Daat HaRav — The shitah of the Alter Rebbe on Siman

The way of the Alter Rebbe on what disqualifies the tsitsit: the שִׁעוּר כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה (the measure of one remaining loop-knot), the סִימָן on the ד׳ רָאשִׁים from one side of the knot, the safek שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק לְגַמְרֵי, the shitah of the ב׳ חוּטִין שְׁלֵמִים (ב׳ חוטי לבן במקום תכלת), the מִן הַגָּדִיל / מִן הֶעָנָף and the case of thick threads — in the sensibility of Chabad.

Why a Level 4 dedicated to the Alter Rebbe? The Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is an autonomous and complete Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity: it combines halacha (הלכה) + the reasons of the mitzvot (טעמי המצוות) + the inner dimension in a single work, and it rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Chabad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his ruling is the decisive authority. The Rebbe explicitly instructed to study the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe This page gathers the Rav's way on siman י״ב — דברים הפוסלים בציצית (what disqualifies the tsitsit) — where the Mehaber treats this siman in 3 seifim (ג׳ סעיפים), while the Alter Rebbe develops it across 7 seifim (ז׳ סעיפים): he develops the שִׁעוּר כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה (the minimal measure of a cut thread), the case of the ד׳ רָאשִׁים מִצַּד אֶחָד of the knot (the סִימָן), the safek שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק לְגַמְרֵי, the shitah of the ב׳ חוּטִין שְׁלֵמִים (ב׳ חוטי לבן במקום תכלת), the מִן הַגָּדִיל / מִן הֶעָנָף and the case of thick threads that cannot be knotted.

The text of the Alter Rebbe himself (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.12), followed by our English translation. The Mehaber treats this siman in 3 seifim (ג׳ סעיפים); the Alter Rebbe in 7 (ז׳ סעיפים).

The minimal measure: כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה per thread. Although at the time of attaching each of the eight threads must be י״ב גּוּדָלִין, nevertheless if after attaching all eight threads were severed and there remains of each of the ד׳ long threads only enough to make a loop-knot (עֲנִיבָה) upon each other severed thread of the ד׳ long threads, upon each one by itself — that is: if all eight threads were severed, the severed thread of the ד׳ long threads must have ג׳ פְּעָמִים כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה upon one thread. And even if only ז׳ threads were severed, the severed thread of the ד׳ long threads must have ג׳ פְּעָמִים כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה upon one [single] thread; and if it has this measure — kosher. Some say (יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים) that even if there remains in all the severed threads of the ד׳ long threads only enough to make, from all the severed threads of the ד׳ long threads, a single עֲנִיבָה of all together — kosher. But one should be stringent like the first view The Rav's chidush: he sets the remaining measure as כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה per long thread (not one knot for all), and rules for stringency.

The סִימָן on the ד׳ רָאשִׁים and the safek שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק. The above (the requirement of כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה in the severed threads) applies when five or more of the eight threads were severed; but if only four of the eight were severed — even if nothing at all remains of them — if all four severed threads are on one side of the knot, and one took care, at the time of attaching the tsitsit to the garment, to mark the ד׳ רָאשֵׁי הַחוּטִין (heads of the threads) so that these four heads always lie on one side of the knot and the other four heads lie on the other side of the knot — kosher, because there remains of each severed thread its second head, which has even more than כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה. Moreover, even if all eight threads were severed — four of them entirely, while the other four, on the second side of the knot, keep only כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה — kosher: since there remains of each of the ד׳ long threads כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה, nothing more is needed. When does this apply? When all the severed threads were on one side of the knot. But if they were on both sides — even if only two of the eight threads were severed, one on this side and one on that side, and no כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remained in them — or even if the two severed threads were on one side of the knot, but one did not take care, when making the tsitsit, that the ד׳ רָאשִׁים always lie together on one side of the knot, there is cause to fear (שֶׁמָּא) that these two severed threads are a single one of the ד׳ long threads; then one of the ד׳ long threads was severed entirely, with no כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remaining of it — therefore the tsitsit are pasoul, for one of the ד׳ threads that must be in the tsitsit מִן הַתּוֹרָה is missing. And if neither of the two severed threads has כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה by itself, but joining the two remnants would make כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה — even so one should invalidate: although כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remains of the severed long thread, nevertheless, since neither of the heads of this severed thread that emerge beyond the knot has כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה by itself, they are as if they did not exist at all, for whatever is less than כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה is as if it were not; it is thus as if nothing at all remained of the long thread. The Rav's chidush: he institutes the סִימָן (marking the 4 heads on one side) which resolves the safek שמא חוט אחד נפסק, distinguishes 4 threads from 5, and rules that less than כדי עניבה is כמאן דליתא.

The shitah of the Some say (יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים) that one never validates — even if כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remains — unless two whole long threads (ב׳ חוּטִין אֲרֻכִּין שְׁלֵמִים) remain, i.e. ד׳ רָאשִׁים each of י״ב גּוּדָלִין, since that is the measure and number of the white threads in the time when there was תכלת. Therefore, even now that we must complete ב׳ חוטי לבן in place of the ב׳ חוטי תכלת, nevertheless, for this completion, severed threads keeping כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה suffice, since at the time of attaching the tsitsit to the garment all the threads were whole; but the ב׳ חוּטִין that are עִקַּר הַמִּצְוָה, which had to be present even in the time when there was תכלת, these threads must always remain whole; and then one validates for the other threads, if they were severed and כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remained in each of the two severed long threads. Therefore, if three heads of the eight heads were severed, even if כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remained in each of them — pasoul, for there is cause to fear that no two of the severed heads come from one long thread, but each one by itself comes from a long thread; and then two whole long threads did not remain. But if only two heads were severed, if enough remained in one of them to make a small עֲנִיבָה — even if one cannot insert other threads into the עֲנִיבָה, but only that very thread with which the עֲנִיבָה is made — kosher: even if these two severed threads come from one long thread, that long thread was nevertheless not entirely severed, since כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remained in it. But if in neither of the two severed heads enough remained for a small עֲנִיבָה: if these two heads do not emerge from one side of the knot, but one of them from this side and one from that side, or even if both emerge from one side, but one did not take care, when making the tsitsit, that the ד׳ רָאשִׁים always lie together on one side of the knot — pasoul, for there is cause to fear that these two heads do not come from two long threads but both come from one long thread; then one of the ד׳ long threads was severed and not even כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remained of it, there are only ג׳ long threads here, and there is no tsitsit with fewer than ד׳ threads, as explained in sim. But if these two heads emerge from one side of the knot, and when making the tsitsit one took care to mark the ד׳ רָאשִׁים so that these four heads always lie together on one side of the knot, even if the two heads were severed entirely and כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remained in neither of them — kosher, because these two heads certainly come from two long threads; thus more than כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remained in each of the two long threads, namely the whole second head. The Rav's chidush: he sets out the shitah requiring ב׳ חוטין שלמים (the עיקר המצוה) and admits the כדי עניבה only for the completion of the ב׳ חוטי לבן במקום תכלת.

The ruling: minhag lehachmir, and the שעת הדחק. The custom of the world is to be stringent like the last view (מִנְהַג הָעוֹלָם לְהַחֲמִיר כַּסְּבָרָא הָאַחֲרוֹנָה) — the one requiring ב׳ חוטין שלמים (séif ג). But in a time of pressing need (בִּשְׁעַת הַדְּחָק), e.g. where no tsitsit are available to repair — one may rely on the first view (יֵשׁ לִסְמֹךְ עַל סְבָרָא הָרִאשׁוֹנָה), for such is the עיקר (כִּי כֵּן עִקָּר). The Rav's chidush: he rules on two tiers — a stringent minhag לכתחילה (ב׳ שלמים), but בשעת הדחק one retains the עיקר הדין (כדי עניבה), the first view being the substance of the law.

Wherever כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה is required, if because of the threads' thickness one cannot knot them (אֵין יָכוֹל לְעָנְבָן), yet had they been medium (בֵּינוֹנִים) they would have כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה — kosher: since, were they not so thick, they would be kosher (having then כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה), all the more so one does not disqualify them now that they are thick and even more visible (נִכָּרִים יוֹתֵר). The Rav's chidush: he sets the rule of measurement (the שיעור עניבה is assessed on בינונים threads, not on the actual thickness) and grounds it in a קל וחומר — thickness cannot worsen where fineness would validate.

מִן הַגָּדִיל / מִן הֶעָנָף: from where do we measure the עֲנִיבָה? Wherever כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה must remain — some say that the whole גָּדִיל (the coiled part) must remain intact, and of the עָנָף (the loose threads) כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה must remain; others say that even if severed where they are coiled in the גָּדִיל, and only כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remains in them from the point of severance to where they emerge from the corner (כָּנָף), i.e. the start of the גְּדִיל — kosher. And per the first view (start of séif ב), even if all the threads coiled in the גָּדִיל are severed and only כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה remains of them — kosher. Nevertheless, in the remaining bit of גָּדִיל, one should undo some כְּרִיכוֹת so that it too has a little עָנָף (e.g. if 3 חֻלְיוֹת of the גְּדִיל remain, undo 2 חֻלְיוֹת of it and leave one חוּלְיָא, so that there be one third גָּדִיל, two thirds עָנָף). The custom of the world is to be stringent, requiring כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה from the עָנָף emerging from the גָּדִיל (the first view of this séif); but if it is impossible otherwise (e.g. where no tsitsit are found) — one relies on the last view; yet one does not recite the ברכה over these tsitsit (ספק ברכה להקל), nor go out with them on שבת into the public domain. The Rav's chidush: he links the מן הענף / מן הגדיל to the views of séif ב, adds the practical conduct (undoing כריכות to recreate עָנָף), and fixes the בדיעבד regime (no ברכה, no going out on שבת).

The thread undone from its שְׁזִירָה (twisting) — like a severed one. Any of the eight threads that comes undone from its twisting (נִתְפָּרֵק מִשְּׁזִירָתוֹ) after attaching — whether it unravels along its whole length (becoming 2 threads) or only in part, the rest of it still remaining twisted — since the tsitsit is pasoul if it is not שָׁזוּר, we regard that thread (or its part undone from its twisting) as if that thread (or that part) were entirely severed, and its law is that of the severed threads seen above. Except that here one may be more lenient (יֵשׁ לְהָקֵל יוֹתֵר), following the first view (séif ב): even if there remains twisted, of each one of the ד׳ long threads, only כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה — kosher, because there is one who says that the threads of the tsitsit do not require שְׁזִירָה at all (אֵין צְרִיכִים שְׁזִירָה כְּלָל); hence one is more lenient here than with actually severed threads. The Rav's chidush: he equates the נתפרק with the נפסק, yet adds a קולא (relying on the first view) on grounds of the safek — twisting being, according to some, not even required.

The yesod: the שיעור כדי עניבה, the סימן on the ד׳ ראשים, the ב׳ חוטין שלמים, the מן הגדיל / מן הענף

The Alter Rebbe's reading of this siman unfolds in four movements. First, he fixes the minimal measure: after attaching, a severed thread must keep כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה per long thread (séif א). Next, he resolves the safek through the סִימָן on the ד׳ רָאשִׁים on one side of the knot (séif ב) — without which one fears שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק לְגַמְרֵי (a חסר מן התורה). Then he sets out the shitah of the ב׳ חוּטִין שְׁלֵמִים (the עִקַּר הַמִּצְוָה) and gives the ruling: a stringent minhag, but in שעת הדחק one retains the עיקר (séifim ג-ד). Finally, he refines the measures: thick threads measured as בֵּינוֹנִים (séif ה), the מִן הַגָּדִיל / מִן הֶעָנָף (séif ו), and the נִתְפָּרֵק מִשְּׁזִירָתוֹ treated like a נִפְסָק, more leniently (séif ז).

The measure of a remaining loop-knot

The principle (séif א). After attaching, if the threads are severed, each long thread must keep כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה (enough for a loop-knot) — per thread (the first view), not one knot for all (the יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים).

The measure by threads (séif ה). The כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה is measured on בֵּינוֹנִים threads: if thick threads cannot be knotted but, were they medium, would have כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה — kosher (קל וחומר).

The סימן on the ד׳ ראשים and the safek

The principle (séif ב). If one marked at attaching the ד׳ רָאשִׁים on one side of the knot, one knows that 4 threads severed on one side leave each one's second head intact → kosher. Without the סִימָן (or on both sides), one fears שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק לְגַמְרֵי.

If a long thread is wholly severed without כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה, one of the ד׳ threads required מִן הַתּוֹרָה is missing (link to sim.

The shitah (séif ג). A יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים requires that two whole long threads always remain (the עִקַּר הַמִּצְוָה, required even in the time of תכלת); the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה suffices only for the completion of the ב׳ חוטי לבן במקום תכלת. Hence: 3 heads severed → pasoul; 2 heads → a nafka mina by the סימן.

The ruling (séif ד). מִנְהַג הָעוֹלָם לְהַחֲמִיר like this last view (ב׳ שלמים); but בִּשְׁעַת הַדְּחָק one relies on the first view (כדי עניבה), כִּי כֵּן עִקָּר.

The מן הגדיל / מן הענף and the נתפרק

From where one measures (séif ו). According to one view, the גָּדִיל must remain whole and the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה counted from the עָנָף; according to another, from the point of severance. Failing that: the last view, but without a ברכה and without going out on שבת. Conduct: undo some כְּרִיכוֹת to recreate a little עָנָף.

The נִתְפָּרֵק מִשְּׁזִירָתוֹ (séif ז). A thread undone from its twisting is treated like a severed one (a tsitsit not שָׁזוּר is pasoul), yet more leniently — one follows the first view, for some say the שְׁזִירָה is not even required.

Referral to study. The inner dimension of דברים הפוסלים בציצית — beyond the halachic principle set here (the שיעור כדי עניבה, the סימן on the ד׳ ראשים, the ב׳ חוטין שלמים, the מן הגדיל / מן הענף) — touches on Chabad thought (Tanya, Likkutei Torah, and the sichot on the tsitsit and the wholeness of the threads). This page presents it at the level of the attested principle, without citing a chapter or a precise formulation. For an in-depth study of this dimension, study with a Chabad Rav and in the texts themselves.

The force of the Alter Rebbe's psak

A comparison of the Alter Rebbe's way with those of the Mehaber, the Rama (רמ״א) and the Mishna Berura (משנה ברורה) on the key points of siman י״ב. The Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe (שולחן ערוך הרב) row is highlighted — it displays the Rav's own sensibility, as it emerges from his text (§1, 7 seifim). The Rav develops across 7 seifim what the Mehaber arranges in 3.

Topic Mehaber Rama Mishna Berura The Alter Rebbe's way
— MB 12:1 + Beour Halakha on OH 12:1 — the כדי עניבה: a single עניבה for all the cut threads together, and the Magen Avraham who requires one per thread; MB 12:3 and MB 12:5 — the שיור is judged on the two ראשים together: invalid only if neither retains כדי עניבה, and MB ס״ק ה adds « אבל אם באחד מהן יש כדי עניבה כשר » — one of them suffices. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he sets the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה per long thread (ג׳ פעמים on a thread), cites the יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים (a single עניבה מכולם) and rules וְיֵשׁ לְהַחֲמִיר כַּסְּבָרָא הָרִאשׁוֹנָה (séif א).
הסימן בד׳ ראשים / הספק שמא חוט אחד נפסק (séif ב) OH 12:1 — within the din of the כדי עניבה: the סימן on the ד׳ ראשים and the doubt שמא נפסק חוט אחד. Hagaha on OH 12:1 — summary: if one marked the ד׳ ראשים and ג׳ ראשים were cut on the other side, pasoul; cut on both sides, pasoul too. MB 12:6-7 and MB 12:9-10 — the חשש שמא חוט אחד; the סימן on the ד׳ ראשים; what having דקדק at the making changes. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he institutes the סִימָן (marking the ד׳ רָאשִׁים on one side), distinguishes ד׳ / ה׳ threads, resolves the safek שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק, and rules that less than כדי עניבה הרי הוא כמו שאינו (séif ב).
ב׳ חוטין שלמים (עיקר המצוה) והכרעה (séifim ג-ד) OH 12:1 — in the base din, without spelling out the עיקר המצוה. Hagaha on OH 12:1 — « ונוהגין כר״ת ». MB 12:8 — the טעם of ר״ת: one מין must remain whole; MB 12:11 — the הלכה follows the סברא ראשונה, and one may bless on these tsitsit. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he sets out the shitah of the ב׳ חוּטִין שְׁלֵמִים (עִקַּר הַמִּצְוָה, ב׳ חוטי לבן במקום תכלת), rules מִנְהַג הָעוֹלָם לְהַחֲמִיר, but בִּשְׁעַת הַדְּחָק on the first view כִּי כֵּן עִקָּר (séifim ג-ד).
Hagaha on OH 12:2 — « ומשערין בחוטין בינונים ». MB 12:12 — the threads are long enough for the כדי עניבה: it is their thickness alone that prevents tying (the Mishna Berura has no ס״ק on the Rama's gloss here). The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he grounds in a קל וחומר the measure on בֵּינוֹנִים threads — the thickness (נִכָּרִים יוֹתֵר) cannot worsen where fineness would validate (séif ה).
— MB 12:13 + Beour Halakha on OH 12:3 — when דלא אפשר: one relies on ר״י, but without a ברכה and without going out on שבת; the Pri Megadim on undoing the גדיל. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he links the מן הַגָּדִיל / מן הֶעָנָף to the views of séif ב, adds the conduct (undoing כריכות to recreate ענף) and fixes the בדיעבד regime — no ברכה, no going out on שבת (séif ו).
נתפרק משזירתו — כדין נפסק (séif ז) — (the Mehaber does not develop this case in this siman; he treats it in OH 11:3). — MB 11:17 — in matters of שזירה one relies on the first view of siman י״ב; Beour Halakha on OH 11:2 — some Aharonim are lenient בדיעבד even without שזירה, and the Beour Halakha writes that one is not to rely on it. The Mishna Berura has no ס״ק on this case in siman י״ב. The Alter Rebbe's way — chidush: he equates the נִתְפָּרֵק מִשְּׁזִירָתוֹ with the נִפְסָק (a tsitsit not שָׁזוּר is pasoul), yet adds a קולא — one follows the first view, for some say אֵין צְרִיכִים שְׁזִירָה כְּלָל (séif ז).

The defining lines of the Rav's way on this siman

Four orientations that characterize the Alter Rebbe's sensibility on what disqualifies the tsitsit — beyond the mere application of the rules. Each follows the structure: principle of the siman → the Rav's reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the Rav's real text (§1).

Principle of the siman: if all the corner's threads are severed, כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה of all the severed threads together remains → kosher (séif א of the Mehaber).

The Rav's reading: he sets the measure per long thread (ג׳ פעמים כדי עניבה on a thread), cites the יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים (a single עניבה מכולם) and rules for stringency (סברא ראשונה).

Practical consequence: a severed thread is checked thread by thread (keeping כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה of each long thread); in doubt → consult a Rav (séif א).

The סימן on the ד׳ ראשים

Principle of the siman: one must know how many threads are severed and on which side; a long thread wholly severed (חָסֵר) renders pasoul מִן הַתּוֹרָה (link to sim. יא).

The Rav's reading: he institutes the סִימָן (marking the ד׳ רָאשִׁים on one side of the knot), which resolves the safek שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק לְגַמְרֵי; the less-than-כדי עניבה is כמאן דליתא.

Practical consequence: at attaching, mark the ד׳ רָאשִׁים on one side; count the severed threads side by side; in doubt → consult a Rav (séif ב).

The ב׳ חוטין שלמים and the ruling

Principle of the siman: does the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה suffice, or must whole threads remain? (the עיקר המצוה of the ב׳ threads — séif א of the Mehaber).

The Rav's reading: he sets out the shitah of the ב׳ חוּטִין שְׁלֵמִים (the עִקַּר הַמִּצְוָה), and rules on two tiers: מִנְהַג הָעוֹלָם לְהַחֲמִיר, but בִּשְׁעַת הַדְּחָק on the first view (כִּי כֵּן עִקָּר).

Practical consequence: לכתחילה require ב׳ חוטין שלמים; in שעת הדחק rely on the כדי עניבה — but consult a Rav (séifim ג-ד).

The measure: the גדיל, the ענף and the נתפרק

Principle of the siman: the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה is measured on בֵּינוֹנִים threads; and from where to count it — from the גָּדִיל or the עָנָף? (séifim ב-ג of the Mehaber).

The Rav's reading: thick threads measured בבינונים (קל וחומר); מִנְהַג: כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה from the עָנָף; the נִתְפָּרֵק מִשְּׁזִירָתוֹ treated like a נִפְסָק, more leniently (some do not require the שזירה).

Practical consequence: measure with medium threads; failing עָנָף, undo כְּרִיכוֹת; without a ברכה if relying on the last view; consult a Rav (séifim ה-ז).

Halacha lemaaseh — Chabad conduct

Six points of conduct that follow directly from siman י״ב in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and of Chabad — presented at the level of principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of particular cases and minhaguim.

For the Chabad Chassid — Siman

  • ① A severed thread: check the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה. If one or more threads are severed after attaching, check that each long thread keeps enough for a loop-knot (כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה); otherwise the tsitsit is pasoul. The Rav is stringent (כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה per thread). Basis: SA HaRav séif א.
  • ② Mark the ד׳ רָאשִׁים on one side (the סִימָן). At attaching, mark the ד׳ רָאשִׁים on one side of the knot — this resolves the safek שֶׁמָּא חוּט אֶחָד נִפְסַק לְגַמְרֵי. Count how many threads are severed and on which side; a long thread wholly severed renders pasoul מִן הַתּוֹרָה. Basis: SA HaRav séif ב.
  • ③ ב׳ חוּטִין שְׁלֵמִים — the minhag's stringency. The minhag is to require that two whole long threads (the עִקַּר הַמִּצְוָה) remain; the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה only completes the ב׳ חוטי לבן במקום תכלת. In שעת הדחק (no tsitsit to repair) one relies on the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה, כִּי כֵּן עִקָּר. Basis: SA HaRav séifim ג-ד.
  • ④ Thick threads — measure בֵּינוֹנִים. Wherever כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה is needed, if the thick threads cannot be knotted but, were they medium, would have it — kosher: one measures as with בֵּינוֹנִים threads, thickness cannot worsen. Basis: SA HaRav séif ה.
The minhag: count the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה from the עָנָף (the loose threads emerging from the גָּדִיל). Failing that, undo some כְּרִיכוֹת to recreate a little עָנָף; if relying on the last view — without a ברכה, and without going out on שבת into the public domain. Basis: SA HaRav séif ו.
  • ⑥ The נִתְפָּרֵק מִשְּׁזִירָתוֹ. A thread undone from its twisting (שְׁזִירָה) is treated like a severed one — but more leniently (some say the שְׁזִירָה is not even required). For a concrete case — consult a Rav. Basis: SA HaRav séif ז.

⚠ This section presents the Chabad conduct founded on the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, siman י״ב (the real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — and especially for cases of doubt (severed threads, the כְּדֵי עֲנִיבָה, the מן הגדיל / מן הענף, the ברכה): consult your Rav, and for Chabad, a Chabad Rav.
