Siman 170 — the Jew who stands surety, and the interest that passes through him
Two seifim — the Shulchan Arukh announces it itself: Nowhere is there a sum added to the principal: interest here takes the form of a signature. Because a foreign law claims the surety before the borrower, whoever signs becomes the first debtor — and then a Jew’s creditor, for an amount that contains interest. The siman says on what condition one may sign, and what applies when one has signed anyway (Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 170 — 2 seifim)
A Jew who borrowed money at interest from a non-Jew: it is forbidden for another Jew to be his surety. The Mehaber writes the reason immediately after, which he rarely does: by their law the surety is claimed first — and the surety ends up claiming interest from a Jew.
Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De'ah 170:1

The Hebrew text of both seifim with English translation, and the mechanism explained: how a signature becomes interest. The vocabulary of suretyship — ערב, ערב קבלן, ערב שלוף דוץ, צד אחד ברבית —, the baraita of Bava Metzia and its sugya, the Rambam of הלכות מלווה ולווה, the Tur, the Beit Yosef, then the Shach (10 ס״ק), the Taz (8), the Baer Hetev (10), the Pit’hei Teshuva (3) and the Nekudot HaKesef (5) in full.
In-depth pilpul: Rashi against the Rashba on the scope of the prohibition; צד אחד ברבית and the question of its rank; the Rama against the Beit Yosef and the Taz on what has already been paid; the Taz’s great צ״ע on guaranteeing the principal alone and the Nekudot HaKesef’s answer; the Levush, the Shach and the Noda BiYehuda on guaranteeing the interest; the non-Jew’s pledge; and the ערב שלא בשעת מתן מעות.
A master table of both seifim clause by clause, the grid of the three figures of surety, the reflex questions, the two regimes of recovery, the vocabulary of the siman, the golden rules and the classic pitfalls.
The practical halakha according to the ש״ך, the ט״ז, the באר היטב, the פתחי תשובה and the נקודות הכסף, then contemporary cases of suretyship. Note: the Admur HaZaken did not write a Shulchan Arukh on Yoreh De'ah — a level of psak, not “Daat HaRav”. The Rambam of reference here is
A friend borrows from the bank: may I be his guarantor?
The question is not the loan’s interest but the order of claims. The Shulchan Arukh forbids, and immediately gives the reason:
And he points to the way out: that the lender undertake to claim the borrower first.

The Rama says that “nowadays” it is permitted. Is that a blanket permission?
No, and he says so in the same sentence: the presumption holds only where the custom is to claim the borrower first.
The Beit Yosef, cited by the Shach, teaches lekhatchila like Rashi: it is not enough that the borrower be reachable.

I paid on his behalf: may he reimburse me the interest I paid?
The Rama rules that the borrower owes every loss caused, but not the interest as such.
And if the interest has nonetheless been reimbursed, the Rama does not recover it — the Taz does.

What is the difference between an ערב, an ערב קבלן and an ערב שלוף דוץ?
The first is claimed only after the borrower; the second may be claimed at once, and the Shach writes that his status is that of the borrower; the third is the one the Mehaber’s second view targets — the lender has no claim at all against the borrower.

Is seif 2 simply the mirror of seif 1?
No: it is stricter. In seif 1 the interest ends up with a non-Jew; in seif 2 with a Jew. The Shach says so expressly.

The Rama permits guaranteeing the principal alone. The Taz objects: what should be retained?
The Taz leaves it in צ״ע. The Nekudot HaKesef answer that the prohibition never bore on the undertaking itself but on its performance — so that the Rama’s “permitted” means it is permitted to honour the guarantee by paying only the principal.
