Level 4 — Daat HaRav (Alter Rebbe) — Siman

The Alter Rebbe’s way on the הַנִּצְרָךְ לִנְקָבָיו וְדִין רְחִיצָה לַתְּפִלָּה : הַנִּצְרָךְ לִנְקָבָיו — אַל יִתְפַּלֵּל ; the הֲכָנוֹת and נְטִילַת יָדַיִם ; the מָקוֹם מְטֻנָּף and the ד׳ אַמּוֹת distance ; and צְדָקָה קֹדֶם תְּפִלָּה — in the Habad sensibility.

Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman In the Rav it unfolds over י׳ סְעִיפִים (ten seifim) : the הַנִּצְרָךְ לִנְקָבָיו and נְקִיּוּת הַגּוּף, the הֲכָנוֹת and נְטִילַת יָדַיִם, the מָקוֹם מְטֻנָּף and the ד׳ אַמּוֹת distance, and צְדָקָה קֹדֶם תְּפִלָּה.

The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.92), followed by our English translation. The siman has ten seifim (י׳ סְעִיפִים ; seif k → .92.k).

One who needs to relieve himself does not pray until he has (« הִכּוֹן לִקְרַאת אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל ») ; if he prayed — תְּפִלָּתוֹ תּוֹעֵבָה and he repeats. This applies to גדולים ; for קטנים he does not repeat. And even for גדולים he repeats only if he could not hold himself שִׁעוּר הִלּוּךְ פַּרְסָה ; if he could — יָצָא after the fact. But לכתחילה one does not pray בְּגוּף מְשֻׁקָּץ, even at the cost of the prayer-time passing ; even דברי תורה are forbidden while the body is מְשֻׁקָּץ. And יֵשׁ מי who permits even לכתחילה if he can hold himself שִׁעוּר פַּרְסָה, and one may rely on this if the time would otherwise pass.

An urge mid-prayer. All this when the need arose before praying ; but if an urge arises during the עמידה — if he can hold out until the end he does so and does not interrupt, even for קטנים, בְאֶמְצַע תְּפִלַּת י״ח ; if he cannot — he interrupts for גדולים, not for קטנים. Even מים שותתין על ברכיו — he waits until they cease and resumes, without needing to move away (סימן ע״ח). In ק״ש and its berakhot he may step aside and urinate. But where there is משום בַל תְּשַׁקְּצוּ he interrupts the ק״ש — not the עמידה, interrupted only for danger to life (סימן ק״ד), all the more so for a rabbinic prohibition.

The yesod : bodily cleanliness before tefila

The Alter Rebbe’s reading of this siman unfolds along four axes. First the הַנִּצְרָךְ לִנְקָבָיו and נְקִיּוּת הַגּוּף. Then the הֲכָנוֹת and נְטִילַת יָדַיִם. Then the מָקוֹם מְטֻנָּף and the ד׳ אַמּוֹת distance.

The bodily need — preparing for prayer

The principle. One who needs to relieve himself does not pray (« הִכּוֹן לִקְרַאת אֱלֹהֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל ») ; if he prayed — תְּפִלָּתוֹ תּוֹעֵבָה and he repeats, unless he could hold himself שִׁעוּר פַּרְסָה (seif א).

The consequence. לכתחילה one does not pray בְּגוּף מְשֻׁקָּץ, and an urge arising mid-prayer — he holds out if able (seif ב). Cf. siman 91.

Washing the hands and the preparations

The principle. He removes כִּיחוֹ וְנִיעוֹ and washes his hands even after נטילת שחרית, without a ברכה (seif ג). Without water — up to a פרסה ahead, a מיל behind, otherwise he cleans בעפר (seif ד).

The consequence. הֶסַּח הַדַּעַת disqualifies the hands — וכן עיקר (seif ה) ; but for תלמוד תורה a mere נִקָּיוֹן suffices (seif ו).

Dirty places and the four-cubit distance

The principle. מָקוֹם מְטֻנָּף = the covered parts (מלמולי זיעה) ; ear-wax and nasal mucus — one touches them in prayer only על ידי בגד (seif ז).

The consequence. The מַשְׁתִּין and the רוֹקֵק — שִׁעוּר ד׳ אַמּוֹת before and after prayer ; spontaneous spittle is permitted (seifim ח-ט). Cf. siman 93.

Tzedakah before prayer

The principle.

The consequence. Preparation for prayer is not only bodily — it is also of the heart, through the צדקה that precedes the encounter.

A note for study. The scope of this siman — the נְקִיּוּת, the נְטִילַת יָדַיִם and the הַרְחָקוֹת — bears on the daily preparation for תפילה. This page presents it at the level of the principle attested in the Rav’s text, adding nothing invented. For deep study and personal conduct, study with a Habad Rav and in the texts themselves.

The lines of force of the Rav’s way on this siman

Three orientations that mark the Alter Rebbe’s sensibility on this siman. Each follows the structure : principle of the siman → the Rav’s reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the Rav’s real text (§1).

Line 1 — cleanliness as a condition

Principle of the siman : הַנִּצְרָךְ לִנְקָבָיו אַל יִתְפַּלֵּל ; גּוּף מְשֻׁקָּץ — לֹא לְכַתְּחִלָּה (seifim א-ב).

The Rav’s reading : the נקיות of the body is a תנאי of תפילה, not a mere adornment.

Line 2 — netilat yadaim and heseach hadaat

Principle of the siman : יִרְחַץ יָדָיו אַף אַחַר שַׁחֲרִית בְּלֹא בְּרָכָה ; הֶסַּח הַדַּעַת פּוֹסֵל (seifim ג-ה).

The Rav’s reading : וכן עיקר that הֶסַּח הַדַּעַת requires a fresh נִקָּיוֹן, the hands being עַסְקָנִיּוֹת.

Line 3 — the distances and the cleanliness of the place

Principle of the siman : מָקוֹם מְטֻנָּף עַל יְדֵי בֶּגֶד ; מַשְׁתִּין וְרוֹקֵק — ד׳ אַמּוֹת (seifim ז-ט).

The Rav’s reading : the הרחקות guard the כבוד of prayer ; the spontaneous (רֹק שֶׁנִּזְדַּמֵּן) is eased.

Habad practice

Points of conduct that follow directly from siman צ״ב in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and Habad — presented at the level of the principle, deferring to the Rav for the detail of cases.

For the Habad Hassid — Siman

Relieve oneself before praying ; a body that is מְשֻׁקָּץ — no תפילה, nor even דברי תורה. Basis : SA HaRav צ״ב seif א.
An urge arising during prayer — hold out if possible ; משום ״בַּל תְּשַׁקְּצוּ״ one interrupts the ק״ש, never the עמידה.
Remove כִּיחוֹ וְנִיעוֹ, wash the hands even after שחרית, without a ברכה ; without water — נִקָּיוֹן בעפר. Basis : SA HaRav צ״ב seifim ג-ה.
Do not touch the covered parts nor ear-wax and nasal mucus during prayer,
שִׁעוּר ד׳ אַמּוֹת for the מַשְׁתִּין and the רוֹקֵק ; and טוֹב לִתֵּן צְדָקָה קֹדֶם תְּפִלָּה (« אֲנִי בְּצֶדֶק אֶחֱזֶה פָנֶיךָ »). Basis : SA HaRav צ״ב seifim ח-י.

⚠ This section presents Habad conduct grounded in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman צ״ב (real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — the נְקִיּוּת, the נְטִילַת יָדַיִם, the הַרְחָקוֹת — consult your Rav, and for Habad, a Habad Rav.
