Siman 150 — To keep away from the road of idols, and not to bend before it
Three seifim — the Shulḥan Arukh announces it itself: Not one forbids an act of worship: all forbid what resembles it. Four cubits of distance; not bending for a thorn or for coins, but sitting or turning; not drinking mouth to mouth at a figured fountain. The Rama adds danger, dignitaries, and his conclusion (Shulḥan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 150 — 3 seifim)
He shall not bend to remove the thorn or to pick up the coins, because he would appear to be bowing to it. The siman lies in that “because he would appear”: the act is innocent, only its image is not — and the Meḥaber goes straight on to the posture that undoes it.

Hebrew text of the three seifim with fluent English translation. The four cubits, the thorn and the coins, the figured fountain and the Rama’s three glosses — explained step by step, with the braita of Avodah Zarah, the Rambam, the Tur, the Beit Yosef, and the Shakh, the Taz and the Ba’er Hetev in full.
In-depth pilpul: does the prohibition bear on the image or on the eye; what the Gemara rejected in reading “אינו נראה”; מראית עין בחדרי חדרים in the Shakh; the Tur’s version against the Rambam’s wording in the Taz, and the same Baḥ read twice; danger, and the gloss on dignitaries.
A master table of the three seifim clause by clause, the reflex questions, the Taz / Shakh maḥloket, the five golden rules, the three words of the siman and the four classic pitfalls.
The practical halakha according to the ש״ך, the ט״ז and the באר היטב, then contemporary cases. Note: the Admur HaZaken did not write a Shulḥan Arukh on Yoreh De'ah — a level of psak, not “Daat HaRav”; the Pitḥei Teshuvah and the Nekudot HaKesef do not comment on this siman.
No act of worship: three ordinary gestures which, in that place, take on the appearance of an act of worship. Bending:
And drinking:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
What does one do, then, if coins have fallen?
The Meḥaber does not say to abandon them: he indicates the posture that undoes the image.
The Tur gives the general rule from which this comes:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
And if no one is watching?
The Shakh wrote it expressly, in the name of the Prisha’s glosses:
The Gemara had already rejected that reading:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
Is an ornamental fountain with no idol included?
This is the siman’s only maḥloket. The Taz notes that the Tur and the Gemara write “in the towns”, and not “before an idol”:
And he concludes:
The Shakh, in the Baḥ’s name, reads otherwise:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
May one remove one’s hat before a dignitary?
The Rama’s second gloss targets the case where he bears a cultic image:
And it indicates the permitted way:
The Rama reports the lenient view, then rules:
For application to your own situation, consult your Rav.
