Daat HaRav — The shitah of the Alter Rebbe on Siman

The way of the Alter Rebbe on the threads of the tsitsit: spinning and twisting lishmah (טווייה ושזירה לשמה), four threads folded into eight, the length of י״ב גּוּדָלִים and the שִׁעוּר הגּוּדָל, the חוליות and קשרים (segments and knots), the תַּעֲשֶׂה וְלֹא מִן הֶעָשׂוּי (cutting the thread-heads first), the נקב and the הרחקה — in the sensibility of Chabad.

Why a Level 4 dedicated to the Alter Rebbe? The Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe is not a commentary on the Mehaber (מחבר) — it is an autonomous and complete Shulchan Aruch, written by the Alter Rebbe (Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of Chabad, disciple of the Maggid (מגיד) of Mezeritch). Its singularity: it combines halacha (הלכה) + the reasons of the mitzvot (טעמי המצוות) + the inner dimension in a single work, and it rules with a unique Talmudic rigor.

For Chabad, the Alter Rebbe is הפוסק האחרון — his ruling is the decisive authority. The Rebbe explicitly instructed to study the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe This page gathers the Rav's way on siman י״א — דיני חוטי הציצית (the laws of the threads of the tsitsit) — where the Mehaber treats this siman in 15 seifim (ט״ו סעיפים), while the Alter Rebbe develops it across 35 seifim (ל״ה סעיפים): he develops the spinning and twisting lishmah (טווייה ושזירה לשמה), the ד׳ threads folded into ח׳, the length of י״ב גּוּדָלִים and the שִׁעוּר הגּוּדָל, the חוליות and קשרים (5 knots, 4 spaces, 39 windings), the תַּעֲשֶׂה וְלֹא מִן הֶעָשׂוּי (cutting the thread-heads before tying), the נקב and the distancing from the edge (הרחקה), and the נוֹטֵף עַל הַקֶּרֶן.

The text of the Alter Rebbe himself (Sefaria source Shulchan_Arukh_HaRav,_Orach_Chayim.11), followed by our English translation. The Mehaber treats this siman in 15 seifim (ט״ו סעיפים); the Alter Rebbe in 35 (ל״ה סעיפים).

The opening: four threads, no fewer — and not one more. In the time of תכלת the mitzva was 2 dyed and 2 white threads; now, without תכלת, 2 white ones in place of the 2 of תכלת, since there is no tsitsit with fewer than 4 threads (the drasha "גְּדִלִים" — a גָּדִיל is at least 2 threads twisted together, and the plural "גְּדִלִים" makes four). And if one adds even one thread — he transgresses "בַּל תּוֹסִיף", and that tsitsit is pasoul until he removes a thread (cf. sim. The Rav's chidush: he anchors the whole siman on the drasha "גְּדִלִים" (2 גדילים × 2 threads = 4) and states at once the בל תוסיף of a surplus thread.

Twisting (שזירה) is required. The threads need שְׁזִירָה (spun and twisted like a cord — טָווּי וְשָׁזוּר, from "פְּתִיל תְּכֵלֶת"); and just as the תכלת is spun and twisted, so too the white, since they are compared (הֻקְּשׁוּ) to one another ("גְּדִלִים תַּעֲשֶׂה"). The Rav's chidush: he grounds the requirement of שזירה in "פְּתִיל" and extends it to the white by the היקש of תכלת/white.

The heart of the siman: spinning and twisting lishmah. The threads must be spun and twisted for the sake of the tsitsit specifically (לְשֵׁם צִיצִית דַּוְקָא) — one declares at the start of the spinning and the twisting that he does so לשם ציצית, or tells the woman "spin me tsitsit for a talit," since it is said "תַּעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ" — for the sake of your obligation (לְשֵׁם חוֹבָתְךָ). If not spun lishmah, or not twisted lishmah — pasoul. Some בעלי נפש are stringent even over the carding (נִפּוּץ), but the practice is not so. The Rav's chidush: he fixes the concrete act of lishmah (declaring it at the start), treats spinning and twisting as two acts each requiring lishmah, and places the נפוץ as an unadopted stringency.

A non-Jew spins אדעתיה דנפשיה — pasoul. If a non-Jew spun or twisted, even with a Jew standing over him telling him to do it לשם ציצית — pasoul, since the non-Jew acts of his own mind (אֲדַעֲתֵּיה דְּנַפְשֵׁיהּ קָעָבִיד) and does not heed the Jew — unless the Jew assists a little (מְסַיֵּעַ מְעַט). But if a חרש, שוטה or קטן spun or twisted with an adult (גָדוֹל) standing over them telling them to do it לשם ציצית — kasher. The Rav's chidush: he distinguishes the non-Jew (whose own intent nullifies the Jew's, save סיוע) from the חש״ו (who has no contrary intent, so standing over suffices).

Four threads folded into eight, י״ב גּוּדָלִין long. The 4 threads of the tsitsit are inserted into the talit and folded, so that they be eight threads ("פְּתִיל תְּכֵלֶת" — folded like a cord). After folding, each of the 8 threads must be 12 גּוּדָלִין (י״ב גּוּדָלִין) long, measured at the wide part of the thumb (בַּמָּקוֹם הָרָחָב שֶׁבַּגּוּדָל). The Rav's chidush: he specifies that the י״ב גודלים are measured after folding (on the 8) and at the wide part of the thumb.

The measure of the גּוּדָל (thumb). The measure of the thumb of an average man is like the width of 7 barley grains (ז׳ שְׂעוֹרוֹת) placed side by side tightly, which is like the length of 2 barley grains loosely (בְּרֶוַח). The Rav's chidush: he fixes the reference measure of the גודל for all the lengths of the siman.

The length reckoning: 30 גודלין per thread (= 15 after folding). These 12 גודלים are measured after all the windings and knots are made, starting from the edge of the corner (מִשְּׂפַת הַכָּנָף) — whatever rests on the corner is not counted. Each of the four threads must therefore be 30 גּוּדָלִין (שְׁלֹשִׁים), so that when folded each of the eight is 15 (חֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר): 2 גודלים from the נקב to the corner's edge (= קֶשֶׁר אֲגוּדָל), 1 גודל for the knots, and 12 hanging for the validity of the tsitsit. The Rav's chidush: he decomposes exactly the 15 גודלים of the folded thread (2+1+12) and fixes the measuring point (the corner's edge, not what lies on the corner).

The long thread (the שַׁמָּשׁ) for the windings. One of the threads shall be longer, in order to wind the גָּדִיל (the windings) with it, as will be explained later. And if no single thread is long enough for all the windings — he may wind some with this thread and some with another, just as in the time of תכלת they wound some in תכלת and some in white threads. The Rav's chidush: he institutes the שמש (the long winding-thread) and permits, when needed, to alternate threads — on the model of the old תכלת/white alternation.

Lengthening beyond 12 גודלים — permitted, and good. If one wishes to make the tsitsiyot longer than 12 גודלין — it is permitted, and he may lengthen them as he wishes. And it is good to do so, so that even if they tear (יִפָּסְקוּ), 12 גודלין remain. The Rav's chidush: he turns the lengthening into a practical precaution (a reserve in case of partial tearing).

Refuse-wool (בִּזּוּי מִצְוָה) is pasoul. We already said (sim. ט) that the tsitsit must be of the material of the corner (מִמִּין הַכָּנָף); one therefore does not make it from wool caught in thorns where the flock lay, nor from hairs plucked from the flock, nor from leftover warp-threads (שִׁיּוּרֵי שְׁתִי) the weaver leaves at the garment's end. If one made a tsitsit from them — pasoul, since these are not fit to make a garment (they are wool-refuse), and the Torah said "הַכָּנָף" — of the corner's material. So too any poor wool from which no garment is made. The Rav's chidush: he ties the exclusion of refuse to the din of "מין כנף" (material fit for a בגד) more than to mere disgrace.

Stolen already-spun threads — pasoul (וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם מִשֶּׁלָּהֶם). If one stole threads already spun לשם ציצית and the thief made a tsitsit from them — pasoul, for it is said "וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם" — of what is theirs (מִשֶּׁלָּהֶם), excluding the stolen (פְּרָט לְגָזֵל). But if the thief sold the tsitsit to another and the owners had already despaired (נִתְיָאֲשׁוּ) — kasher, since the buyer acquired it through יֵאוּשׁ + שִׁנּוּי רְשׁוּת (as in Hoshen Mishpat sim. The Rav's chidush: he applies to the tsitsit the acquisitions-of-theft rules (יאוש + שינוי רשות) to decide when the stolen thread reverts to validity.

If one stole un-spun wool and the thief spun it לשם ציצית: as long as the owners have not despaired — pasoul, for it is still stolen and the thief did not acquire it by spinning, which is a reversible change (שִׁנּוּי הַחוֹזֵר לִבְרִיָּתוֹ) — the threads can be turned back into wool. But if they despaired, or even without despair the thief made an irreversible change (שִׁנּוּי גָּמוּר) (e.g. bleached the wool with sulphur) — he acquired it, and the tsitsit is kasher; but he does not bless over it, for this is not blessing but blaspheming (מְנָאֵץ), the tsitsit having come to his hand by theft. The Rav's chidush: he distinguishes the reversible change (spinning, which does not acquire) from the irreversible (bleaching), and adds "blessing but blaspheming" — kasher without a ברכה.

The נֶעֱבַד: wool of a worshipped animal — pesoula (מָאוּס לְגָבוֹהַּ). The wool of an animal one worshipped (הַמִּשְׁתַּחֲוֶה לִבְהֵמָה) is pesoula for the tsitsit. Although worshipped animals are not forbidden for profane use (הֶדְיוֹט), for a mitzva it is forbidden because it is repugnant to the Most High (מָאוּס לְגָבוֹהַּ) — as worshipped animals are barred from the altar; and though the wool changes when made into a tsitsit, its appearance of wool remains and is recognizable. But one who worships planted flax (פִּשְׁתָּן נָטוּעַ) — it is permitted to make a tsitsit from it: an attached-to-the-ground worshipped item is permitted for benefit, and even for the Most High it is not repugnant, since it changed (שִׁנּוּי) from its state at worship — it was then like a mere tree, and now made into threads its former appearance has wholly gone. The Rav's chidush: he grounds the distinction in the change of appearance — wool keeps its look (מאוס remains), flax has lost it (the worship was of "the tree").

The נקב: not higher than 3 גודלים ("עַל הַכָּנָף"). When making the hole through which the tsitsit is threaded — one does not make it higher than 3 גּוּדָלִין from the garment's edge, for it is said "עַל הַכָּנָף": above three it is no longer the "corner" but the body of the garment (בֶּגֶד). And if he made it higher than 3 — even if, when tying, he shortens the threads on the corner to crumple the corners so that the hole comes below 3 — it is still pasoul. The Rav's chidush: he fixes the upper bound of the נקב (3 גודלים = the limit of the כנף) and rules that the later crumpling does not redeem a hole made too high.

And if he made the hole higher than 3 גודלים, then after threading the tsitsit cut at the hole so that the tsitsit hang below 3 — pasoul, for it is said "גְּדִלִים תַּעֲשֶׂה" — and not from what is already made in invalidity (וְלֹא מִן הֶעָשׂוּי כְּבָר בִּפְסוּל), as explained in sim. י. The Rav's chidush: he introduces here the yesod of תעשה ולא מן העשוי applied to the נקב — a tsitsit set when the נקב was pasoul stays pasoul, the cut being an act on the garment, not on the threads.

The הרחקה: not too close to the edge either. Nor does one make the hole too close to the garment's edge, for it is said "עַל הַכָּנָף" — if very close it would be "beneath the corner." One must therefore distance the נקב from the edge by the measure from the קֶשֶׁר אֲגוּדָל to the end of the nail (about 2 גודלים). And if afterward, in tying, he shortened the threads on the corner and the corners folded so the hole came below that measure — it is still kasher. The Rav's chidush: he fixes the lower bound (הרחקה ≈ 2 גודלים) and — unlike the too-high נקב (seif יד) — deems the later crumpling here harmless (בדיעבד kasher).

Measure straight, not diagonally. The measure of the 3 גודלים, and likewise the מְלֹא קֶשֶׁר אֲגוּדָל to distance — are measured straight (בְּיֹשֶׁר) from the garment's length-edge and from its width-edge, but not diagonally (בַּאֲלַכְסוֹן) from the angle of the corner. The Rav's chidush: he specifies the mode of measuring (perpendicular to both edges, never the corner's diagonal).

The הרחקה is required only at the time of setting; and the אִמְרָא. The measure of מְלֹא קֶשֶׁר אֲגוּדָל of distancing — one need only heed it at the time of setting the tsitsit (הֲטָלַת הַצִּיצִית); but if after setting, the warp (שְׁתִי) or weft (עֵרֶב) threads came loose, the hole widened, and the tsitsit descended below the מלא קשר אגודל — kasher, for the Torah required the tsitsit not be "beneath the corner" only at the time of making ("וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִת עַל כַּנְפֵי"). Nonetheless, לכתחילה it is good to make a hem (אִמְרָא) around the נקב, so the garment's threads do not come loose; and likewise a hem at the garment's edge, so the measure does not shrink. The Rav's chidush: he rules that the distancing measure is a din of the time-of-making alone, and institutes the אמרא (reinforcing the נקב and the edge) as a לכתחילה precaution.

Do not set the tsitsit on the גָּדִיל (the border-braid / "לייסט"). If there is a braided border (גָּדִיל, "לייסט") on the garment's edge to strengthen it — whether on the width-edge or the length-edge — one does not set the tsitsit on it, even at a מלא קשר אגודל from the corner's edge (e.g. if the braid is wide); for it is said "עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם", and the braid is not deemed the essential part (עִקָּר) of the garment but is subordinate and serves it (טָפֵל וּמְשַׁמֵּשׁ). The Rav's chidush: he classes the גדיל as טפל (not עיקר הבגד): though attached, it does not bear the tsitsit.

But the גָּדִיל counts in the distancing measure. When setting the tsitsit in the garment itself — one need not distance a מלא קשר אגודל apart from the braid: the גָּדִיל is counted within the measure; and likewise for the 3-גודלים distancing, the braid counts as part of the garment (בִּכְלַל הַבֶּגֶד). One must therefore heed that the נקב not be higher than 3 גודלים from the outer edge of the braid. The Rav's chidush: he rules that the גדיל, though it does not bear the tsitsit (seif יט), still enters the reckoning of the measures — hence the 3-גודלים bound is taken from its outer edge.

Lechatchila: measure without the braid. Although the גָּדִיל counts within the garment for the מלא קשר אגודל measure, still לכתחילה it is good to measure the מלא קשר אגודל without the braid, and let the נקב be within the 3 גודלים including the braid; and if the braid is very wide — he cuts part of it. The Rav's chidush: he reconciles the two prior seifim as a לכתחילה conduct: the upper bound (3) includes the גדיל, the lower bound (מלא קשר) is measured without it — and an over-wide braid is trimmed.

The doubt of protruding threads (שתי without ערב). If at the garment's edge warp threads (שְׁתִי) without weft protrude (or weft without warp) — there is a doubt (סָפֵק) whether they count within the garment, since they are not a finished weave (אָרִיג גָּמוּר). One must therefore heed by both requirements (לְחֻמְרָא): that the נקב not be higher than 3 גודלים from the edge of these threads (lest they count), and to measure the מלא קשר אגודל without them (lest they do not); and if these threads extend far — he cuts part of them. The Rav's chidush: facing the doubt (unfinished threads) he imposes a double stringency — include them for the upper bound and exclude them for the lower.

The heart: cutting the thread-heads — תַּעֲשֶׂה וְלֹא מִן הֶעָשׂוּי. It is permitted to take one long thread, fold it into four, insert it in the corner and fold them — that is eight — then cut the thread-heads (פּוֹסֵק רָאשֵׁי הַחוּטִין), and they become eight threads. But if he forgot to cut until he had wound even one חֻלְיָא and then tied even one קֶשֶׁר — pasoul: for מן התורה one חוליא and one knot suffice ("גְּדִלִים תַּעֲשֶׂה", no number specified), so the tsitsit was already made in invalidity — there were not four whole threads but one thread folded into eight — and the Torah said "תַּעֲשֶׂה", not מן העשוי בפסול. But if he cut the heads immediately after one חוליא, before tying — and all the more after the first knot, before winding — kasher. And לכתחילה it is good to cut the heads before even threading the tsitsit into the נקב. The Rav's chidush: he makes תעשה ולא מן העשוי the yesod of the seif — a folded uncut thread forms a גדיל made בפסול already at the first חוליא + קשר (already sufficient מדאורייתא); cutting before preserves, cutting after does not redeem.

Not to cut with a knife (a הידור). It is good to heed not to cut the tsitsit with a knife, on the model of "לֹא תָנִיף עֲלֵיהֶם בַּרְזֶל" (you shall not raise iron over them) — but rather to break them with the teeth (יִנְשְׁכֵם בְּשִׁנָּיו). The Rav's chidush: he adopts this הידור (breaking by tooth, not iron), likened to the law of the altar's stones.

גָּדִיל + צִיצִית: the braided part and the free part. It is written "גְּדִלִים תַּעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ" — one might make it all braid (גְּדִיל)? The Torah says "וְעָשׂוּ לָהֶם צִיצִת", and "צִיצִית" are separate threads (חוּטִין נִפְרָדִין) (cf. sim. ח). How so? That the גָּדִיל issue from the corner and the צִיצִית from the גָּדִיל (braided part, then free hanging part). The גדיל has no measure מן התורה: whether he wound most of the length or one חֻלְיָא — kasher, provided he makes a קֶשֶׁר at the end of the winding, since the winding does not hold without a knot after it (else there is no גדיל). The Rav's chidush: he grounds the twofold structure (braided גדיל / free ציצית) in the two verses and holds that the final knot constitutes the גדיל.

A free part (עָנָף) must protrude. If one wound the entire tsitsit and left not even a bit of free part (עָנָף) protruding — pasoul, for it is said "צִיצִת" (which implies free threads). The Rav's chidush: he makes the ענף (free hanging threads) a condition — an all-braided one nullifies the very name "ציצית."

The 7 חוליות of old, and the minhag of 5 knots. In the time of תכלת the Sages ordained no fewer than seven חֻלְיוֹת against the seven heavens (ז׳ רְקִיעִים) (the תכלת resembling the sky), and a קֶשֶׁר at the end of each חוליא to distinguish them. Now, without תכלת, we need not be exact about the count of חוליות or קשרים. Nonetheless, the widespread custom in all Israel from ancient years is to make five קשרים (ה׳ קְשָׁרִים), for it is said "וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ וּזְכַרְתֶּם אֶת כָּל מִצְוֹת ה׳" — and the mitzvot are 613: "צִיצִית" = 600, + 8 threads + 5 knots = תרי״ג (613). The Rav's chidush: he links the minhag of 5 knots to the siman of תרי״ג and distinguishes the old ordinance (7 חוליות of תכלת) from present practice.

The order of tying: 5 knots, 4 spaces, windings between. The custom is to make four spaces (אֲוִירִים) between the five knots, winding some windings in each space. How? He takes 4 threads from one side of the corner and 4 from the other and ties them one over the other twice (a double knot, קֶשֶׁר כָּפוּל — a single one will not hold and counts as no knot), then winds with the long thread around the 7 threads some windings, ties twice again, winds again, and so on until he completes five double knots and four spaces filled with windings. The number of windings in each space has no fixed measure — he does as he wishes. The Rav's chidush: he describes the full procedure (double knot 4+4, windings around 7, alternating) and holds that each קשר must be double to hold.

The נוֹי: one third גדיל, two thirds עָנָף. The beauty (נוֹי) of the tsitsit is that a third of the threads' length be גָּדִיל (4 גודלים) and two thirds עָנָף (free part). Even if he lengthened beyond 12 גודלים — a third must be גדיל. The knots and windings together are called גדיל everywhere, and altogether they are but a third (4 גודלים). And in the Raya Mehemna it is written that between knot and knot there be a full thumb's breadth (מְלֹא רֹחַב אֲגוּדָל), apart from the knots. The Rav's chidush: he fixes the נוי ratio (1/3 גדיל, 2/3 ענף) and cites the Raya Mehemna for the spacing of the knots.

The minhag of the windings: 7-8-11-13 = ל״ט ("הוי״ה אֶחָד"). The custom is to wind in the first space 7 windings, the second 8, the third 11, and the fourth 13 — which total thirty-nine (ל״ט), the count of "הוי״ה אֶחָד" (26 + 13). And since it is נוי that all the חוליות be of equal length, in the first space (few windings) he spaces them out, in the second draws them a little closer, in the third closer, in the fourth closer still, until all are of one measure. The Rav's chidush: he gives the numbered minhag (7/8/11/13 = 39) and its meaning (הוי״ה אחד), with the way to keep the חוליות of equal length.

The minhag of the חוליות (of 3; 13 חוליות). Some have the custom to wind each space by חֻלְיוֹת (groups): after 3 windings, he spaces a little and winds 3 more in the same space, then one from the first space joined to two from the second, spaces and winds 3 more, and so on until the 39 windings are complete in 13 small חוליות (of 3). And so they did in the time of תכלת. The Rav's chidush: he reports the custom of grouping the 39 windings into 13 חוליות of 3 (tied to the תכלת practice), alongside the simple minhag of seif ל.

All these measures are only לכתחילה. All the measures we explained — the count of חוליות, windings, קשרים — are only לכתחילה; but בְּדִיעֲבַד, when the confection is complete, or בִּשְׁעַת הַדְּחָק (e.g. Shabbat eve at nightfall, with no time) — the Sages set their ordinance upon the Torah's law: one חוליא and one קשר suffice, and one may bless over it. The Rav's chidush: he rules that the whole procedure (5 knots, 39 windings) is לכתחילה, the Torah requiring only a חוליא + קשר — with a ברכה even at need.

A knot at the end of each thread — two customs. Some have the custom to make a knot at the end of each of the eight threads, so they do not unravel from their twisting (שְׁזִירָה). And some do not, not wishing to add to the five knots (for the reason explained above — the siman of תרי״ג), especially if the threads are well twisted, where unraveling is rare. The Rav's chidush: he reports the two customs and their reasons — preserving the שזירה vs. not altering the count of the 5 knots.

נוֹטֵף עַל הַקֶּרֶן: the thread must touch and strike the corner. When hanging the tsitsit on the garment — one must ensure the גָּדִיל touches and strikes the corner of the garment (נוֹגֵעַ וּמַכֶּה בִּכְנַף הַבֶּגֶד), and does not hang toward the ground, for it is said "עַל כַּנְפֵי בִגְדֵיהֶם". Therefore the two lower tsitsiyot are hung along the garment's length: when he wraps himself and the talit's length goes round the width of his body, the tsitsiyot will touch and strike the corner; but if the גדיל hung along the width, it would hang toward the ground. For the two upper tsitsiyot — sometimes along the length, sometimes the width, all per the wrapping, only heeding that it not hang toward the ground but touch and strike the corner. The Rav's chidush: he derives from "עַל כַּנְפֵי" the manner of setting (נוטף על הקרן) and the orientation of the threads per the wrapping.

The closing: the יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים of two נקבים. Some say (יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים) that one should not set the tsitsit as we do, but make two holes (שְׁנֵי נְקָבִים) in the garment, thread the tsitsit through one and draw them out through the other. But the halacha is not like this יֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים; and one who comes to be stringent per them — should do so only on a טַלִּית קָטָן, so it not be visible to all and appear as presumption (יוֹהֲרָא). The Rav's chidush: he sets aside the יש אומרים (not the halacha) yet leaves the חומרא possible in private (talit katan), to avoid יוהרא.

The yesod: spinning and twisting lishmah, the number and length of the threads, the knots, the

The Alter Rebbe's reading of this siman holds in four movements. First, he grounds the tsitsit in lishmah: spinning and twisting for the sake of the tsitsit ("תַּעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ"), and the law of the non-Jew / the חש״ו. Then he fixes the number and length of the threads: 4 folded into 8, the length י״ב גּוּדָלִים (and 30/15 גודלים per thread), the שיעור הגודל, the שמש. Next he lays out the knots and חוליות: 5 knots, 4 spaces, 39 windings, the נוֹי (1/3 גדיל), the נוֹטֵף עַל הַקֶּרֶן. Finally, he develops the תַּעֲשֶׂה וְלֹא מִן הֶעָשׂוּי — cutting the thread-heads before tying, and the נקב / the הרחקה.

Spinning and twisting for the sake of the tsitsit

The principle (seifim ב-ד). The threads must be spun and twisted (טָווּי וְשָׁזוּר); and this לְשֵׁם צִיצִית דַּוְקָא — declared at the start of the spinning and the twisting ("תַּעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ" = לְשֵׁם חוֹבָתְךָ). Without lishmah → pasoul.

The non-Jew and the חש״ו (seif ד). The non-Jew acts אֲדַעֲתֵּיה דְּנַפְשֵׁיהּ (pasoul, save the Jew's סיוע); but a חרש-שוטה-קטן with an adult standing over → kasher (he has no contrary intent).

The number and length of the threads

The principle (seifim א, ה-ט). 4 threads, folded into 8 (2 גדילים × 2 = 4; a surplus thread = בַּל תּוֹסִיף). After folding, each thread = 12 גּוּדָלִין (30 before folding, 2+1+12 = 15). The שיעור הגודל = 7 barley grains wide.

The שַׁמָּשׁ (seif ח). A longer thread serves to wind the גָּדִיל (the windings); lacking it, one alternates threads. Lengthening beyond 12 is permitted and good (a reserve if it tears — seif ט).

The knots, the חוליות and the windings

The order (seifim כה-לב). גָּדִיל (braided) + צִיצִית (free threads, with an ענף protruding). Minhag: 5 double knots (ה׳ קְשָׁרִים), 4 spaces (אֲוִירִים), 39 windings (7-8-11-13 = ל״ט = "הוי״ה אֶחָד"). נוֹי: a third גדיל, two thirds ענף.

The whole procedure is לכתחילה; מדאורייתא a חוליא + a קשר suffice (and one blesses). At setting: the גדיל must נוֹגֵעַ וּמַכֶּה עַל הַקֶּרֶן, not hang toward the ground.

The תעשה ולא מן העשוי, the נקב and the הרחקה

The yesod (seifim כג, טו). Cut the thread-heads (פּוֹסֵק רָאשֵׁי הַחוּטִין) before tying: a folded uncut thread forms a גדיל made בפסול already at the first חוליא + קשר (already sufficient מדאורייתא) → "גְּדִלִים תַּעֲשֶׂה" and not מן העשוי. Likewise the נקב made too high then cut (seif טו).

The נקב and the הרחקה (seifim יד-כב). The נקב: not higher than 3 גּוּדָלִין ("עַל הַכָּנָף"), not lower than מְלֹא קֶשֶׁר אֲגוּדָל (≈ 2 גודלים) from the edge; the הרחקה is required only at setting (seif יח, with the אִמְרָא לכתחילה); the גָּדִיל (braid) does not bear the tsitsit but counts in the measures (seifim יט-כב).

A pointer to study. The inner dimension of the threads of the tsitsit (חוטי הציצית) — beyond the halachic principle laid out here (the lishmah, the number and length of the threads, the knots, the תעשה ולא מן העשוי) — touches the thought of Chabad (Tanya, Likkutei Torah, and the sichot on the tsitsit and on lishmah). This page presents it at the level of the attested principle, without citing a chapter or a precise formulation. For deeper study of this dimension, study with a Rav of Chabad and in the texts themselves.

The force of the Alter Rebbe's psak

A comparison of the Alter Rebbe's way with those of the Mehaber, the Rama (רמ״א) and the Mishna Berura (משנה ברורה) on the key points of siman י״א. The Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe (שולחן ערוך הרב) row is highlighted — it displays the Rav's own sensibility as it emerges from his text (§1, 35 seifim). The Rav develops across 35 seifim what the Mehaber arranges in 15.

Topic Mehaber Rama Mishna Berura Way of the Alter Rebbe
Hagaha on 11:1-2 — יש מחמירין even in the נפוץ; the lenient practice. MB 11:1-9 — the lishmah of the spinning and twisting; עכו״ם / סיוע; the נפוץ. Way of the Alter Rebbe — chidush: he fixes the act of lishmah (declared at the start of the spinning and the twisting), and distinguishes the non-Jew (אֲדַעֲתֵּיה דְּנַפְשֵׁיהּ, save סיוע) from the חש״ו (standing over suffices) — seifim ב-ד.
MB 11:20-63 — the 8 threads; י״ב גודלים; the שיעור הגודל; the שמש (long thread). Way of the Alter Rebbe — chidush: he decomposes the 15 גודלים of the folded thread (2+1+12 = 15, 30 before folding), fixes the שיעור הגודל (ז׳ שעורות), institutes the שמש and makes lengthening a precaution (seifim א, ה-ט).
Hagaha on 11:14 — on the order of knots and windings. MB 11:61-72 — the תעשה ולא מן העשוי; cutting before the חוליא + קשר; the נקב. Way of the Alter Rebbe — chidush: he makes תעשה ולא מן העשוי the yesod — a folded uncut thread is a גדיל made בפסול already at the first חוליא + קשר (מדאורייתא); cutting before preserves, cutting after (or the נקב, seif טו) does not redeem.
Hagaha on 11:14 — the minhag of the windings (7-8-11-13) and the חוליות. MB 11:66-70 — the ה׳ קשרים; the ל״ט windings (הוי״ה אחד); בדיעבד one חוליא. Way of the Alter Rebbe — chidush: he details the procedure (double knot 4+4, windings around 7), gives the numbered minhag (7/8/11/13 = ל״ט = הוי״ה אחד), the נוֹי (1/3 גדיל), and rules that all is לכתחילה — מדאורייתא a חוליא + קשר, with a ברכה (seifim כה-לב).
Hagaha on 11:10-11 — on the הרחקה and the גדיל / אוריליי״ו. MB 11:42-60 — the 3 גודלים; מלא קשר אגודל; the אימרא; the גדיל. Way of the Alter Rebbe — chidush: he fixes both bounds (≤ 3 גודלים "על הכנף"; ≥ מלא קשר אגודל from the edge), rules the הרחקה is required only at setting (the אִמְרָא לכתחילה), and that the גָּדִיל (braid) does not bear the tsitsit but counts in the measures (seifim יד, טז-כב).
Hagaha on 11:6 — on the חוטים שאולין (kasher like one's own). Way of the Alter Rebbe — chidush: he ties the refuse to "מין כנף" (sim. ט), applies to the גזול the acquisitions-of-theft (יאוש + שינוי; reversible vs. irreversible; kasher without a ברכה), and grounds the נעבד in the change of appearance (wool vs. flax) — seifim י-יג.

The guiding lines of the Rav's way on this siman

Four orientations that characterize the Alter Rebbe's sensibility on the threads of the tsitsit — beyond the mere application of the rules. Each follows the structure: the siman's principle → the Rav's reading → practical consequence. Each line rests on the Rav's real text (§1).

Spinning and twisting lishmah as a foundation

The siman's principle: the threads must be spun (and twisted) for the sake of the tsitsit; the non-Jew who spins, even under watch, is pasoul (seifim א-ב of the Mehaber).

The Rav's reading: he fixes the act of lishmah (declared at the start of the spinning and the twisting, "תַּעֲשֶׂה לָּךְ"), and distinguishes the non-Jew (אֲדַעֲתֵּיה דְּנַפְשֵׁיהּ) from the חש״ו (standing over suffices).

Practical consequence: buy certified טווי ושזור לשמן tsitsit; understand that "lishmah" = declared at the time of the spinning and twisting (seifim ב-ד).

The number and length of the threads

The siman's principle: ד׳ threads folded into ח׳; length no less than י״ב גּוּדָלִים; a long thread (שמש); a surplus thread = בַּל תּוֹסִיף (seifim ד, יב of the Mehaber).

The Rav's reading: he decomposes the 15 גודלים of the folded thread (2 + 1 + 12), fixes the שיעור הגודל (7 barley grains), institutes the שמש and makes lengthening a precaution (a reserve if it tears).

Practical consequence: check the length (י״ב גודלים hanging); keep a reserve; do not add a thread (בל תוסיף) — seifim א, ה-ט.

The siman's principle: take care to cut the thread-heads before tying/winding; the נקב made too high then cut stays pasoul (seifim יג, י of the Mehaber).

The Rav's reading: a folded uncut thread forms a גדיל made בפסול already at the first חוליא + קשר (מדאורייתא) → "גְּדִלִים תַּעֲשֶׂה" and not מן העשוי; cutting before preserves, cutting after does not redeem.

Practical consequence: cut the thread-heads before threading into the נקב and tying; in case of a repair — consult a Rav (seifim טו, כג).

The knots, the נקב and the הרחקה

The siman's principle: ה׳ double knots and ד׳ spaces; the נקב not higher than ג׳ fingers, not lower than מלא קשר גודל; נוֹטֵף עַל הַקֶּרֶן (seifim 9-11, 14-15 of the Mehaber).

The Rav's reading: he details the procedure (5 double knots, 39 windings = הוי״ה אחד, נוֹי 1/3 גדיל), fixes both bounds of the נקב, and rules the הרחקה is required only at setting (the אִמְרָא לכתחילה).

Practical consequence: tie per the minhag; set the tsitsit נוֹטֵף עַל הַקֶּרֶן; reinforce the נקב with an אִמְרָא (seifim יד-כב, כה-לד).

The practical Chabad conduct

Six points of conduct that follow directly from siman י״א in the sensibility of the Alter Rebbe and of Chabad — presented at the level of principle, referring to the Rav for the detail of particular cases and minhaguim.

For the Chabad Hassid — Siman

Buy certified spun and twisted for the sake of the tsitsit (לְשֵׁם צִיצִית) tsitsit; "lishmah" = declared at the start of the spinning and the twisting. A non-Jew's threads → pasoul (save סיוע). Basis: SA HaRav seifim ב-ד.
  • ② Four threads, eight strands, י״ב גּוּדָלִים. 4 threads folded into 8; each at least 12 גּוּדָלִים hanging; a surplus thread = בַּל תּוֹסִיף. Good to lengthen (a reserve if it tears); a long thread (שמש) for the windings. Basis: SA HaRav seifim א, ה-ט.
  • ③ The 5 knots and the 39 windings. Minhag: ה׳ double knots and ד׳ spaces; 39 windings (7-8-11-13 = ל״ט = "הוי״ה אֶחָד"); the נוֹי = 1/3 גדיל, 2/3 ענף. מדאורייתא a חוליא + a קשר suffice. Basis: SA HaRav seifim כה-לב.
  • ④ תַּעֲשֶׂה וְלֹא מִן הֶעָשׂוּי — cut the heads first. Cut the thread-heads (פּוֹסֵק רָאשֵׁי הַחוּטִין) before tying — else a folded thread forms a גדיל made בפסול already at the first חוליא + קשר. When re-making the threads, heed the תעשה ולא מן העשוי — consult a Rav. Basis: SA HaRav seifim טו, כג.
  • ⑤ The נקב and the הרחקה. The נקב: not higher than 3 גּוּדָלִים ("עַל הַכָּנָף"), not lower than מְלֹא קֶשֶׁר אֲגוּדָל from the edge; the הרחקה is required only at setting; reinforce the נקב with an אִמְרָא. Torn threads / repair → consult a Rav.
Set the tsitsit so the גָּדִיל touches and strikes the corner (נוֹגֵעַ וּמַכֶּה עַל הַקֶּרֶן), not hanging toward the ground; orient the threads per the עֲטִיפָה. For a concrete case — consult a Rav. Basis: SA HaRav seif לד.

⚠ This section presents the Chabad conduct founded on the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, siman י״א (the real text reproduced in §1). It does not replace a rabbinic decision for a particular case. For any concrete question — and especially for cases of doubt (the length of the threads, repairing the נקב, תעשה ולא מן העשוי, ברכה): consult your Rav, and for Chabad, a Rav of Chabad.
