Siman 182 — A man shall not wear a woman’s garment

Six seifim. The verse speaks only of a garment, and the sages read it as aiming at every grooming of the other sex done for beauty: that is why four seifim treat of bodily hair, one of dress, and the last of the white hair, the dyeing and the mirror. The siman holds two degrees — what makes the difference invisible belongs to the verse, what is an adornment without being seen is forbidden only rabbinically. (Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De’ah 182 — 6 seifim)

One who removes the hair of the underarm and the pubis, even with scissors in the manner of a razor — they would strike him with lashes of rebellion. The siman opens with the penalty, and the penalty already tells the degree: it is a prohibition of the sages.

Frequently asked questions — Siman 182

Does the siman really speak of garments?

Only one of its six seifim does; the Shach explains why:

The sages read the verse as aiming not at dress alone but at every woman’s grooming done for comeliness and beauty. Hence bodily hair, the white hair plucked, the dyeing and the mirror. For the application to your situation, ask your Rav.

May a man remove hair from his body?

The seif sets the prohibition and at once gives its measure, and the gloss the conclusion:

The prohibition is rabbinic and holds only where women alone remove this hair; where men do it too, the gloss permits even at the outset, and notes that only the ḥaverim refrain everywhere. The other limbs are permitted with scissors everywhere — but the Shach notes at ס״ק ג that the permission does not extend to the razor. For the application to your situation, ask your Rav.

And if the removal is for treatment?

Two seifim answer, each in its way:

One who shaves his whole body is permitted according to the opinion reported, and the Shach gives the reason: such a shaving disfigures and so cannot be an adornment — treatment is certainly intended. One who has sores and suffers from the hair is expressly permitted. For the application to your situation, ask your Rav.

Why is the garment graver than the hair?

The Taz gives the criterion, and it is the siman’s yesod:

What makes the difference between a man and a woman visible belongs to the verse itself, and one is flogged; underarm hair is not seen in public, and so is forbidden only rabbinically. That is why a single garment suffices to forbid, even when the rest of the dress clearly marks who wears it. For the application to your situation, ask your Rav.

May a man dye his hair or look in a mirror?

Seif 6 joins three acts, and the Taz gives the reverse:

Plucking a white hair from among the black and dyeing white to black are forbidden, even a single hair; the mirror is forbidden to a man, and the seif refers to siman 156. But the reverse of the dyeing — from black to white — is permitted even at the outset, for that is no woman’s comeliness. For the application to your situation, ask your Rav.
