁלוֹם — consult your Rav, and for Habad, a Habad Rav.
