Why a Level 4 dedicated to the Alter Rebbe? The Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mechaber (מחבר) — it is a standalone, complete Shulchan Aruch, authored by the Alter Rebbe. Its singularity: it combines halacha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in a single work, and rules with unique Talmudic rigor.
For Chabad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון. This page gathers, for siman רע״ו, the Rav's full text, his originality, and the divrei haRebbe that illuminate the subject.

Laws of a ner that an akum (non-Jew) kindled on Shabbos — and it contains 17 seifim:
An akum who kindled the ner for a Yisrael — it is forbidden for any person to use its light on Shabbos, even for one for whose sake it was not kindled, for the Chachamim were stringent in this, since a complete melachah of the Torah (melachah gemurah) was performed on Shabbos for the sake of a Yisrael. Likewise, if he kindled a bonfire (medurah) of wood for the sake of a Yisrael — it is forbidden for any Yisrael to warm himself by it on Shabbos.
And even if the akum intended for his own benefit — for example the Yisrael hired him and fixed for him such-and-such wages for each day that he would kindle nerot for him and light a medurah, or fixed him a price for each kindling and each lighting (hav'arah), and did not command him to kindle and light on Shabbos, but rather he acts of his own accord in order to increase his wages — even so it is forbidden to derive benefit from his melachah on Shabbos. For since the very body of the Yisrael will derive benefit on Shabbos from the body of the melachah, the essential melachah is performed on Shabbos for his sake: the akum does not derive benefit from the body of the melachah but only from its wage, and he intends in performing the body of the melachah on Shabbos in order that the Yisrael may derive benefit from it on Shabbos. It turns out that the performance of the Shabbos melachah is for him when he derives benefit from it on Shabbos; and there is room to issue a decree lest he say to him to do it on Shabbos for his benefit, if it were permitted to him to derive benefit from it when its essential performance is for his benefit:
In any event, they did not impose on the Yisrael to leave his house when the akum kindles a ner for him of his own accord, even though he has benefit from the light of the ner — only that he shall not make any use of its light; and likewise for the medurah.
And the same applies if he is lodging at an inn (malon) in an akum's house — he does not need to leave it when the akum kindles a ner for him: since he is staying there — it becomes like his house and it is a bother for him to leave it. And if he wishes to perform a middas chassidus — let him turn his face away from the light of the ner to show that he does not desire it:
In any event, if the ner belongs to the Yisrael — he must protest him a priori so that he not kindle for him, for the reason explained in siman 252, and likewise for a medurah from wood of the Yisrael.
(And if he did not take heed and kindled it — it is permitted for him to derive benefit and to use its light, provided that he not act with ha'aramah in his protest.)
And if he protested against the akum who serves in his house and he did not heed (even though it is permitted for him to use the light of the ner against which he has protested, nevertheless) — he is obligated to expel from his house this akum who does not listen to him and who kindles or lights for his sake on Shabbos.
And although he intends for his own benefit in order to increase the wages fixed for him for each kindling and lighting, and thus he is like a contractor (kablan) whom one does not need to protest, even when he performs melachah with the Yisrael's objects, as has been explained there — nevertheless it is forbidden to allow him to do it in his house, because of mar'is ayin, as has been explained there:
But if the ner or the wood belong to the akum — he need not protest him when he acts of his own accord, even though he did not fix him wages, for the reason explained there.
And even within the house of the Yisrael, we do not suspect mar'is ayin when the melachah is performed with the akum's objects, for the reason that will be explained in siman 325:
In any event, it is permitted for him to protest against him. Likewise it is permitted to protest against an akum who comes to add his own oil into the burning ner, and there is no concern of extinguishing on the grounds that his protest brings about a swifter extinguishing. And when he has protested against an akum who is kindling with his own — whether in his house or in the akum's house — and he did not heed: it is permitted for him to use its light, provided that he not act with ha'aramah in his protest:

And all this is when he kindled for the sake of a Yisrael. But if he kindled for his own sake or for the sake of another akum — it is permitted for any Yisrael to use its light even if the ner belongs to a Yisrael, for we do not decree lest one say to the akum to kindle for himself or for another akum.
Likewise, if he kindled for the need of a sick person — even one not in danger — or for the need of small children (whose law is like that of a sick person not in danger in every respect) — it is permitted for the healthy to use its light, since there is no decree here lest one say to the akum to kindle for the sick, because that is a thing permitted even a priori:

Yisraelim and akumim seated together, and an akum came and kindled a ner for them: if the majority of the company are akumim — it is permitted to use its light. And if the majority are Yisraelim — it is forbidden to use its light, for ordinarily the one who kindles intends for the majority. And if half are Yisraelim and half akumim — it is also forbidden, for ordinarily he intends for the need of both. And even if it is in doubt for which of them he kindles — we follow the stringent course in this doubt.
And all this is when he kindles without specification, for ordinarily his intention is for the diners; but if there is evidence that he kindles for himself — for example, we see that he uses its light (immediately) — even though the majority are Yisraelim, it is permitted to use its light. And likewise if there is evidence that he kindles for another akum.
But if there is evidence that he kindles for the need of a Yisrael and for the need of an akum, even though the majority are akumim — it is forbidden:

In some places many have the custom to be lenient regarding amirah le-akum (saying to a non-Jew) to kindle nerot for the need of a meal when the nerot have gone out and it is impossible to eat in the dark. And some have found a justification for the Chachamim not having protested against them: because they rely on the one who says that they did not decree concerning the shvus of amirah le-akum in the case of a mitzvah, even to tell him to perform a complete melachah of the Torah.
Nevertheless, if one ner is still burning and they can eat by it — it is forbidden to tell an akum to kindle another, for there is not so much of a mitzvah here to override the shvus of amirah le-akum on its account.
(And if he kindled of his own accord — it is permitted to benefit from it even after the first has gone out, since oneg Shabbos depends on this, as will be explained.)
But every person must be stringent with himself not to tell an akum to kindle a ner even though he sits in the dark and cannot eat the Shabbos meal, because many are those who say that they did not permit a shvus in the case of a mitzvah except a shvus de-shvus, as will be explained in siman 307 — and their words are the main view. Therefore one should not be lenient in this at all, even for a great need; but one should not protest against those who are lenient, for it is better that they be unintentional transgressors than intentional ones:
But to tell the akum to bring him a ner already kindled elsewhere — some permit even if it is possible to manage without it, whether of wax-tallow or of oil, since the moving (tiltul) of the ner is forbidden only because it is muktzeh, as will be explained in siman 279; and any muktzeh may be moved by a tiltul min ha-tzad (indirect moving), as will be explained in siman 311. And since the Yisrael himself could have brought the ner here permissibly by a tiltul min ha-tzad — for example with the backs of his hands, or between the joints of his arms, and the like — when the akum brings it in a forbidden way, by a complete moving, there is nothing to it, for they forbade having an akum do on Shabbos only things that the Yisrael has no permitted way at all to do himself.
And one should not teach this leniency except to bnei Torah; but for amei ha-aretz one should not permit it, lest they become accustomed to amirah le-akum, and compare one thing to another, and be more lenient:

In what does this apply? When he brings it here in order to derive benefit here from its light, or because he needs the place where the ner was standing; but it is forbidden to have it moved by an akum in order to put it away so that it not be stolen, for this moving is for the need of the ner, which is muktzeh, and a Yisrael has no permission to move muktzeh even by a tiltul min ha-tzad when his moving is for the sake of the muktzeh itself, as will be explained in siman 311.
(And although it will be explained there that any tiltul min ha-tzad done with his body, not with his hands, he may move it even for the need of the muktzeh, while any other tiltul min ha-tzad, done by means of another object in his hands, is permitted only when he moves it for the need of its place, but not when he needs to use the muktzeh itself — and if so, this ner, were he to move it by means of another object in his hands, he could not move it in order to benefit from its light here, in the place to which he brings it, and it is also altogether impossible to bring it by a tiltul min ha-tzad with another object in his hands; and if he moves it with his body, for example with the backs of his hands or between the joints of his arms and the like, he may move it even so that it not be stolen — nevertheless one should not permit telling an akum to put it away, because those very authorities who permit moving in the normal way through an akum when the Yisrael has a permission of min ha-tzad hold that even with his body there is no permission to move for the need of the muktzeh itself, but only in order to use the muktzeh itself, or because he needs its place; and one should not be more lenient than they themselves are lenient):

If a person says to his manservant or maidservant to go with him outside at night, and they kindle the ner of their own accord — even though they too need this ner and intend solely for their own need — this is not called "for the akum's sake," since the essential going is for the Yisrael's sake and for him; and therefore (he must protest against them that they not kindle, if the ner is his; and if he did not protest against them and they kindled it) — it is forbidden to go outside with them until they put the ner down in the house, so that he not benefit from the light of the ner that was kindled for the sake of his going, even if the ner belongs to the akum.
(And if he protested against them and they did not heed him and kindled — it is permitted to use its light if he is not acting with ha'aramah, as was explained above):

And all this is regarding a ner. But regarding a medurah that an akum made — even for his sole need, or for the need of a sick person even one in danger — it is forbidden for a healthy person to warm himself by it, by decree lest the akum add wood for his sake if it were permitted for him to warm himself by it. And it is not comparable to a ner, where there is no concern that he will add for his sake, for a ner for one is a ner for a hundred — which is not so with a medurah, for the more people warm themselves by it, the more wood he must add to it to enlarge it. But if he heated the winter-house for his own need or for the need of a sick person — it is permitted for a healthy person to go from the summer-house to the winter-house to warm himself in it, for there is no concern that he will heat it more for his sake, for heating for one is heating for a hundred.
And some permit even with a medurah, and do not decree lest he add for his sake, because even if he did not add for his sake he would benefit somewhat from the medurah. And although through the additional wood he benefits from it amply — this additional benefit does not warrant a decree on its account lest he tell him to add wood for his sake.
And even if the akum made a small medurah for his own need only, or for the need of a sick person, and afterwards this [Yisrael] came to warm himself by it, and the akum added wood for his sake of his own accord — this addition does not forbid him to warm himself there, since he could have warmed himself there somewhat even without this addition.
And likewise, if the medurah was burning from while it was still day, and on Shabbos the akum added wood to it for the sake of a Yisrael — it is permitted to warm oneself by it.
(Only that a priori one must take care in all this to protest him if the wood belongs to the Yisrael, as has been explained.)
And at a time of need one may rely on their words to be lenient in divrei soferim:

In any event, if the wood that was kindled while it was still day, or for the need of an akum or sick person, has already been consumed, and only the wood that was added on Shabbos for the sake of a Yisrael is burning in this medurah — it is forbidden to warm oneself by it. And likewise, if a ner was burning from while it was still day, or for the need of an akum or a sick person, and an akum came and added another ner for the sake of a Yisrael — there is permission to use its light only while the first ner is burning; but after the first has gone out, it is forbidden to use the light of the second. And likewise, if he added oil to the burning ner — there is permission to use its light only until the oil that was in the ner at first would have been consumed, and after that it is forbidden.
And some disagree with this and permit — whether with a medurah, with a ner, or with the addition of oil — even though they belong to a Yisrael: since at the outset, when the akum did the forbidden act for the sake of the Yisrael, it was permitted to benefit from it, it never leaves its permitted status, even after the first wood, or the first ner, or the first oil has been consumed.
And in a case of great need, namely that oneg Shabbos depends on it — one may rely on their words to be lenient:

All the prohibitions explained regarding warming oneself by a medurah or in a winter-house apply only in lands that are not cold; but in cold lands such as our countries — it is permitted to say to an akum to make a medurah for the sake of a Yisrael on a day of great cold, and likewise to tell him to heat the winter-house, for all are like sick people in the face of great cold. But on a day when the cold is not so great, if he has no small children who suffer greatly — it is forbidden to tell an akum to make a medurah or to heat the winter-house.
And if he makes a medurah of his own accord from the Yisrael's wood — he must protest him. And if he did not protest — it is forbidden to warm oneself by it.
And if he heated the winter-house of his own accord for the sake of a Yisrael with the Yisrael's wood — it is forbidden to enter it in order to warm oneself. But if he lives in it — he need not leave it:

If he hired the akum to heat for him each and every day of the winter, and he heated also on Shabbos when the cold is not great — this is as if he acted of his own accord and he does not need to leave his house; only that a priori he must protest him:

And those who have the custom to be lenient even on a day when the cold is not great — in any event we do not protest in their hand, for it is better that they be unintentional transgressors than intentional ones.
And even on a day of great cold one should not heat the winter-house twice on the Shabbos day, for it suffices that he fired the oven the first time in the morning. And in any event, all is according to the cold and according to the winter-house — if it sustains the heat for a long time — and the wise has his eyes in his head:

And it is obvious that one cannot say that Rabbeinu Tam holds like the Ran regarding the straw, for then there would be no permission to move it for the sake of the body. Rather, certainly as we have written: Rabbeinu Tam and the Tosafos hold a third position regarding tiltul min ha-tzad:

But after the first wood has been consumed and the first ner has gone out, yet there is a great need — although the view of the Beis Yossef, Bach and Magen Avraham is to be stringent, nevertheless, since it is a great need on Shabbos, this is termed shaas ha-dechak, in which we rely in rabbinic matters even on an individual opinion against the many:

The chiddush of the Rav: the Alter Rebbe articulates: what counts is the intention of the non-Jew at the moment of lighting. It is a conceptual test, not merely factual.
Practical consequence: tool for the Chossid (חסיד): if possible, ask hotel staff before Shabbos not to turn on lights specifically for oneself.
חידוש ב — sensors as a borderline case (276:9-13)
Chidush ב — sensors as a borderline case (276:9-13)
Motion sensors on Shabbos
The chiddush of the Rav: the Rav, by codifying the principle of intention, opens the debate on sensors: no human intention at the moment, but the Jew's movement is the direct cause.
Practical consequence: practical tool: know the zones with sensors and avoid or bypass them.

The Rebbe's words on the themes of siman
The Rebbe — an independent generator to avoid relying on the grid on Shabbat. The Rebbe praised the residents of Kfar Chabad for installing their own generator, so as not to depend on Shabbat on the national electric grid operated by non-Jews — a direct application of siman רע״ו (benefiting from a non-Jew's work or light on Shabbat). (Igros Kodesh vol. 24, Letter no. 9106.)
Beyond the confirmed source above, we attribute to the Rebbe only verifiable primary sources (a letter, sicha, or identifiable pesak, with a link); no further statement of the Rebbe directly tied to this siman could be confirmed against Sefaria or Chabad.org.
