Level 4 — Daat HaRav (Alter Rebbe) — Siman

The Alter Rebbe’s way on the מִי שֶׁנִּזְדַּמֵּן לוֹ רוּחַ בִּתְפִלָּתוֹ אוֹ עִטּוּשׁ : רוּחַ מִלְּמַטָּה בַּתְּפִלָּה — מַמְתִּין עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה הָרֵיחַ ; נִצְטַעֵר וְאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל — the practice of today and כְּבוֹד הַבְּרִיּוֹת ; the מִּתְעַטֵּשׁ — from below a bad sign and from above a good sign — in the Habad sensibility.

Why a Level 4 devoted to the Alter Rebbe ? The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is a complete, self-standing Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Habad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity : it combines halakha (הלכה) + טעמי המצוות + inner dimension in one work, and rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Habad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his psak is the deciding authority. This page gathers the Rav’s way on siman ק״ג — מִי שֶׁנִּזְדַּמֵּן לוֹ רוּחַ בִּתְפִלָּתוֹ אוֹ עִטּוּשׁ, a matter treated with modesty. In the Rav it unfolds over ג׳ סְעִיפִים (three seifim) : the רוּחַ מִלְּמַטָּה בַּתְּפִלָּה and מַמְתִּין עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה הָרֵיחַ, the נִצְטַעֵר וְאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל with the distinction between בֵּיתוֹ and צִבּוּר and the כְּבוֹד הַבְּרִיּוֹת, and finally the הַמִּתְעַטֵּשׁ — a bad sign and a good sign.

Source note. The Hebrew text reproduced on this page is the complete, real text of the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, Orah Haim siman ק״גג׳ סְעִיפִים (three seifim) from the Rav’s own hand — per the Kehot edition as digitized on Sefaria (Shulchan Arukh HaRav, Orach Chayim ק״ג). The Alter Rebbe treats there, with modesty, the case of one who passes wind or sneezes during the Amida. The translations are ours. No passage is cited beyond this verifiable text.

The Alter Rebbe’s own text (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.103), followed by our English translation. The siman has three seifim (ג׳ סְעִיפִים ; seif k → .103.k).

One who was standing in the Amida (עוֹמֵד בִּתְפִלָּה) and from whom wind went out from below (רוּחַ מִלְּמַטָּה) — מַמְתִּין : he waits until the smell dissipates (עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה הָרֵיחַ), then חוֹזֵר לַמָּקוֹם שֶׁפָּסַק — he returns to the place where he stopped. The prayer is not invalidated : he waits discreetly and completes it.

נִצְטַעֵר וְאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל. summary : one in great distress who cannot contain himself (אֵינוֹ יָכוֹל לְהַעֲמִיד עַצְמוֹ) — would walk ד׳ אַמּוֹת back ; not to the sides, for his face must stay כְּנֶגֶד the place he began, lest he seem to interrupt entirely. He waits until the smell dissipates and says « רִבּוֹן הָעוֹלָמִים » — which is not a הֶפְסֵק, his prayer being already suspended — then returns to his place and to the point where he stopped. Today even the meticulous (הַמְדַקְדְּקִים) no longer distance themselves or say the « רִבּוֹן » ; some justify it : distancing was required only at home, but in the congregation (בְּצִבּוּר), where it would be a great, visible embarrassment, he does not distance at all — שֶׁגָּדוֹל כְּבוֹד הַבְּרִיּוֹת — nor does he say the « רִבּוֹן », merely waiting until the smell dissipates. All this when he cannot contain himself ; but if he can — he is obligated to contain himself as much as possible, and there is no « בַּל תְּשַׁקְּצוּ » in this ; likewise if he needs to relieve himself (see סִימָן צ״ב).

During the Amida : from below (מִלְּמַטָּה), even a slight one that makes no sound (הֲפָחָה מוּעֶטֶת שֶׁאֵינָהּ מַשְׁמַעַת קוֹל) — סִימָן רַע לוֹ ; from above (מִלְמַעְלָה), a sneeze — סִימָן יָפֶה לוֹ : just as they give him relief (נַחַת רוּחַ) from below, the sneeze being pleasant to a person, so they give him relief from above, לְמַלֹּאות שְׁאֵלָתוֹ וּבַקָּשָׁתוֹ — to fulfill his request.

The yesod : רוח or עיטוש during the Amida

The Alter Rebbe’s reading of this siman unfolds along three axes, all marked by modesty. First the רוּחַ מִלְּמַטָּה בַּתְּפִלָּה and מַמְתִּין עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה הָרֵיחַ. Then the נִצְטַעֵר וְאֵינוֹ יָכוֹל with the distinction between בֵּיתוֹ and צִבּוּר and the כְּבוֹד הַבְּרִיּוֹת. Finally the הַמִּתְעַטֵּשׁ — a bad sign and a good sign.

Wind during the Amida — waiting until the smell dissipates

The principle. Standing in the Amida, wind having gone out from below — one neither distances nor speaks : מַמְתִּין עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה הָרֵיחַ, then חוֹזֵר לַמָּקוֹם שֶׁפָּסַק (seif א).

The consequence. The prayer is not invalidated ; the waiting preserves the dignity of the place of תְּפִלָּה. Cf. siman 97 (הפסק ונקיון בתפילה).

In great distress and unable to contain oneself

The principle. One who cannot contain himself once distanced ד׳ אַמּוֹת and said the « רִבּוֹן » ; but עַכְשָׁו this is no longer the practice, and especially בְּצִבּוּר — שֶׁגָּדוֹל כְּבוֹד הַבְּרִיּוֹת — he merely waits (seif ב).

The consequence. If he can contain himself, he is obligated to, and there is no « בַּל תְּשַׁקְּצוּ ». Cf. siman 92 (העמדת עצמו בתפילה).

The sneeze — an unfavorable or favorable sign

The principle. From below, even a slight one — סִימָן רַע לוֹ ; from above, a sneeze — סִימָן יָפֶה לוֹ, נַחַת רוּחַ לְמַלֹּאות שְׁאֵלָתוֹ (seif ג).

The consequence. The worshipper is not alarmed : he continues his תְּפִלָּה with composure. Cf. siman 104 (הפסק וסדר בתפילה).

A note for study. The scope of this siman — the מַמְתִּין עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה הָרֵיחַ, the כְּבוֹד הַבְּרִיּוֹת and the סִימָן of the הַמִּתְעַטֵּשׁ — bears on the discreet conduct of the worshipper during the Amida. This page presents it at the level of the principle attested in the Rav’s text, with modesty and adding nothing invented. For deep study and personal conduct, study with a Habad Rav and in the texts themselves.

The force of the Alter Rebbe’s psak

A comparison of the Alter Rebbe’s way with those of the Mehaber, the Mishna Beroura (משנה ברורה) and the Aroukh haShulchan (ערוך השולחן) on the key points of siman ק״ג. The Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch (שולחן ערוך הרב) row is highlighted — it shows the Rav’s own sensibility as it emerges from his three seifim.

The lines of force of the Rav’s way on this siman

Three orientations that mark the Alter Rebbe’s sensibility on this siman. Each follows the structure : principle of the siman → the Rav’s reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the Rav’s real text (§1).

Line 1 — waiting until the smell dissipates

Principle of the siman :

The Rav’s reading : the Amida continues and is not invalidated ; the waiting honors the dignity of the place of תְּפִלָּה. Cf. siman 97.

Practical consequence : neither speak nor move — wait in silence, then return to the point where he stopped.

Line 2 — the dignity of persons and the practice of today

Principle of the siman :

The Rav’s reading : the halakha is careful to spare the worshipper’s visible embarrassment. Cf. siman 92.

Practical consequence : in the congregation one does not draw attention : one waits discreetly until the smell dissipates.

Line 3 — containing oneself when able, and the sign

Principle of the siman :

The Rav’s reading : the effort of restraint belongs to the respect owed to the תְּפִלָּה, without excessive stringency. Cf. siman 104.

Practical consequence : contain oneself as far as possible ; and do not be troubled by the סִימָן — continue with composure.

Habad practice

Points of conduct that follow directly from siman ק״ג in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and Habad — presented with modesty, at the level of the principle, deferring to the Rav for the detail of cases.

For the Habad Hassid — Siman

Wind gone out from below during the Amida — one neither distances nor speaks : מַמְתִּין עַד שֶׁיִּכְלֶה הָרֵיחַ, then returns to the point where he stopped.
Today one no longer distances ד׳ אַמּוֹת nor says the « רִבּוֹן » ; especially בְּצִבּוּר — שֶׁגָּדוֹל כְּבוֹד הַבְּרִיּוֹת — one merely waits. Basis : SA HaRav ק״ג seif ב.
If he can contain himself — he is obligated as far as possible, and there is no « בַּל תְּשַׁקְּצוּ » ; likewise if he needs to relieve himself (see סִימָן צ״ב). Basis : SA HaRav ק״ג seif ב.
From below, even a slight one — סִימָן רַע ; from above, a sneeze — סִימָן יָפֶה. One is not alarmed : one continues the תְּפִלָּה. Basis : SA HaRav ק״ג seif ג.

⚠ This section presents Habad conduct grounded in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch, siman ק״ג (real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case.
